Overview

Stay at Gero Springs Lodge in a quiet residential area around five minutes by car from JR Gero Station and the centre of Gero Onsen. Each standalone villa is reserved for one travelling party, giving you the freedom to spend time together without shared corridors, neighbouring rooms, or communal facilities.

You can prepare meals in your own kitchen, arrange a BBQ, connect to the free Wi-Fi, and soak in a private source-flowing open-air hot spring bath whenever you choose. The space works particularly well when you travel with children, friends, or a larger family and prefer the flexibility of a private house.

Shops remain within easy reach. A convenience store and a drugstore selling fresh food are around five minutes away by car, while a supermarket can be reached in approximately ten minutes.

Accommodation

Choose from five private villas: Brissy, Phyme, Orka, Mysa, and Jiro’s. Each building has its own kitchen and living or dining area, along with Japanese futon bedding, Western beds, or a combination of the two.

Brissy accommodates up to six people. The layout includes a kitchen and living room, along with two Japanese rooms. Three futons can be prepared in each tatami room, giving you separate sleeping areas while keeping everyone inside the same house.

Phyme accommodates up to eight people. The kitchen and living room sit below a loft sleeping area where five futons can be prepared. A separate Japanese room has space for three more futons. This villa also includes its own open-air hot spring bath.

Orka accommodates up to eight people and provides three separate bedrooms. The Western bedroom has two beds, while two six-tatami Japanese rooms each have space for three futons. A kitchen and living room give you a central place to cook, eat, and relax together.

Mysa is the most compact choice and accommodates up to five people. The kitchen and living area includes one bunk bed, while the separate Japanese room has space for three futons. This layout suits you when you travel as a couple, a small family, or a close group of friends.

Jiro’s accommodates up to eight people. The kitchen and dining area includes a bunk bed, while a separate Western bedroom has two beds. Four futons can be prepared in the Japanese room.

The open-air bath at Jiro’s is the largest bathing option at the property, with enough space for around three adults to soak together. This makes it a practical choice when you want to enjoy the hot spring as a family or group.

Each villa is non-smoking and includes free Wi-Fi. The private layout also makes the property suitable for longer stays or remote work, as you can follow your own schedule without the service times of a conventional hotel.

Dining

Gero Springs Lodge does not provide breakfast or dinner. Every villa has a kitchen where you can prepare meals whenever you choose or serve food collected from restaurants in Gero.

Kitchen equipment includes a refrigerator, microwave, cooking stove, and basic cookware. You also have the dishes and utensils needed for self-catering. Seasonings and condiments are not provided, so you need to bring or purchase anything required for cooking.

A convenience store and a drugstore with fresh food can be reached in around five minutes by car. A larger supermarket is approximately ten minutes away, making it easy to buy vegetables, meat, drinks, breakfast items, and other supplies.

You can also arrange a BBQ grill before your stay. Personal grills and other BBQ equipment cannot be brought onto the property. A covered cooking area allows you to continue with the BBQ during rain, although weather and safety conditions may still affect its use.

The centre of Gero Onsen has restaurants serving Hida beef, hōba miso, noodles, grilled river fish, and casual Japanese food. You can dine in town and return to your villa for another hot spring bath later in the evening.

Onsen and Wellness

Each villa includes its own source-flowing open-air bath filled with natural hot spring water. The spring is classified as an alkaline simple spring and has the smooth bathing texture associated with the Gero area.

You can use the bath repeatedly throughout your stay without making a reservation or sharing it with anyone outside your travelling party. A morning soak, an afternoon bath after sightseeing, and another visit beneath the night sky can all become part of your stay.

The bathing facilities are open-air only. There is no indoor bath or communal hot spring area, so the experience remains completely private.

The private setting also works well when you travel with children or prefer to bathe with your partner or family. You can enter at your own pace without following the customs or opening hours of a public bath.

Jiro’s has the largest bath, with enough space for approximately three adults. Bath sizes and designs differ between villas, so you should select your accommodation according to the number of people who plan to soak together.

Guests with Tattoos

You can use your villa’s natural hot spring bath when you have tattoos. The bath is reserved exclusively for your travelling party, and there are no communal bathing areas to enter.

You can soak at any time during your stay without covering your tattoos or requesting a separate bathing session.

Facilities

Each villa gives you a private kitchen, living or dining area, sleeping rooms, toilet, and source-flowing open-air hot spring bath. You can spend the full stay inside your accommodation without entering shared spaces or following a fixed daily schedule.

Free Wi-Fi supports sightseeing plans, entertainment, and remote work. Kitchen equipment includes a refrigerator, microwave, stove, and cookware, while plates, glasses, cutlery, and other dining items support self-catering.

Bathing items include hand towels, bath towels, shampoo, conditioner, body soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and a hair dryer. You can move easily between the bath and your sleeping area without carrying items through a public building.

A BBQ grill can be arranged in advance. The covered BBQ space allows outdoor cooking during light rain, while bringing your own grill is not permitted.

Free parking is provided for up to two vehicles beside each villa. This makes it easier to bring groceries, luggage, and supplies for a longer stay.

Activities

Spend the day exploring Gero Onsen, then return to the lodge for cooking, a BBQ, or another bath. The hot spring town has footbaths, cafés, local shops, riverside paths, and restaurants within a short drive.

Gero Onsen Gassho Village recreates a traditional mountain settlement with ten thatched-roof houses relocated from Shirakawa-go and other areas. You can enter the historic buildings, learn about life in the Hida region, and explore seasonal gardens and walking paths.

The village also offers activities such as pottery painting and traditional washi paper crafts. A footbath, local food, and a long forest slide add more ways to spend time there.

You can walk through the centre of Gero Onsen, stop at public footbaths, browse local sweets and crafts, or follow the Hida River through the town. Seasonal events and illuminations bring a different atmosphere throughout the year.

For a longer outing, you can use Gero as a base for visiting Hida Takayama, Gujo Hachiman, Magome, Tsumago, or Shirakawa-go. Returning to a private villa gives you space to prepare a simple meal and soak after a full day on the road.

Additional Features

Check-in takes place at the nearby Gero Springs Hotel rather than inside your villa. You can complete the procedure between 4:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. before collecting the information needed to enter your accommodation.

Check-out is by 10:00 a.m. The villas are around five minutes by car or taxi from JR Gero Station and the centre of the hot spring district.

Free parking is available for two vehicles at each villa. A station shuttle is not provided, so arriving by car or taxi is the easiest option when you have luggage or food supplies.

Pets cannot stay at Gero Springs Lodge. All indoor areas are non-smoking, although a small outdoor ashtray is provided. Cigarette ends must remain outside the accommodation.

You need to keep noise low after 9:00 p.m. to protect the surrounding residential environment. Fireworks are not permitted anywhere on the grounds.
