Overview

You arrive in tranquil Taiza, a small fishing town on the Tango Peninsula of northern Kyoto. Built nearly a century ago, Shorenkan Yoshinoya Ryokan has earned its reputation as a cuisine inn specializing in Umi‑no‑Kyo‑Ryori, the “Sea‑Kyoto” gastronomy drawing from the richness of Sea of Japan. Each season, the ryokan delivers curated seafood dishes crafted with precision. As you enter the lobby, the wooden pillars, stained glass, and sweeping staircase evoke nostalgic Showa‑era elegance. The view reflects decades of devotion to food, tradition, and refined hospitality.

Accommodation

Choose from twelve rooms that blend traditional Japanese layout with western conveniences. The Main Building Japanese-style rooms offer sweeping views over Taiza town and the Sea of Japan, and come with tatami space and modern toilets. Stainless 32″ TVs and air conditioning ensure comfort. Mountain View Japanese‑Western twin rooms offer quiet privacy for two, with separate living spaces. The Annex offers both Japanese‑Western rooms with ensuite bathrooms and classic Japanese rooms with toilets. Room windows face either the sea or mountain, and interiors evoke Showa charm with clean, minimalist design. Female guests receive extra amenities such as cleansing kits and all‑in‑one gel.

Dining

The hotel invites you into the world of Sea‑Kyoto cuisine, with a focus on quality, seasonality, and local craftsmanship. The ryokan’s signature ingredient is Taiza Crab, a highly prized Matsuba crab landed only by five local boats in Taiza Fishing Port. The second‑generation chef, certified as a Contemporary Craftsman of Kyoto, developed signature golden soup broth to bring out the crab’s umami, and introduced techniques such as real crab sashimi, crab-shabu, charcoal grilling, and crab miso soup.

In spring, enjoy oversized meval fish (silver sea bream) and freshest scallops.

Summer brings “ocean milk” rock oysters, tall Japanese mussels, white squid, and rosy seabass (nodoguro) from the Sea of Japan.

Autumn rewards you with throat‑black (nodo‑guro) fish and firm‑textured abalone.

During winter, you taste the rarest Taiza Crab harvested from only five local boats. Every plate showcases Tango’s finest seasonal bounty.

The contrast of Showa‑style dining halls and individually raised tatami rooms ensures a private and luxurious experience. You can grill seafood over charcoal, enjoy a multi-course shellfish menu, or savor sashimi in a calm, traditional setting.

Onsen and Wellness

You can soak in several hot spring baths:

  • Syoren-no-yu, a large communal indoor bath with high ceilings, stained glass windows, Mexican tile floors, and pillars, evokes mid‑century charm.
  • Bidoro-no-yu is an open-air bath overlooking the Sea of Japan—feel the sea breeze, twinkling lights of fishing boats in summer, or snow-laced vistas in winter.
  • If you prefer privacy, you can reserve the Danran-no-yu private bath for an intimate soak with family or loved ones.

All baths use clear, odorless Taiza hot spring water rich in calcium and sodium, providing natural relief for neuralgia, gout, and muscle stiffness. Shampoo, body soap, and towel amenities are provided. Female guests enjoy exclusive powder room facilities for extra comfort.

Guests with Tattoos

While shared baths may have restrictions on visible tattoos, private bath reservations offer a worry‑free alternative. Confirm policies when you book or check in.

Facilities

The lobby and lounge provide comfortable space to relax after arrival, with coffee service and views through nostalgic stained‑glass windows. A private dining hall seats up to 40 in tatami‑raised booths; small private dining rooms (up to eight) accommodate two to four people. The hotel supports female travelers with thoughtful amenities, and you can charge EV vehicles at a nearby station if needed. Credit cards including Visa, MasterCard, AmEx, and others are accepted.

Activities

From the ryokan, you can stroll Taiza’s traditional alleys and sea‑facing rooftops, visit the YoUzura Jojima lighthouse at the northern tip of Kyoto, or explore the geopark landscape along the Tango coast. Local fishermen still use traditional ports, and during evening walks you might glimpse fishing lanterns on the horizon. The quiet town invites you to slow your pace and connect with the rhythms of sea and sky.
