Overview
Step into the heart of Matsuzaki, a quiet town where time slows down and the charm of the Meiji era still lingers. Ryokan Onyado Shinshima invites you to discover the history, nature, and traditional craftsmanship of this region through a stay that celebrates beauty and simplicity. Located near the Izu Peninsula Geopark and the scenic Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, this ryokan offers more than just a room—it offers a glimpse into the soul of Izu.
On the property, you’ll find a special treasure: a kura-style room decorated with original plaster reliefs (kote-e) created in 1880 by master craftsman Irie Chohachi. These unique works are part of what makes your stay here an immersion into Matsuzaki’s rich cultural past.
Accommodation
You can choose from 13 cozy rooms spread across the East and West wings, with options ranging from classic tatami rooms to western-style bedrooms. Some rooms face the peaceful river, while others offer views of the mountains. Whether you pick a traditional space with futons or a western-style room with beds, you’ll feel the warmth and comfort of thoughtful design.
Each room includes a private toilet, refrigerator, towels, yukata, toiletries, and a hairdryer. Several rooms also offer bathtubs. Special touches like colorful yukata for women let you enjoy the feeling of slipping into a different time and place.
Dining
Enjoy the flavors of Izu in every dish you eat. The kitchen brings in local seafood from Suruga Bay and seasonal ingredients to create a balanced blend of Japanese and Western styles. Every plate reflects the current season and the chef’s attention to detail.
Meals take place in relaxed, semi-private spaces like the dining room “Chohachi no Kura” or the banquet rooms “Suruga” and “Fuji.” From slow-cooked beef stew to beautifully presented fresh fish, each dish invites you to slow down and savor the moment. Be sure to pair your meal with one of the ryokan’s carefully selected wines or original shochu.
Onsen and Wellness
Let the warmth of natural spring water wash away your stress. The onsen baths at Shinshima use 100% free-flowing hot spring water from Matsuzaki Onsen. Rich in minerals and gentle on your skin, the water soothes muscle aches and refreshes your body.
You can unwind in two different open-air baths and several indoor baths, including private family-use options. Each bath is made from rare Izu stone, which enhances the healing properties of the water through far-infrared effects. At night, the outdoor baths let you soak under the stars while surrounded by nature and traditional architecture.
Guests with Tattoos
You’re welcome to enjoy the onsen, including private bath options, even if you have tattoos. The ryokan offers a comfortable and inclusive environment.
Facilities
Take in the handcrafted charm that fills every corner of the building. Throughout the ryokan, you’ll find seasonal woodblock prints donated by artist Ichisato Masuda, as well as sculptures and art pieces made from sea glass and driftwood by the head chef.
One of the most unique spaces is the relocated kura (storehouse) building, which now forms the ryokan’s main lobby. It houses plaster reliefs by Irie Chohachi that remain fixed to the original architecture. This rare preservation allows you to experience traditional Japanese craftsmanship up close.
Activities
Explore the local history by viewing the rare plaster artwork that lines the kura walls. You can only view this artwork if you’re staying overnight. Make sure to ask the staff for details.
During your stay, take a walk through the old streets of Matsuzaki, admire the traditional namako-kabe walls, or join a guided tour of the Izu Geopark. These experiences help connect you with the region’s natural wonders and historical depth.
