Overview

Since 1868, Yama no Yado Shimofujiya has welcomed travelers to the peaceful mountain hot spring region of Okushiobara. Now in its sixth generation of family ownership, this ryokan continues to honor its traditions while providing you with a stay filled with exceptional hospitality, seasonal cuisine, and rejuvenating baths. Over the years, many influential figures have stayed here, drawn by the inn’s ever-flowing sulfur spring, celebrated dishes, and warm atmosphere.

The surrounding Okushiobara Hot Spring Village is rich in natural beauty, with lush forests, flowing rivers, and the distinctive scent of volcanic minerals in the air. Staying here lets you experience Japan’s countryside at its most authentic, all while enjoying a ryokan steeped in history and local pride.

Accommodation

Shimofujiya offers several room styles, each designed with comfort and relaxation in mind.

Modern Style Rooms: Located on the third and fourth floors, these newly remodeled rooms are decorated to maximize comfort. Large windows bring in views of Okushiobara’s natural scenery, while comfortable seating areas give you a cozy space to unwind.

Premium Rooms: Each features a private Japanese cypress bath. The delicate fragrance of the wood adds to the pleasure of soaking in your own hot spring. Spacious layouts include a veranda and traditional shower space.

Japanese and Japanese-Western Rooms: You can choose a pure Japanese-style room with tatami flooring or a mixed room with twin beds and an adjoining tatami space. Many of these are especially popular for their elegant yet simple design and tranquil views.

Every room comes equipped with yukata, towels, bathrobes, a hair dryer, and a selection of toiletries. In the women’s bathing area, you’ll find extra amenities such as skincare products, cotton pads, and hair accessories, while the men’s area offers lotions, tonics, and razors.

Dining

Meals at Shimofujiya celebrate the flavors of each season, using locally sourced vegetables, river fish, mountain plants, and premium meats.

Dinner features specialties such as:

  • A5 Rank Kuroge Wagyu Beef: Locally raised in Tochigi Prefecture, this beef offers exquisite marbling and a melt-in-your-mouth texture.
  • Sangenton Pork: A blend of three breeds, renowned for its balance of richness and umami.
  • Stream-Farmed Char Fish: Raised in pristine mountain waters, served grilled, as sashimi, or in traditional sake preparations.

Breakfast includes locally grown vegetables, organic tofu, and the famous Nasuno Goyou Ran eggs, known for their rich flavor and vibrant color. Everything is freshly prepared each morning to help you start your day feeling energized.

Onsen and Wellness

The highlight of Shimofujiya is its ever-flowing sulfur spring (kakenagashi onsen), sourced directly from Okushiobara Shin Hot Spring—the only sulfur spring in the area. The water emerges at a naturally high temperature and flows into the baths without any added treatment.

Grand Bath: Built from aromatic Japanese cypress and filled with mineral-rich, slightly cloudy water known for its beautifying and detoxifying qualities.

Outdoor Garden Bath: Surrounded by greenery, this bath lets you soak under the open sky. In the evening, it is available for private reservations.

Nearby Public Springs: Within a few minutes’ walk, you can visit local open-air baths such as Mujina no Yu, Naka no Yu, and Tera no Yu, each offering a unique bathing experience.

The high mineral content is said to improve circulation, ease muscle and joint pain, and leave your skin soft and smooth.

Guests with Tattoos

If you have tattoos, you can enjoy the outdoor garden bath during private rental hours or soak in nearby public baths without restrictions.
