Overview
Wake to the islands, pine trees, and changing light of Matsushima Bay at Komatsukan Kofutei. Matsushima is one of Japan’s Three Scenic Views, and the ryokan places this celebrated coastal landscape at the heart of your stay.
Large windows, panoramic bathing areas, and outdoor spaces open towards the sea. You can watch the sun rise over the bay, listen to the waves, and see small islands appear through the morning mist.
Your stay combines natural Matsushima hot spring water, seasonal food from Miyagi and Tohoku, and rooms shaped around the coastal scenery. Historic temples, sightseeing boats, Fukuura Bridge, and local shops are also within walking distance.
Accommodation
You can choose between rooms with private hot spring baths, Japanese-Western rooms with beds, and traditional Japanese rooms with tatami flooring. Each category offers a different view of Matsushima Bay, Fukuura Bridge, the islands, or the surrounding pine trees.
The private-bath rooms give you the closest connection with the sea. Sekkoku has a 12.5-tatami Japanese room, a wide veranda overlooking Fukuura Bridge, and a private hot spring bath with glass shutters. You can open the shutters in comfortable weather or close them when it is cold, rainy, or windy.
Uminiwa combines a 10-tatami living area with a separate twin bedroom fitted with Simmons beds. Its panoramic hot spring bath and wooden terrace look towards Fukuura Bridge, giving you space to bathe, sit outside, and watch the bay change throughout the day.
Matsukaze was renovated in April 2025. This spacious 18-tatami room has a sofa area, a private viewing bath supplied with hot spring water, a humidifier, and a Dyson hairdryer. You can enjoy Matsushima from both the living area and the bath.
Oimatsu follows a more traditional Japanese design. The 12-tatami room includes a small study with a moon-shaped window and a cypress hot spring bath overlooking the bay. Shiosai combines a 10-tatami living area, a separate theatre room, Simmons semi-double beds, and a private hot spring bath with panoramic sea views.
Japanese-Western accommodation includes Sendai Hagi, a corner suite with twin beds, two tatami rooms, a smaller adjoining room, Simmons beds, original furnishings, and wide windows overlooking Matsushima Bay.
Futarishizuka has a flexible bed layout, a sitting area, a minibar, and broad views through large windows. Umiiro is a corner twin room overlooking Fukuura Bridge and Fukuura Island, while Wa-Modern combines low beds with a table area facing the sea and pine trees. Umiiro and Wa-Modern have separate shower booths rather than bathtubs.
Traditional Japanese rooms range from compact designer rooms to larger suites. Wabisuke and Yamaboshi combine a 12.5-tatami main room with a six-tatami adjoining room, a wide veranda, and a massage chair.
The standard 10-tatami rooms have large windows, a traditional study area, and views of the sea and pine trees. Hanaikada adds a massage chair facing Matsushima Bay. Omomuki has an eight-tatami layout, adjustable lighting, a large window, and a separate shower booth.
Chidori and Sekirei have 14-tatami layouts with windows on two sides. These rooms include partial sea views because part of the surrounding land remains visible. Sekirei also includes a massage chair.
Room facilities differ by category, but you can expect a washbasin, toilet with a washlet, hairdryer, internet access, and either a bathroom or shower booth. Selected rooms also include bathrobes, air purifiers, massage chairs, large televisions, Simmons beds, and private hot spring baths.
Dining
Dinner brings together seasonal seafood, mountain produce, and ingredients selected from Matsushima, Miyagi, and other parts of Tohoku. You can choose between a Japanese full-course dinner, a charcoal-grilled course, or in-room dining, depending on your room and selected arrangement.
The Japanese full-course dinner focuses on fresh local ingredients and careful preparation. The kitchen team adds extra steps to the cooking and presentation to bring out the flavour of each ingredient. Seasonal dishes may include locally caught seafood, natural abalone, sashimi, and Sendai black wagyu beef.
The Bengara Kamado charcoal-grilled course gives you a more interactive dining experience. You select four ingredients from the day’s display, and the kitchen team grills them over charcoal before serving them at your table.
Selections change with the market and season. They may include grilled or simmered fish, surf clam, oysters, snow crab, prawns, Miyagi pork, bacon, conger eel tempura, beef tongue, and seasonal vegetables. The course also includes dishes such as sashimi, a small hot pot, and dessert.
In-room dining allows you to enjoy a Japanese kaiseki meal without leaving your accommodation. Carefully selected seasonal ingredients arrive on thoughtfully chosen tableware, giving you time to dine at your own pace. This dining style is available with selected private-bath rooms.
Breakfast is served at your table as a Japanese meal prepared one dish at a time. Drinks, salad, bread, and the speciality clam rice can be replenished. The warm dishes and coastal flavours provide a gentle start before a day of sightseeing.
Meals may be served in Restaurant Sazanami, Yamaki Dining, the Bengara Kamado restaurant, your room, or one of the reservable Tsukiakari private dining rooms, depending on your arrangement.
Onsen and Wellness
Komatsukan Kofutei uses natural Matsushima Onsen water formed within ancient underground layers. The spring is an alkaline simple hot spring with hypotonic, alkaline, high-temperature water. It feels smooth against the skin and is often described as a beauty bath.
The mineral water is traditionally associated with relief from tiredness, sensitivity to cold, muscle and joint discomfort, stiffness, bruises, sprains, and fatigue after travel.
Miharashi-no-Yu consists of two large panoramic bathing areas with different designs. The men’s and women’s sides change early in the morning, allowing you to experience both settings during an overnight stay.
From the baths, you can look across the sea, sky, pine trees, and small islands. The scenery changes from bright afternoon water to moonlight over the bay and sunrise the following morning.
Shio-no-Koroten is a smaller panoramic open-air bath connected to Miharashi-no-Yu. It faces Matsushima Bay and is available to women in the evening and men the following morning.
Asahimi-no-Yu is a reservable private open-air bath with a standing bath. The water reaches a depth of around 130 centimetres, allowing you to soak while standing and looking across the bay. The space also includes a shower booth and fresh towels.
Asahimi-no-Yu is limited to ten sessions each day. Most reservations are made after check-in, while selected accommodation arrangements may include priority access. The standing bath is deep, so close supervision is important when bathing with children.
The Otsukimidai foot bath provides another way to enjoy the hot spring water and sea views. Sit outside with your feet in the warm water while watching the tide, moon, sunrise, or evening lights. As it is outdoors, it may close during unsuitable weather.
Guests with Tattoos
You cannot use the shared panoramic baths or Shio-no-Koroten if you have tattoos. Reserve Asahimi-no-Yu for a private hot spring experience, or choose a room with its own private bath.
Facilities
Lounge Bar Shiokaze sits beside the Otsukimidai foot bath and provides a comfortable place to enjoy a drink after bathing. In the evening, you can relax with a cocktail while looking towards the water.
The shop carries local sake, tableware chosen by the proprietress, regional products, and original cookies prepared by the in-house pastry chef. It offers an easy way to find gifts connected with Matsushima and Miyagi.
Restaurant Sazanami, Yamaki Dining, the Bengara Kamado restaurant, and the Tsukiakari private dining rooms provide different settings for dinner and breakfast. The two Tsukiakari rooms use adjustable lighting to create a more personal atmosphere for meals with your partner, family, or friends.
A women-only refresh room includes custom dressing tables and Dyson hairdryers. Free Wi-Fi is available for planning your day or sharing photographs from Matsushima.
Wheelchair support includes a priority parking space, a ramp at the entrance, loan wheelchairs, handrails on internal stairs, bathing chairs in the shared baths, and handrails in both shared and private bathing areas. Elevators connect the main floors, although the building is not completely barrier-free.
Families travelling with babies can use the lobby play area and request selected items such as a stroller, children’s yukata, slippers, a bottle-warming pot, a nappy bin, children’s shampoo, bathing chairs, and highchairs. Baby food can be warmed, and children’s meals or celebration arrangements can be prepared with advance notice.
Activities
Begin with a walk across the red Fukuura Bridge to Fukuura Island, a protected natural garden with around 250 plant species. The bridge is only a short walk from the ryokan and provides wide views across the bay.
Zuiganji Temple is also within walking distance. Its main hall is a National Treasure, with richly decorated rooms, carved details, painted panels, and a long connection with the Date family.
Continue to Godaido Temple for views across the water, or join a Matsushima Bay sightseeing cruise to see the islands and unusual rock formations from the sea.
You can also explore the Michinoku Date Masamune Historical Museum, browse fresh seafood at Matsushima Fish Market, or follow the town’s three bridges connected with local stories of parting, meeting, and lasting relationships.
Back at the ryokan, spend time in the foot bath, watch the sunrise from the panoramic baths, enjoy a drink at Lounge Bar Shiokaze, or browse local sake and crafts in the shop.
