Overview
Mayu Futahari overlooks the sea and rocky islands of Dogashima on the western coast of the Izu Peninsula. With only six suites, you can enjoy a private stay shaped by ocean views, sunsets, regional food, and natural hot spring bathing.
The name reflects the idea of resting inside two protective cocoons. Each stay gives you two separate rooms in two buildings connected by a covered walkway. One space holds your bedroom, living area, terrace, and private open-air onsen. The other serves as your private dining room and an additional lounge. Together, the two spaces cover approximately 150 square metres.
Mayu Futahari opened in 2018, the same year the Izu Peninsula became a UNESCO Global Geopark. Reclaimed beams from old Japanese houses appear throughout the two buildings, connecting the design with the long history of the region. Outside, Dogashima’s islands, caves, cliffs, and changing sea create the main focus of your stay.
Accommodation
All six suites face the ocean and include a private wooden terrace with an open-air cypress bath. Large windows bring the Dogashima coastline into your living space, allowing you to watch the sea change from bright blue in the morning to deep orange around sunset.
Each suite takes its name and colour scheme from a precious stone or material. Ruri uses deep blue tones inspired by lapis lazuli and the night sea. Menou reflects the layered colours of agate. Hari takes inspiration from the clear brilliance of crystal. Zouge uses soft ivory tones, while Rangyoku draws on the colours of moonlight over the water. Konpeki surrounds you with rich shades of blue inspired by a cloudless sky.
Your sleeping and living suite includes a Simmons bed, silk-rich bedding, a spacious seating area, a 50-inch television with Blu-ray playback, Plasmacluster heating and air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, an espresso machine, and a water dispenser. French Bleu Nature furniture incorporates driftwood and other natural materials, with different pieces selected to complement the theme of each suite.
Your separate private room combines Japanese design with a dining table and a raised seating area beside the windows. You eat both dinner and breakfast here, then use the room as another place to read, talk, or enjoy the ocean view between meals.
Yukata, indoor clothing, bathrobes, and pyjamas allow you to change according to the time of day. Original skincare products, shampoo, conditioner, toiletries, a HairBeauron hairdryer, and a hair iron are also provided.
Dining
You enjoy dinner and breakfast inside your own private dining room, without using a shared restaurant. The windows look towards the sea and islands, so the light and coastal scenery become part of each meal.
Dinner follows a creative Japanese and Western kaiseki style. The kitchen uses seafood from Suruga Bay, morning-harvested vegetables from Izu, and produce grown on the property’s own farm. Mayu Futahari also works as an amimoto, operating within the fishing industry and using that connection to source fresh local seafood.
Your menu changes with the season and the day’s catch. It may include spiny lobster delivered from nearby Tago Port, tuna and regional sashimi with fresh Izu wasabi, abalone prepared according to its condition, Shizuoka wagyu, sea urchin, kinmedai, or seasonal crab. Spiny lobster may appear with local vegetables at dinner and return in miso soup the following morning. Ingredients can change during closed fishing seasons or when weather affects the catch.
Breakfast arrives as a three-tier box filled with colourful small dishes, local vegetables, and seasonal flavours. Fresh salad and other morning dishes complete the meal, giving you a slower start while you watch the early light over the water.
Onsen and Wellness
Every suite includes its own open-air cypress bath on the ocean-facing terrace. The tub has enough room for two people and gives you direct views of the sea, islands, sky, and evening sunset.
The bath uses natural Dogashima Onsen water classified as a calcium-sodium sulphate spring. The water flows directly from the source 24 hours a day without reheating, dilution, or circulation. Because the ryokan does not artificially control the spring, the temperature can change according to the weather and the condition of the source. You can add hot or cold water when you need to adjust it.
You can bathe whenever you like, from an early-morning soak to a late evening bath beneath the night sky. The completely private setting lets you enjoy the onsen without schedules or interruptions.
For another wellness experience, you can reserve one of the two Private Siesta rooms. Hisui uses blue and white tones and includes an outdoor jet bath, terrace, shower, dressing area, and treatment room. Kohaku uses amber colours and occupies a corner position with wide views, including the evening light over the coast.
Both Private Siesta rooms include an outdoor jet bath rather than a natural onsen bath. You can rest on the terrace, enjoy the sea view, and choose from available drinks during your session. Spa treatments can also be arranged in the private treatment space.
Guests with Tattoos
Every suite has a completely private open-air hot spring bath, so you can use the onsen if you have tattoos. You do not need to enter a shared public bathing area. The outdoor jet baths inside the Private Siesta rooms are also reserved for private use.
Facilities
Mayu Futahari provides six ocean-facing suites, six private dining and relaxation rooms, private open-air hot spring baths, two reservable Private Siesta rooms, spa treatment spaces, wooden terraces, free Wi-Fi, 50-inch televisions with Blu-ray playback, espresso machines, water dispensers, climate control, skincare products, several types of roomwear, bathrobes, pyjamas, and HairBeauron hair equipment.
A welcome drink and sweets are served in your private room after arrival. Parking is available when you travel by car. An electric vehicle charging point is also available, subject to availability, and requires the Terra Charge application. All six suites are non-smoking.
Activities
Dogashima lies around five minutes away on foot, giving you easy access to one of Nishi-Izu’s best-known coastal areas. You can join a sightseeing boat trip through the sea caves when weather and sea conditions allow, or walk around the viewpoints overlooking the islands.
At low tide, the Dogashima Tombolo may reveal a natural path across the sea to the offshore island. The timing and visibility depend on the tide, weather, and condition of the water, so checking the daily tide information before setting out is important.
You can also visit Futo Coast, Golden Cape Park, or the Izu Chohachi Art Museum. Golden Cape offers another impressive sunset location, while the museum introduces you to the decorative plasterwork associated with master craftsman Chohachi Irie.
You may prefer to remain inside the property. A long bath, a private meal, time in the second lounge, a spa treatment, and sunset drinks on the terrace can easily fill the day without a busy sightseeing plan.
Additional Features
Check-in begins at 3:00 p.m., and check-out is by 12:00 p.m., giving you time for another bath and an unhurried breakfast before departure.
You can reach Dogashima by bus from Mishima, Shuzenji, or Izukyu-Shimoda, while travelling by car gives you greater freedom to explore the western Izu coastline. The Suruga Bay Ferry also offers a scenic approach when your wider route includes the Shimizu side of Shizuoka.
Mayu Futahari suits you when you value privacy and want more than a standard room. You receive two connected spaces, private dining, an ocean-facing terrace, and your own source-fed open-air onsen, all set above one of the most striking coastlines in Izu.
