Overview
Step out of JR Kyoto Station and reach Hotel Sanoya in around three minutes. With JR trains, the Shinkansen, the subway, Kintetsu services, and city buses close by, you can move around Kyoto with ease and continue your journey across the Kansai region.
Behind this convenient city-centre location, you will find the atmosphere of a traditional Japanese inn. Tatami rooms, seasonal Kyoto cuisine, spacious communal baths, and warm hospitality give you a restful place to return to after a full day of sightseeing.
Kyoto Tower and Higashi Honganji Temple are within walking distance, while Kyoto Station provides simple connections to areas such as Fushimi, Arashiyama, Gion, Osaka, and Nara.
Accommodation
Most rooms at Hotel Sanoya follow a traditional Japanese design, with tatami flooring, timber details, low furniture, and space to sit and relax. Japanese rooms range from 10 to 26 tatami mats, giving you options for a couple’s stay, a family trip, or time away with friends.
The 10-tatami room is the standard choice and provides a comfortable setting for resting between days of sightseeing. The larger 14-tatami room gives you more space to sit together, while the 20-tatami room works well when you are travelling with family or friends. Even larger Japanese rooms may be available depending on your selected plan.
A small number of Western-style rooms are also available. These rooms come with twin beds and offer a practical alternative when you prefer sleeping on a raised bed instead of futon bedding.
Every room has its own bathroom, washbasin, and toilet with a washlet. You will also have air conditioning and heating, a television, telephone, refrigerator, hairdryer, towels, yukata, toiletries, and free Wi-Fi. The combination of a private bathroom and access to the communal baths lets you choose how you prefer to unwind.
Dining
Dinner gives you the chance to discover the careful flavours and presentation of Kyoto cooking. The seasonal Kyoto kaiseki menu is prepared by a chef with more than 30 years of experience in Kyoto and makes thoughtful use of ingredients at their best during each season.
A kaiseki meal may include sashimi, tempura, simmered dishes, grilled items, and delicately arranged seasonal courses. The exact menu changes, allowing each visit to reflect a different time of year.
You can also select one of Hotel Sanoya’s hot-pot meals. The special miso chanko brings meat, vegetables, and other ingredients together in a rich broth. Sukiyaki features carefully selected wagyu beef cooked with tofu and vegetables, while shabu-shabu lets you cook thin slices of meat and vegetables in hot broth at your table.
In the morning, you can begin your day with a Japanese set breakfast. Miso soup, tofu, grilled fish, and simmered dishes create a warm and balanced meal before you head out to explore Kyoto.
Meals may be served in a dining room, banquet room, or private dining setting depending on your accommodation plan.
Onsen and Wellness
Hotel Sanoya’s baths are spacious communal bathing facilities rather than natural hot spring baths. The water comes from Kyoto groundwater and is heated for bathing, giving you a welcome place to soak after walking through Kyoto.
Kutsurogi-no-Yu is the largest bathing area, with a wide bath and plenty of washing space. You can stretch out in the warm water and ease tired legs after visiting temples, gardens, and shopping streets.
Seseragi-no-Yu was renovated in September 2023 and includes a sauna. Its refreshed bathing area gives you another comfortable space for an evening soak.
A smaller Family Bath also forms part of the bathing facilities. This bath should not be described as a reservable private bath, as private-use reservations are not included among Hotel Sanoya’s services.
The main baths normally open from 4:00 p.m. until 12:30 a.m. Morning bathing may be available from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. during busy periods, with availability confirmed when you check in. The men’s and women’s bath assignments may change, so check the signs before entering.
Guests with Tattoos
You may use the communal baths when every tattoo is completely covered with a waterproof seal. Please bring your own seals, as Hotel Sanoya does not supply them.
Facilities
The spacious first-floor lobby welcomes you with seasonal flower displays and comfortable seating. You can pause here before heading out, meet the people travelling with you, or relax after returning from the city. Coffee is available in the lounge for an additional charge.
Free Wi-Fi is available in every room and in the first-floor lobby. You can also leave your luggage at the front desk when you arrive before check-in, giving you more freedom to begin sightseeing straight away.
The souvenir shop carries a selection of Kyoto gifts, allowing you to browse local keepsakes without leaving the property.
Dining and event spaces include Dining Arashiyama, Restaurant Higashiyama, and Japanese banquet rooms. Saga-no-Ma is a large tatami hall with a stage and can be divided into two sections, while Gosho-no-Ma provides another traditional setting for meals, meetings, and celebrations.
Two elevators connect the accommodation floors, and an accessible public toilet is available on the sixth floor.
Activities
Hotel Sanoya places Kyoto’s transport network almost at your doorstep. From Kyoto Station, you can take trains, buses, or the subway to temples, shrines, shopping areas, museums, and historic neighbourhoods across the city.
Start nearby with Kyoto Tower or walk to Higashi Honganji Temple. You can also travel by JR train to Fushimi Inari Taisha, continue west towards Arashiyama, or use city buses and the subway to reach Kiyomizu-dera, Gion, Nijo Castle, and the Kyoto Imperial Palace.
Kyoto Station also makes day trips simple. Direct rail connections allow you to explore Nara, Osaka, Kobe, and the Lake Biwa area before returning to your tatami room and a long evening bath.
Additional Features
Hotel Sanoya combines a central Kyoto location with the main elements of a Japanese inn. You can stay in a tatami room, wear a yukata, enjoy Kyoto cuisine, and relax in a large communal bath without giving up easy access to the city’s main transport hub.
Free Wi-Fi, bathrooms in every room, luggage storage before check-in, a sauna, banquet and dining rooms, a souvenir shop, two elevators, and nearby rail, subway, and bus services support a convenient stay in Kyoto.
