Overview
TAOYA Gero, formerly Ooedo Onsen Monogatari Premium Gero Shinkan, gives you a highland hot spring resort stay in Gero, Gifu. The hotel reopened under the TAOYA name on June 23, 2025, after a rebrand from the former Premium Gero Shinkan.
You stay on elevated ground away from the busiest riverside streets, with views across South Hida’s mountains, the river valley, and the town of Gero. This setting works well when you want the atmosphere of Gero with more space around you, rather than staying directly in the centre of the hot spring town.
The hotel follows the TAOYA all-inclusive style, with lounge drinks, dinner drinks, late-night food service, hot spring bathing, a sauna, massage chairs, karaoke, table tennis, and resort-style public spaces available as part of the stay experience. You come here for wide views, buffet dining, shared hot spring baths, and a relaxed hotel stay within easy reach of Gero sightseeing.
Accommodation
TAOYA Gero offers non-smoking rooms in Japanese-style, Western-style, Japanese-Western, and suite layouts. The rooms suit couples, families, and groups, with options ranging from compact twin rooms to large suite rooms with several sleeping spaces.
The Standard Japanese-Western Twin with six tatami mats measures around 45 square metres and combines two beds with a tatami area. When you stay with three or four people, futons are prepared on the tatami. This room works well when you want both beds and Japanese floor space.
The Standard Japanese Room has 12.5 tatami mats and accommodates up to five people. You sleep on futons and have a simple ryokan-style layout while still using hotel facilities. The Superior Japanese-Western Twin on the top floor gives you a higher-level stay with two beds and tatami space, making it a good choice when the view and floor level matter.
The Standard Twin with shower only measures around 38 square metres and has two beds, with a sofa bed used for a third person. The Standard Japanese Bed Twin with shower only measures around 47 square metres and places beds on tatami flooring. These rooms do not have full in-room baths and use shower booths instead.
The Superior Japanese Bed Twin with Open-Air Bath was added in 2025. It measures around 32 square metres and has a private open-air bath and shower booth. The open-air bath is heated water, not hot spring water, so choose this room for privacy and scenery rather than private onsen bathing.
The suite rooms give you more space for a family or group stay. The Suite Japanese-Western Fourth with ten tatami mats measures around 90 square metres and accommodates up to six people. The Suite Japanese Bed Twin with 12 tatami mats plus six tatami mats also measures around 90 square metres and accommodates up to seven people. The Suite Japanese-Western Fourth with 12 tatami mats plus eight tatami mats measures around 135 square metres and gives you the largest room layout.
Room equipment includes Wi-Fi, television, refrigerator, kettle, tea set, safe, hairdryer, towels, slippers, yukata, shampoo, conditioner, body soap, toothbrush set, razor, brush, and shower cap. Some personal amenities are placed in the lobby or large-bath changing room rather than inside each room.
Dining
Dining at TAOYA Gero centres on buffet meals. Dinner and breakfast are served in the restaurant, with Japanese, Western, and Chinese-style dishes, local flavours, and live-kitchen items.
At dinner, one highlight is TAOYA’s roast beef served from the live kitchen. You can also enjoy Gifu and Hida-style dishes such as keichan chicken, hoba miso flavours, tsukemono steak, and other local dishes depending on the season. The buffet also includes seafood, meat dishes, vegetables, rice, noodles, desserts, and drinks.
Dinner drinks are part of the TAOYA stay style, including alcoholic and soft drink options. The dining room has wide windows and lets you enjoy the South Hida mountain view while eating.
Breakfast is also buffet style. Signature items can include TAOYA special seafood bowl, hoba miso katsu sandwich, French toast, rice, soup, grilled items, eggs, vegetables, bread, and drinks. You can choose a lighter breakfast or build a fuller meal before heading into Gero town.
A late-night food service is also available during scheduled hours, with duck nanban soba served when you want something small after dinner or after bathing.
Onsen and Wellness
The hot spring facilities are one of the main reasons to stay at TAOYA Gero. The hotel has two main bath areas, Sōun no Yu and Shinso no Yu, where you can enjoy indoor bathing, open-air or semi-open-air bathing, sauna time, water baths, and views across the mountains and town.
Sōun no Yu has a long bathing tub facing the South Hida scenery. You can look out over the mountains while soaking, and the bath area also includes a sauna and water bath. The design lets the view become part of the bathing experience.
Shinso no Yu gives you another bathing area with indoor and outdoor-style bathing. The two bath areas allow you to enjoy different views and moods during your stay.
The spring information lists the water as a hypotonic alkaline cold mineral spring. It qualifies as a hot spring under the Hot Springs Act due to its fluoride ion content, but it does not have a therapeutic spring name. The baths use heated, added, circulated, filtered water. This is not a free-flowing source bath.
The hotel does not have a reservable private hot spring bath. Rooms with private open-air baths use heated water, not hot spring water.
Guests with Tattoos
You cannot use the shared public baths if you have tattoos, unless your tattoos can be fully covered with the hotel’s designated cover seal. If the tattoo cannot be fully covered, you cannot use the shared large baths, open-air baths, sauna, or water bath.
TAOYA Gero does not have a reservable private hot spring bath. Rooms with open-air baths use heated water, not hot spring water.
Facilities
TAOYA Gero includes a guest lounge, restaurant, two public bath areas, sauna, water bath, after-bath lounge, massage chairs, karaoke rooms, table tennis, shop, vending machines, ice machine, parking, and Wi-Fi. The lounge is one of the main places to relax between check-in, bathing, and meals, with drinks and sweets served during scheduled hours.
The all-inclusive style also covers many in-house services, including lounge drinks, dinner drinks, late-night food service, and massage-chair use. This makes the stay easy when you want to spend time inside the hotel rather than moving around town for every meal or drink.
Karaoke and table tennis add a casual resort-hotel feeling, especially for families and small groups. The shop carries local snacks and souvenirs, while vending machines and the ice machine support simple needs during the stay.
The building is non-smoking except in designated smoking areas. Parking is available on site, and a reservation-based shuttle connects the hotel with Gero Station.
Activities
You can spend your time inside the hotel by moving between the lounge, baths, sauna, buffet restaurant, massage chairs, karaoke, and table tennis. This works well when you want a simple hot spring resort stay without planning every hour.
Gero town is also close enough for sightseeing. You can visit Gero Onsen Gassho Village, where gassho-style houses from areas such as Shirakawa-go have been relocated to create an open-air folk village. You can see old rural architecture, learn about Hida life, and try craft experiences.
Nearby sights include Gero Furusato Historical Memorial Museum, Funsenchi hot spring source area, Sagi no Ashiyu foot bath, Onsenji Temple, and the riverside streets of Gero. The town is known for foot baths, local sweets, small shops, and easy walks around the Hida River.
You can also use TAOYA Gero as part of a wider Hida route. Takayama, Hida-Furukawa, and the mountain areas of northern Gifu can all fit into a longer trip when your schedule allows.
Additional Features
Check-in begins at 3:00 p.m., and check-out is by 11:00 a.m. The hotel is located at Mori 1781, Gero, Gifu. From JR Gero Station, you can reach the hotel by taxi, on foot, or by the reservation-based shuttle.
By car, the hotel is around one hour from Nakatsugawa Interchange or around one hour from Gujo-Hachiman Interchange, depending on your route and road conditions. Winter roads in the Hida region can bring snow and ice, so winter tyres or chains are important during colder months.
TAOYA Gero suits you when you want a large hot spring resort hotel with mountain views, buffet meals, lounge service, shared baths, sauna time, and easy access to Gero sightseeing. Choose the open-air bath room only when you want a private heated-water bath, not a private onsen.
