Katase-Shirata Onsen is a small hot spring area in Higashiizu, on the eastern coast of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture. Compared with Izu’s better-known resort towns, it feels quieter and more residential, with inns and baths spread through a coastal neighborhood not far from the sea and the Izu Kyuko railway line.
It suits travelers who prefer a slower base for exploring the peninsula rather than a busy hot spring center. From here, it is easy to continue along the coast to other parts of Higashiizu and the wider Izu area, while still returning to a setting shaped by local daily life, ocean air, and the familiar rhythm of a small onsen town.
