Overview

Tucked within the natural beauty of Awara Onsen in Fukui Prefecture, Hakuwaso invites you to experience traditional Japanese hospitality in a space shaped by elegance, warmth, and the charm of the changing seasons. The ryokan is known for its deep connection to nature, heartfelt service, and hot springs drawn from the historic Awara source.

Whether you’re stepping into the beautifully landscaped garden, enjoying the natural hot spring in your room, or savoring local cuisine crafted with care, Hakuwaso offers you time to relax and rediscover what it means to slow down.

Accommodation

Hakuwaso features several room types designed for a comfortable and memorable stay, including detached suites with private open-air baths and rooms with spacious layouts and mountain views.

Detached Villa “Fugetsuan”

This private standalone villa sits inside the garden and offers a serene retreat with a personal open-air bath. The space includes a large 15-tatami mat room and a separate bedroom with beds. Enjoy your meals in a private room inside the main building while you unwind in a calm, new Japanese-style setting.

Semi-Suite “Suigetsu-no-Ma”

Located in the main building, this room also features a private open-air bath. A 15-tatami main room and an adjoining space give you the feeling of a small suite. Soak in the mineral-rich waters and rest in a calm, well-appointed space that reflects the quiet charm of Fukui.

Room “Ruri-no-Ma”

This large two-room layout features a 10-tatami Japanese room and an 8-tatami bedroom with two Simmons beds. The space accommodates up to eight people, making it ideal for families or small groups looking for comfort and space.

All rooms come equipped with amenities including a private bath (in select rooms), refrigerator, television, washlet toilet, yukata, towels, and a quiet atmosphere that complements the surrounding nature.

Dining

At Hakuwaso, the head chef personally selects ingredients from the central market in the early morning to prepare seasonal dishes that reflect the best of the Japan Sea and local mountains. Meals are served kaiseki-style, offering beautifully plated courses that highlight freshness and flavor.

The rice comes from local farmers in Awara, including specialty varieties like “Koshihikari” and “Hana Echizen,” known for their richness and aroma. Meals may include local favorites such as nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch), abalone, or Wagyu steak, prepared with care and balance.

Even breakfast reflects the same attention to detail, with examples including grilled fish, miso soup, simmered vegetables, and traditional Japanese side dishes. Seasonal items like sashimi and hot tofu appear regularly, offering you a nutritious and satisfying start to the day.

Onsen and Wellness

Hakuwaso’s baths draw from Awara Onsen’s 67th spring source—a low-alkaline, soft, and transparent water that leaves your skin refreshed and smooth. The large public bath and open-air bath are separated by gender and allow you to soak in mineral-rich water surrounded by nature.

If you prefer privacy, three reserved baths are also available: two indoor ceramic baths (Matsukaze-no-Yu) and one outdoor-style bath (Tsukimi-no-Yu). These spaces offer a more personal way to enjoy the ryokan’s hot springs and are suitable for anyone seeking peace, relaxation, or accessibility.

Guests with Tattoos

Hakuwaso allows access to private baths regardless of tattoos. Simply reserve one of the chartered baths on the same day of your visit. Please note that reservations cannot be made in advance by phone.
