Overview

Taishoya Ryokan stands in the heart of Ureshino, home to one of Japan’s most famous hot springs known for its skin-smoothing waters. For nearly 100 years, Taishoya has welcomed travelers to experience the gentle elegance of traditional Japanese hospitality. When you step inside, the noise of daily life fades away. Even though you’re in the center of Ureshino’s onsen town, the peaceful surroundings make you feel like you’re far from everything. Designed by the late Junzo Yoshimura, a renowned architect who also helped design the Imperial Palace, the ryokan features refined wooden interiors that reflect timeless Japanese aesthetics.

Taishoya has a sister property, Shiibasanso, located in a quiet valley just a five-minute drive to the south. Both ryokans invite you to enjoy a unique bathing experience called “Two Inns, Four Baths.” You can move between both properties and soak in four different baths, each with its own character. Taishoya continues to preserve traditional hospitality while offering thoughtful service in every corner of your stay.

Accommodation

Taishoya blends tradition with simplicity. The rooms showcase classic Japanese style—tatami flooring, sliding paper doors, and minimal decoration—all designed to help you slow down and relax. Choose from several room types, each offering a calm space where you can unwind after a long soak in the bath.

Some rooms include garden views, while others overlook quiet courtyards. All rooms come with air conditioning and heating, along with yukata robes and basic toiletries. While staying at Taishoya, you can expect your futon to be prepared while you enjoy your evening bath, adding a touch of comfort to the rhythm of your day.

Dining

Your stay at Taishoya includes carefully prepared meals that highlight local flavors. Dinner is served in your room, giving you privacy and a chance to enjoy traditional Japanese cuisine at your own pace. The menu features seasonal ingredients and local specialties, including the ryokan’s signature dish—Ureshino’s famous “melting tofu.” This dish is known for its silky texture and rich flavor, created by simmering tofu in hot spring water.

In the morning, you’ll enjoy a Japanese-style breakfast with steamed rice, grilled fish, pickled vegetables, and more. The ingredients are simple but selected with care, offering a nourishing start to your day.

Onsen and Wellness

Ureshino’s hot spring water is rich in sodium bicarbonate, which gently removes dead skin and leaves your body feeling smooth. Taishoya offers spacious communal baths where you can soak in this famous water. The baths are designed with natural materials like wood and stone, adding to the calm atmosphere.

As part of the “Two Inns, Four Baths” program, you can also visit Shiibasanso and try their baths for a change of scenery. Whether you choose a morning soak or an evening bath under the stars, the onsen at Taishoya invites you to let go and relax.

Guests with Tattoos

If you have tattoos, you can use the private baths available by reservation. Please speak with the front desk to arrange a time that works for you.

Facilities

Taishoya features quiet sitting areas and walkways that encourage you to take your time. The garden is filled with tall cedar trees, offering shade and calm. You’ll also find a traditional lobby space where you can relax with tea or simply listen to the sounds of nature.

Shops inside the ryokan offer local products, including Ureshino tea, handmade soaps, and ceramic items. If you find something you love, you can also order these items later through the ryokan’s online shop.

Activities

If you’re staying more than one night, explore both Taishoya and Shiibasanso. The two properties offer a change of pace—Taishoya sits in town, while Shiibasanso is surrounded by nature. Both offer the famous Ureshino hot spring experience.

During your visit, take time to enjoy local crafts or try a cup of freshly brewed Ureshino tea. The area is also known for pottery, and nearby shops carry handmade pieces you can bring home as souvenirs.

If you’re planning a special celebration, Taishoya also offers one exclusive wedding per day. Whether it’s a ceremony or a private gathering, the staff helps you create a memorable moment.
