Overview

Step into a ryokan where flowing natural hot springs meet the artistry of master carpenters. Yamanokami Onsen Yukouen sits in the heart of Hanamaki Minami Onsenkyo, between the quiet mountains and the clear waters of the Toyosawa River. This ryokan has earned multiple awards, including second place in Iwate’s 2022 “Most Enjoyable Ryokan” ranking and third place in the 2023 “Best-Selling Ryokan” category for medium-sized inns.

Here, five different hot spring sources feed the baths, each offering silky, mineral-rich water. The small floating minerals, called yuno-hana, prove that the water is never recycled or diluted. Throughout the building, intricate lattice ceilings and wooden carvings crafted by master carpenters create a warm and authentic atmosphere.

Accommodation

You can choose from a variety of room styles:

  • Japanese-style one-room suites: Spacious tatami rooms without partitions, available in several sizes.
  • Two-room Japanese-Western suites: A tatami room and a twin bedroom, ideal if you prefer sleeping in beds or traveling with two families.
  • Three-room suites: Two tatami rooms plus a bedroom for even more space.
  • Luxury suites “Hana” and “Miyabi”: Complete with a Japanese room, living area, bedroom, and sunroom, offering panoramic views of the surrounding nature.
  • Newly built Japanese and Japanese-Western rooms: Modern interpretations of traditional spaces, some overlooking the river.

All rooms come with a TV, refrigerator, safe, electric kettle, tea set, and personal toiletries. Smoking and non-smoking options are available. Some rooms are located close to the large public baths and private baths for convenient access.

Dining

Your stay includes carefully prepared meals featuring the best of Iwate. Enjoy tender Iwate beef, rich Maesawa beef, flavorful Shirokane pork, and fresh seafood from the Sanriku coast, paired with local vegetables. Dinner is served as multi-course kaiseki, with three menu levels:

  • Saika: A more casual course featuring Shirokane pork and fresh local fish.
  • Kagetsu: The most popular choice, highlighting premium Iwate beef.
  • Miyabi: The top-tier course, centered on Maesawa beef and other select seasonal ingredients.

Breakfast is a Japanese-Western buffet with fresh vegetables, egg dishes, and regional specialties. You can also enhance your dinner with optional à la carte dishes, paired with local sake or shochu.

Onsen and Wellness

The hot spring baths at Yukouen use water from five different natural sources, all flowing directly into the baths without circulation. The silky texture feels like lotion on your skin.

Bath options include:

  • Toyosawa no Yu: The largest open-air bath in Hanamaki Onsenkyo, with sweeping views of the river and starry night skies loved by poet Kenji Miyazawa.
  • Komorebi no Yu: An open-air bath illuminated at night by a soft blue glow, with an adjacent sauna.
  • Indoor baths: Spacious, high-ceilinged rooms with traditional ceramic mural art.
  • Private baths: Available by reservation, perfect if you want a more secluded soak.

The spring water is an alkaline simple hot spring (pH 9.3), clear with a faint sulfur scent, and is said to leave your skin smooth and refreshed.

Guests with Tattoos

If you have tattoos, you can use the private baths without restrictions. Simply make a reservation at the front desk.
