Overview

Hayamakan sits on a quiet hillside just outside the city center, offering sweeping views of the Zao mountain range. This tranquil hot spring ryokan blends the nostalgia of rural Japan with modern touches, creating a space where you can unwind and reconnect with nature.

Whether you’re traveling to explore the beauty of Yamagata or simply taking a break, Hayamakan provides a restful retreat filled with warmth, thoughtful design, and a deep appreciation for local culture.

Accommodation

Hayamakan offers three distinct room types, each designed to give you a private, relaxing experience. All rooms feature 100% natural hot spring water, flowing directly into the bath.

Suiyotei: Enjoy a private view bath and terrace footbath. Tatami flooring and twin Simmons beds give you both tradition and comfort. This room includes a private dining space where you can enjoy your meals in peace.

Kayotei: This room opens onto a small garden and features a hinoki (Japanese cypress) bath filled with hot spring water. It also includes a sunken kotatsu seating area, perfect for cozy group stays.

Shikitei: A simple Japanese-style room with a garden view and a hinoki bath. Natural light from the garden brightens the room and invites you to rest on the soft tatami floor.

Each room comes with Wi-Fi, yukata, and basic amenities. Whether you prefer to stretch out on the tatami or relax on the sofa, you’ll find space to slow down and feel at home.

Dining

Hayamakan’s cuisine focuses on the rich flavors of Yamagata. You’ll enjoy a seasonal multi-course meal that blends tradition with new ideas—a fresh take on Japanese dining known as “New Japanese Cuisine.”

Meals are served in private dining rooms:

Suiyotei: Dine at the exclusive Fukujyuan, where soft lighting and warm decor frame a relaxing atmosphere. Dinner follows a prix-fixe format with locally sourced ingredients prepared in elegant style.

Kayotei and Shikitei: Meals are served in private rooms, where you can enjoy a quiet atmosphere and traditional flavors.

Breakfast is hearty and energizing, helping you start your day with locally sourced foods, fresh flavors, and cheerful hospitality. A children’s menu is also available, with family-friendly dishes and flexible options for dietary needs.

The drink selection includes local wines, sake, and a wide range of beverages chosen to complement your meal. If you have allergies or specific dietary concerns, just inform the staff in advance—they’ll do their best to accommodate your needs.

Onsen and Wellness

All of Hayamakan’s baths draw from a private natural source. The water is soft, clear, and gentle—safe even for babies—and rich in healing properties.

Public Baths:

The large indoor bath is made of stone, while the open-air bath uses walls of local moss stone (sunagoke) and offers an open-sky view.

You can use the baths any time of day or night.

Room Baths:

Each room includes a private bath made from hinoki wood and filled with 100% natural hot spring water.

Suiyotei also offers a large view bath with space for two and a relaxing terrace footbath.

Water Quality & Benefits:

The spring contains sodium, calcium, chloride, and sulfate.

It helps with fatigue, cold sensitivity, stiff shoulders, skin conditions, burns, digestive issues, and more.

Guests with Tattoos

Guests with tattoos are welcome to use the in-room baths. For public bath access, it’s best to check with the front desk about current policies.
