Overview

Stay at a ryokan where history feels alive. Tounomine Kanko Hotel sits directly in front of Tanzan Shrine—the legendary site where Naka-no-Oe and Nakatomi no Kamatari are said to have discussed the Taika Reform. This sacred mountain once held over 40 temples and more than 3,000 warrior monks. Today, the peaceful setting remains, offering you a quiet escape filled with nature and cultural depth.

The hotel has welcomed travelers for over a century. Surrounded by seasonal beauty and deep-rooted history, this is where you can take a breath, relax, and rediscover a sense of calm.

Accommodation

The hotel has two buildings: the five-story Main Building and the East Wing with three above-ground floors and one underground. From most rooms, you’ll enjoy scenic views of Tanzan Shrine or the forests of Tounomine.

Main Building Japanese-Style Rooms (10–12 tatami mats) Ideal for two people, these rooms include a unit bath. Most offer a view of the thirteen-story pagoda of Tanzan Shrine.

East Wing Japanese-Style Rooms with Extra Room Great for families or groups up to five. These rooms have a sofa space and a layout designed for comfort. The East Wing also provides wheelchair access from the lobby to the room.

Other options include Western-style rooms with twin beds, mixed Western-Japanese rooms, and larger Japanese-style rooms for groups. Every room comes with free Wi-Fi.

As a special bonus, your stay includes a pass that allows unlimited visits to Tanzan Shrine from check-in to check-out. Walk through the grounds during the day, enjoy quiet moments in the evening, or greet the morning with a peaceful stroll.

Dining

Dining at the hotel celebrates the seasonal flavors of Nara. The kitchen focuses on Yamato pork, Yamato beef, and fresh local ingredients like Miwa somen noodles, Yoshino kudzu, and seasonal fruits and vegetables.

Yoshitsune Hot Pot This is the hotel’s signature dish. Named after the heroic general Minamoto no Yoshitsune, it’s prepared with five types of meat and a variety of vegetables. Grill and simmer everything at your table in a pot shaped like Yoshitsune’s sword guard, using a secret sauce passed down over generations. The dish honors a legend in which a temple priest offered refuge and food to Yoshitsune during his escape.

Seasonal Kaiseki Courses The kaiseki meals highlight Nara’s regional products. You’ll enjoy fresh sashimi, steamed dishes, simmered vegetables, and more—each course designed to reflect the current season and showcase the richness of local ingredients.

Special Requests and Dietary Needs The hotel can prepare special meals for vegans, children, seniors, or anyone with allergies or ingredient preferences. Let the staff know two days in advance so they can prepare something tailored just for you.

Celebration Options For birthdays or anniversaries, you can request cakes, bouquets, or luxury plating like whole grilled fish or sashimi boats. Just make sure to book in advance.

Meals are served in private rooms or scenic restaurant spaces. For added comfort, your meal time is a generous three hours, allowing you to relax and enjoy without being rushed.

Onsen and Wellness

Tounomine Kanko Hotel has two large communal baths—Mine-no-Yu and Tou-no-Yu—each designed with natural stone and views of a flowing waterfall. These alternate between men and women in the morning and evening. Both baths include saunas for deep relaxation.

Guests with Tattoos The hotel does not list a specific tattoo policy. If you plan to use the public baths and have tattoos, it may be helpful to contact the hotel ahead of time.
