Heda Onsen lies on the western coast of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture, looking out over Suruga Bay. The setting is a large part of its appeal: a quiet harbor, wooded hills, and, on clear days, wide views across the water toward Mount Fuji. Compared with some of Japan’s better-known hot spring towns, Heda feels calmer and more tied to the rhythms of a working seaside community.
The area is best approached as both an onsen stop and a coastal village, with a long-standing connection to fishing and the sea. That gives a stay here a distinctive character, especially if you enjoy places where scenery and local life still feel closely linked. Heda also makes a rewarding base for exploring the western side of Izu, where mountain roads, small ports, and changing views of the bay shape the journey as much as the destination.
