Overview

Atagawakan brings you close to the sea in Izu-Atagawa Onsen, a retro hot spring town on the eastern coast of the Izu Peninsula. You stay right by the ocean, with the Pacific stretching out in front of the inn and Izu Oshima rising across the water on clear days. From your room, the bath, and the open-air spaces, the sound of waves stays with you throughout the day.

This is a classic seaside ryokan where the view, the hot spring, and the food shape the stay. Every room faces the ocean, meals focus on Japanese cuisine with Izu seafood, and the inn uses its own hot spring source, Yawata no Yu. You can slow down with an ocean-view bath, enjoy dinner in your room, and wake early for the sunrise over the water.

Accommodation

Atagawakan has 39 rooms, and every room faces the ocean. You can look toward Izu Oshima, watch the morning light move across the sea, and enjoy the changing color of the water from your own space. Most rooms are Japanese-style, with tatami flooring, low seating, and futon bedding, while one special Japanese-Western room gives you a wider layout with beds.

The Standard Japanese Room is a 10-tatami room on the 4th to 6th floors, with a sitting area and bath and toilet. Large windows bring the ocean view into the room, so even the standard stay feels strongly connected to the coast.

The Top-Floor Japanese Room is on the 7th floor and gives you one of the best views in the inn. This 10-tatami room has a sitting area, bath, and toilet, and some plans include free use of the private baths. It works well when the ocean view is the main reason for your stay.

The High-Floor Twin Japanese Room is on the 5th floor and gives you a 10-tatami Japanese room with twin beds and table seating. This room is a good choice when you want the atmosphere of a Japanese room but prefer beds and chairs instead of sleeping on futons or sitting low on the floor.

Special Room Asahi is the inn’s only Japanese-Western special room. This 95-square-meter top-floor corner room has a 10-tatami Japanese room, living room, twin bedroom, and private open-air hot spring bath. The wide corner view lets you look across the horizon, and the room gives you more privacy, more space, and a stronger sense of occasion.

Rooms include free Wi-Fi, refrigerator, washlet toilet, TV, phone, hair dryer, safe, kettle, tea set, air conditioning, body soap, shampoo, conditioner, towels, bath towels, toothbrush set, yukata, and slippers. Some rooms also include an air purifier.

Dining

Dining at Atagawakan focuses on Japanese cuisine served in your room, so you can enjoy dinner without leaving your private space. The meal changes with the season and brings out the flavor of Izu through seafood, careful preparation, and a relaxed ryokan dining style.

Dinner may include local favorites such as kinmedai, abalone, and Ise-ebi depending on your plan. Course examples include sashimi with Izu kinmedai, tuna, squid, or shrimp, abalone cooked on a ceramic plate, simmered kinmedai, seasonal appetizers, fried dishes, rice, miso soup, pickles, and dessert. Lighter meal plans are also available when you want quality ingredients in a smaller portion.

Dinner usually starts at either 18:00 or 18:30. If you prefer not to sit on the floor, a private table-style dining space may be arranged for an additional fee for small groups, subject to availability and advance request.

Onsen and Wellness

Atagawakan uses its own hot spring source, Yawata no Yu. The source temperature is 98.5°C, with a flow rate of 150 liters per minute. The spring quality is sodium chloride and sulfate hot spring water, and the water is associated with relief for fatigue, bruises, nerve pain, stiff shoulders, sensitivity to cold, and tiredness.

The main bathing area, Shikaiha, includes an ocean-view large public bath and an open-air bath. On clear days, you can look toward the Izu Islands while you soak. The indoor bath uses both free-flowing and circulated hot spring water, while the open-air bath and private baths use free-flowing hot spring water.

The open-air bath sits close to the sea, so you can feel the wind, hear the waves, and enjoy the open sky while bathing. The open-air bath has no roof, which makes the morning sunrise, moonlight, and night sky part of the experience.

Atagawakan also has four private baths called Tsubaki. Each bath has its own design: Tane uses a deep, quiet black-toned space with a ceramic tub; Me uses stone and a fresh natural feeling; Tsubomi has a round hinoki tub with bright details; and Hana uses hinoki in a warmer, more floral space. The private baths are available by reservation from 15:00 to 22:00 and from 7:00 to 9:00, with one-hour sessions. The large public bath is open from 15:00 to 9:30 the next morning.

Guests with Tattoos

Atagawakan has shared public hot spring baths, so you cannot use the shared baths with tattoos. If you have tattoos, choose Special Room Asahi with its private open-air hot spring bath or reserve one of the four private Tsubaki baths instead.

Facilities

Atagawakan keeps the focus on the sea, the hot spring, and a traditional ryokan stay. You can spend time in the lobby lounge Hana Akari, stop by the coffee corner Kai En, browse the shop Shofuku for Izu-Atagawa local items, or enjoy a quiet moment in the tea room Bogian. During the warmer season, the outdoor pool adds a casual seaside-resort touch, while table tennis gives you an easy activity after dinner or between baths.

The inn also has a game corner, meeting room with Wi-Fi, free parking, and public spaces that reflect seasonal Japanese details. The atmosphere stays simple and nostalgic rather than busy, which suits the retro feeling of Atagawa Onsen.

Activities

Atagawakan places you close to both the beach and Atagawa’s hot spring town. You can walk by the sea, enjoy the morning sunrise, or explore the streets around Izu-Atagawa Station, where steam rises from the town’s hot spring sources.

Atagawa Banana Crocodile Garden is about 10 minutes away on foot and is one of the area’s best-known attractions, with crocodiles, tropical plants, and rare animals. Izu Animal Kingdom is about 15 minutes away by car, while Jogasaki Coast and Mount Omuro are also easy to visit during a wider Izu sightseeing day.

Seasonal travel works especially well here. In spring, you can visit the Kawazu cherry blossom area, while summer brings beach time nearby. Autumn offers silver grass scenery, and winter is a good time for hot spring bathing, sunrise views, and local fruit picking around Izu.

Additional Features

Check-in starts at 15:00, and check-out is by 10:00. The inn is about seven minutes on foot from Izu-Atagawa Station. A shuttle from the station is available from 14:00 to 18:00 when you contact the inn in advance or call after arriving at the station.

Free parking is available for 30 cars. Atagawakan also offers family, couple, and anniversary plans, with some plans including child-friendly touches or celebration options. If you want a cake, private bath time, a lighter meal plan, or a premium seafood plan, choose the stay plan that best matches the way you want to enjoy Izu.
