Overview
Stay at Nikko Tokanso and immerse yourself in the historic beauty of Japan’s ancient capital. Built on the grounds of a former villa owned by the Sendai feudal lord Date Masamune, this ryokan sits within the UNESCO World Heritage site of Shrines and Temples of Nikko. You’ll walk the same paths once crossed by samurai and monks while being surrounded by towering cedar trees, centuries-old temples, and natural beauty that changes with the seasons.
Whether you’re admiring the sunrise from an open-air bath or relaxing in a quiet tatami room, every moment at Tokanso connects you to the spirit of old Japan.
Accommodation
Choose from several types of traditional Japanese-style rooms, all thoughtfully arranged to create a peaceful retreat:
- Japanese-Style Rooms: Tatami mat rooms ranging in size, each equipped with a toilet. You can enjoy a view of Nikko’s seasonal nature, with spring blossoms, summer greenery, autumn leaves, and winter snow all visible from your window.
- Special Guest Rooms: These upgraded rooms include a private bath and toilet. They offer more space and additional comforts while maintaining the calm and simplicity of a traditional ryokan.
Tokanso is a completely smoke-free facility, creating a clean and comfortable environment for all.
Dining
Your meals at Tokanso reflect the flavors and culture of Nikko’s deep traditions. You can enjoy two different dinner options:
- Seasonal Kaiseki Dinner: This multi-course meal features yuba (tofu skin), local mountain vegetables, and ingredients sourced from the region. The dishes change with the seasons, showcasing what’s freshest and most flavorful.
- Vegetarian & Pork-Free Kaiseki Dinner: Made primarily with vegetables, this menu is available for those with dietary restrictions. Please inform the staff a few days in advance to ensure your meal is ready.
For breakfast, you’ll receive a traditional Japanese meal designed to gently wake your body. A vegetarian and pork-free version is also available upon request.
Onsen and Wellness
Enjoy the healing waters of Tokanso’s simple alkaline hot spring, also known as Bihada no Yu—”the hot spring for beautiful skin.” The baths are certified under Japan’s Hot Spring Law and provide a refreshing soak that is gentle enough for sensitive skin and children.
- Open-Air Baths: Watch the sunrise as you relax in the quiet outdoor bath, breathing in fresh mountain air while letting warm water ease your muscles.
- Large Communal Baths: Soak in spacious baths for both men and women. Clean water, soft lighting, and natural materials help you unwind after a day of exploring.
The hot spring water is colorless, odorless, and transparent. It’s believed to ease muscle pain, frozen shoulders, and nerve tension. The water is heated, filtered, and treated with care to maintain high hygiene standards.
Guests with Tattoos
Please check with the front desk before using the communal baths. While tattoos may restrict entry during peak hours, the staff can often recommend quieter times when you can bathe comfortably.
