Overview

Ryokan Ogawa is a renovated hot spring ryokan in Izu Shimoda, first established in 1975. You stay in a simple, stylish inn with a relaxed seaside-town feeling, close to Shimoda Bay, the fish market, Roadside Station Bay Stage, Mado-ga-hama Kaiyu Park, and clear-water beaches. Izukyu-Shimoda Station is about a 10-minute walk away, so you can arrive by train and explore much of central Shimoda on foot.

This ryokan works well when you want a flexible, room-only stay with natural hot spring bathing, clean Japanese-style rooms, coffee, bicycle rental, and easy access to the town. You are not tied to set meal times, so you can use the ryokan as a comfortable base for seafood, beaches, history walks, and short trips around the Izu Peninsula.

Accommodation

You stay in rooms that blend Japanese and Western design, with a calm black-and-white color palette. Both Japanese-style and Western-style rooms use futon bedding, keeping the stay close to a ryokan style. All rooms are non-smoking, and you set up and put away your own futon.

Room options include non-smoking rooms with a shower and non-smoking rooms without a shower. Expedia lists the rooms at around 15㎡, with partial sea views, free Wi-Fi, individual furnishings, a desk, refrigerator, electric kettle, and flat-screen TV with cable channels. Some rooms sleep on twin futons, and you can choose the room type depending on whether you want your own shower or prefer to use the shared bathing area.

In-room and stay amenities include Wi-Fi, air conditioning, refrigerator, kettle, TV, shampoo, conditioner, body soap, towels, bath towels, toothbrush set, hair dryer, yukata, and slippers. Microwaves may be available on request, and luggage storage is available when needed.

Dining

Ryokan Ogawa is a room-only ryokan, so dinner and breakfast are not included. This gives you full freedom to eat around Shimoda instead of following a fixed dining schedule. The ryokan is close to the fish market and local restaurants, so you can build your stay around seafood, cafés, and casual meals in town.

You also have The Black Ship Coffee on site, established in 2016. You can enjoy filter coffee, espresso, matcha, hojicha, chai, ice cream floats, affogato, smoothies, craft beer, chocolate, and Kimino drinks. This makes the ryokan especially convenient when you want a relaxed coffee stop before heading out or after returning from a walk.

Onsen and Wellness

Ryokan Ogawa has natural hot spring bathing in a simple shared-bath setting. The baths are not large public baths, but they use natural source-flowing hot spring water.

The spring is listed as a simple hot spring, classified as hypotonic, weakly alkaline, and high-temperature.

If you have tattoos, you can ask the staff about private bathing options.

Facilities

Ryokan Ogawa keeps facilities straightforward and practical, making your stay easy and comfortable.

You use free Wi-Fi throughout the building, store luggage when needed, and take advantage of laundry services during longer stays. Bicycle rentals allow you to explore Shimoda beyond the immediate neighborhood, giving you access to quieter streets and scenic coastal routes. If you arrive by car, on-site parking makes travel simple.

The front desk operates during set hours, creating a calm and independent atmosphere. You move at your own pace, coming and going without formality.

Activities

From the ryokan, you can explore Shimoda on foot or by bicycle. Beaches lie close enough for morning walks or afternoon swims during warmer months. Coastal paths offer wide ocean views, while historic streets lead you past temples and old buildings connected to Shimoda’s role in Japanese history.

You can visit nearby temples, stroll along canals, or explore local markets selling fresh seafood and regional products. Train and bus access from Shimoda Station makes day trips across the Izu Peninsula easy, whether you head toward waterfalls, cliffs, or smaller coastal villages.

Additional Features

Ryokan Ogawa suits you if you value simplicity, location, and a traditional atmosphere without excess formality. The ryokan focuses on what matters most: clean rooms, warm baths, and an easy connection to the surrounding town.

You experience daily life in Shimoda at a natural pace, stepping outside to explore and returning to a quiet space at night. If you want a ryokan that feels grounded, approachable, and well placed for coastal travel, this stay fits naturally into your journey.
