Overview

Hotel Izukyu sits right in front of Shirahama Beach on the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula, one of Japan’s warmest and most scenic coastal regions. The Pacific Ocean is not a backdrop here — it is the whole point. You can see it from your room, hear it from the baths, and walk to it in minutes. This is a hot spring resort where beach life and onsen culture genuinely come together, making it one of the most straightforward and satisfying stays on the Izu coast.

Getting here from Tokyo takes roughly two hours and forty minutes by train, with the nearest station being Izukyu-Shimoda.

Accommodation

The hotel has 117 rooms, and every single one faces the ocean. Whether you choose a Japanese-style room with tatami floors and futon bedding, or a Western-style room with a carpeted floor and beds, the view stays the same: wide, open, and sea-facing. The rooms are spacious by Japanese hotel standards, giving you genuine room to settle in and unwind.

Japanese-style rooms come with the full traditional layout — tatami floors, futon bedding set out for you in the evening, and a pace that naturally slows you down. Western-style rooms offer beds and carpeted floors while keeping that same coastal outlook. All rooms include air conditioning, a TV, yukata robes, a private bathroom, and a hairdryer. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property.

Dining

The restaurant focuses on Japanese cuisine, with a strong emphasis on seafood pulled fresh from the waters around Shimoda. Dinner highlights include local specialties like abalone, kinmedai (golden eye snapper) prepared as sashimi, shabu-shabu or grilled, and seasonal catches that shift with the time of year. The restaurant requires a reservation, so it is worth booking your dinner slot when you arrive or before you travel. Please note that you need to check in by 18:00 to be served dinner that evening.

Breakfast offers Japanese and Western options, eaten with a full ocean view to set the tone for the day ahead.

Each morning, a small market at the hotel sells fresh local seaweed, dried fish, and regional products, an easy way to bring a taste of the Izu coast home with you.

Onsen and Wellness

Hotel Izukyu gives you two different hot spring sources. “Ryujin-no-Yu” rises from the hotel grounds and is a weak alkaline sulfate spring. “Rendaiji-no-Yu” comes from Shimoda Rendaiji Onsen and is a simple hot spring.

The open-air bath uses Ryujin-no-Yu. This spring is drawn from a water vein connected to the Izu Amagi mountain range, and the hotel lists benefits such as relief for neuralgia, muscle pain, joint pain, stiff shoulders, arteriosclerosis, cuts, burns, chronic skin conditions, sensitivity to cold, fatigue recovery, and health promotion. The open-air bath is open from 3:00 p.m. to midnight and again from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

The large indoor bath uses Rendaiji-no-Yu and includes a jet bath. The washing area has partitions so you can bathe with more comfort. The hotel lists benefits such as relief for neuralgia, muscle pain, joint pain, stiff shoulders, motor paralysis, joint stiffness, bruises, sprains, chronic digestive conditions, sensitivity to cold, fatigue recovery, and health promotion. The indoor bath follows the same hours as the open-air bath.

You can also reserve a private bath using Ryujin-no-Yu. The private bath is open from 4:00 p.m. to midnight, with final reception at 11:00 p.m. You need to ask the front desk in advance, and the hotel notes that the bath may not be available during maintenance or that hours may change in summer.

Guests with Tattoos

If you have tattoos, you are not permitted to use the large public baths. However, you can still enjoy the hot spring experience through the private bath available in your room. It is worth contacting the hotel before your visit to confirm the current policy and ensure your room comes with a private bath.
