Overview

Stay on a hillside above Takayama at Route Inn Grantia Hidatakayama Wakura no Yado. You can reach JR Takayama Station in around ten minutes by car, while Takayama’s preserved old town is also approximately ten minutes away.

The elevated setting gives you views across Takayama from selected rooms and Restaurant Hanachaya. A complimentary shuttle connects the hotel with Takayama Station, making the location practical when you prefer a quieter base outside the city centre.

After exploring Takayama, you can return for a natural hot spring bath, a buffet dinner with local dishes, and a comfortable room suited to solo travel, couples, families, or small groups.

Accommodation

Choose from single, semi-double, twin, Japanese, and Japanese-Western rooms. Each category is available in smoking and non-smoking options, so you can select the setting that suits your stay.

The Single Room measures approximately 13 square metres and includes a 120-centimetre-wide bed. Its compact layout works well when you travel alone or plan to spend most of your time sightseeing.

The Semi-Double Room measures approximately 14 square metres and has one 140-centimetre-wide bed. It gives you a simple choice for a short stay as a couple.

The Twin Room provides approximately 25 square metres of space and two single beds. This category can face Takayama city, allowing you to enjoy the lights across the town after dark.

Japanese rooms replace beds with tatami flooring and futon bedding. They give you more floor space for sitting together and suit you when you prefer a traditional sleeping arrangement.

Japanese-Western rooms combine two beds with a raised tatami area. Some layouts provide approximately 25 square metres with a 4.5-tatami area, while larger rooms offer approximately 37 square metres and a seven-tatami space. Futons can be prepared on the tatami when you stay with family or friends.

Twin, Japanese, and Japanese-Western rooms include Android televisions, allowing you to access compatible streaming services with your own account.

Every room has a private unit bathroom and washlet toilet. You also have heating and air conditioning, a refrigerator, electric kettle, tea and coffee cups, television, hair dryer, free Wi-Fi, wired internet access, and an air purifier with a humidifying function.

Room amenities include towels, jinbei loungewear, slippers, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand soap, toothbrushes, razors, combs, cotton swabs, body sponges, tea, and black tea.

Dining

Restaurant Hanachaya serves breakfast and dinner while looking across Takayama from the hillside. Both meals bring together familiar Japanese and Western dishes with flavours from the Hida region.

Breakfast is served as a buffet from 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. You can choose from rice, miso soup, salads, warm dishes, drinks, and regional food such as hōba miso yaki, one of Takayama’s best-known local dishes.

Fresh bread is baked inside the restaurant each morning. Choices may include croissants, butter rolls, and Danish pastries served warm from the oven.

Dinner normally takes the form of a buffet with around 30 dishes. Hōba miso yaki appears alongside Japanese and Western food, salads, fried dishes, rice, soup, and dessert.

Local sake from the Hida region is available with dinner, together with beer, shochu, and whisky. These drinks allow you to explore Takayama’s brewing culture without leaving the hotel.

Dinner is normally served from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., with final orders at 9:00 p.m. When advance reservations do not reach the number required for a full buffet, dinner may change to a prepared tray meal or a smaller buffet selection.

Onsen and Wellness

Tabibito-no-Yu is the natural hot spring bath on the first floor. Separate indoor bathing areas are provided for men and women, allowing you to stretch out in the warm water after sightseeing or a long journey.

The water comes from Matsukura Yunoyama Onsen. It is a clear, colourless simple spring classified as hypotonic, weakly alkaline, and naturally low in temperature.

The spring water is gentle against the skin and is sometimes described as a beauty bath because of its smooth bathing feel. Recognised bathing indications include fatigue, sensitivity to cold, muscle and joint stiffness, neuralgia, lower-back discomfort, frozen shoulder, bruises, sprains, circulation concerns, and recovery after illness.

The natural water is heated and diluted when necessary and uses a circulation and filtration system to maintain a comfortable temperature and support hygiene.

You can use the baths from 3:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m. and again from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. This schedule gives you time for a late soak after dinner or an early bath before breakfast.

The changing areas provide hair dryers, lotion, moisturiser, cotton swabs, and other grooming items. The women’s area also includes cleansing oil, brushes, and cotton pads, while the men’s area provides shaving foam and razors.

A shampoo bar lets you choose from several shampoos and conditioners. Near the bath entrance, you can sit in the rest area or buy a drink from the vending machines.

There is no open-air bath, sauna, or reservable private onsen. All natural hot spring bathing takes place in the shared indoor baths.

Guests with Tattoos

You can use Tabibito-no-Yu when every tattoo is completely covered with a suitable cover sticker. The covering must remain secure throughout your time in the bathing area.

Cover stickers measuring 11.4 by 20 centimetres are available at reception. When your tattoos cannot be fully hidden, you cannot use the shared hot spring baths. There is no private onsen available as an alternative.

Facilities

The lobby gives you a spacious place to sit while waiting for check-in, the station shuttle, or your next outing. A large sarubobo figure introduces you to one of Hida Takayama’s best-known local symbols as soon as you enter.

The souvenir corner sells sarubobo goods and regional products from Takayama. It opens in the morning and again from the afternoon into the evening, allowing you to browse before sightseeing or after dinner.

Restaurant Hanachaya serves breakfast and dinner, while the natural hot spring bath and its relaxation area sit on the first floor. Vending machines and an ice service provide drinks and refreshments between meals.

Coin-operated washing machines and dryers make longer stays easier. Cleaning, parcel delivery, photocopying, fax services, and mobile phone charger loans are also available.

Free Wi-Fi and wired internet access are provided in the rooms. You can also watch WOWOW channels without an additional charge.

Free outdoor parking is available for 106 vehicles. Two standard 6 kW charging points are provided for electric vehicles, and charging reservations can be arranged for an overnight stay.

Activities

Use the hotel as a base for exploring Takayama’s preserved old town, where wooden merchant houses, sake breweries, cafés, and small shops line the historic streets. The journey takes around ten minutes by car.

The Miyagawa and Jinya-mae morning markets give you the chance to browse local produce, flowers, pickles, sweets, and handmade products. Takayama Jinya and the red Nakabashi Bridge are also within easy reach.

Hida Folk Village is around eight minutes away by car. This open-air museum brings together more than 30 traditional houses, including steep-roofed buildings designed for the heavy snow of the Hida region.

The Hida Takayama Teddy Bear Eco Village is also around eight minutes away by car. Its collection of teddy bears is displayed inside a restored gassho-style house.

You can also visit Takayama Festival Forest, the Hida Takayama Museum of Art area, or travel farther into the countryside toward Shirakawa-go, Okuhida, and the Northern Japanese Alps.

Check-in begins at 3:00 p.m., and check-out is by 11:00 a.m.

A complimentary shuttle connects the hotel with the west side of JR Takayama Station. The journey takes around 15 minutes, and buses operate at scheduled times in the morning and from mid-afternoon into the evening. Selected early services require an advance reservation.

When you arrive by car, the hotel is approximately 15 minutes from Takayama Interchange and around 18 minutes from Takayama-Nishi Interchange.
