Overview

Slow down in the mountain setting of Omachi Onsen-kyo at Hotel Yume-no-yu, a small hot spring stay close to the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. You can spend your day exploring Kurobe Dam, the Northern Alps, Hakuba, or Azumino before returning for two different bathing experiences and a generous Shinshu dinner.

The bright lobby was renewed in 2016, while new rooms joined the accommodation selection in 2022. A self-playing piano adds character to the entrance, and the warm, informal atmosphere makes it easy to settle in after a long journey.

Hotel Yume-no-yu sits around ten minutes by car or bus from JR Shinano-Omachi Station. Kurobe Dam is around 40 minutes away, making this a convenient base for an early start on the Alpine Route.

Accommodation

Choose from Japanese rooms with futon bedding, Japanese-inspired twin rooms with Simmons beds, and a spacious Japanese-Western room with its own semi-open-air scenic bath. Every room is non-smoking and includes free Wi-Fi.

The ten-tatami Japanese Room gives you a traditional space with tatami flooring and a private unit bath and toilet. Depending on the room arrangement, you can sleep on futons or use a low bed-style setup.

The 20-tatami Japanese Room provides much more floor space for a family or group. You can gather around the low table during the day before futons are arranged across the tatami for the night.

The newer Japanese Room combines ten-tatami and eight-tatami spaces within one accommodation. Sliding doors allow you to use the two areas together or create more separation when you want a quieter sleeping space.

On the top floor, the 33-square-metre Japanese-Modern Twin Room features Ryukyu-style tatami and two Simmons beds. This room gives you the look and feel of a Japanese space without requiring you to sleep on a futon.

For a more private stay, choose one of the two top-floor Japanese-Western rooms with a semi-open-air scenic bath. A twin bedroom with Simmons beds connects to an eight-tatami Japanese room, giving you space to sleep, sit, and relax separately. From the bath, you can look across the rural landscape at the foot of the Northern Alps. The private bath uses regular heated water rather than natural hot spring water.

Room equipment includes air conditioning, heating, a television, air purifier, electric kettle, tea set, private bathing facilities, and Washlet toilet. Towels, yukata, toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, body soap, razors, shower caps, and hair dryers are also provided.

Dining

Dinner brings you generous handmade kaiseki dishes prepared with ingredients associated with Shinshu. Every standard dinner includes Shinshu Premium Beef, giving you a chance to taste one of Nagano’s best-known regional meats without leaving the property.

The Yumeji Dinner includes ten dishes centred on Shinshu Premium Beef sukiyaki. You cook the thin beef slices with vegetables in a rich, sweet-savoury sauce and enjoy them alongside rice and the accompanying seasonal courses.

For a larger meal, the Daimanzoku Dinner includes 13 dishes. Shinshu Premium Beef sukiyaki remains a highlight, while the hotel’s beef stew adds a comforting Western-style dish to the Japanese course.

Seasonal menus change throughout the year. Autumn is especially closely linked with matsutake mushrooms, while additional dishes may include local river fish and other ingredients from Nagano. Extra choices include Shinshu beef steak and salt-grilled iwana when available.

Breakfast combines Japanese and Western elements and is prepared fresh each morning. A pot of warm miso soup accompanies rice, bread, vegetables, eggs, and changing side dishes. During the Alpine Route operating season, an earlier breakfast start helps you begin your mountain journey in good time.

Dinner and breakfast are served in the dining room rather than inside your room. You can also choose a breakfast-only or room-only stay when you want more freedom over your evening plans.

Onsen and Wellness

Enjoy two different bathing experiences inside the shared bathhouse. One bath contains natural Omachi Kuzu Onsen water, while the second contains Yume-no-yu’s original medicinal blend.

Omachi Kuzu Onsen is classified as a simple spring with weakly alkaline, hypotonic, high-temperature qualities. The clear, gentle water is traditionally associated with easing fatigue, muscle discomfort, nerve discomfort, and sensitivity to cold.

The original bath starts with Kuzu Onsen water and adds Himalayan rock salt, bittern, and pesticide-free herbs. This slightly salty medicinal bath creates a warmer, more distinctive bathing experience, allowing you to compare it with the softer natural spring beside it.

A rock-lined open-air bath also uses Kuzu Onsen water. You can feel the mountain air while bathing outdoors, with greenery in the warmer months and snow possible during winter.

The shared baths operate from 15:00 to midnight and again from 5:00 to 10:00. Separate bathing areas are available for men and women. The bathing water does not follow a fully free-flowing system, and there is no sauna or reservable private bath.

Shampoo, conditioner, body soap, salt-based skin products, and hair dryers are available in the bathing areas. Bring the bath towel and face towel provided in your room.

Guests with Tattoos

You can use the shared indoor and open-air hot spring baths if you have tattoos.

For complete privacy, choose one of the top-floor rooms with a semi-open-air scenic bath. The in-room bath uses regular heated water rather than natural hot spring water.

Facilities

Inside Hotel Yume-no-yu, you can relax in the open lobby beside the piano, use the spacious dining room with sunken seating, or reserve the multipurpose room for karaoke, dining, or a small meeting. A children’s playroom gives younger family members space to spend time indoors, while free card games, Othello, UNO, and shogi are available for quieter evenings.

Free Wi-Fi is available in the rooms and shared areas. You can also use vending machines, an elevator, a smoking room, a ski-drying area, luggage storage, and delivery services. Free outdoor parking is available when you arrive by car.

Activities

Use Hotel Yume-no-yu as your base for the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. Travel to Ogizawa and continue towards Kurobe Dam, where mountain transport carries you deeper into the Northern Alps. During spring, the route is known for its towering snow walls, while summer and autumn bring hiking and changing alpine scenery.

Closer to Omachi, explore Lake Kizaki, Lake Nakatsuna, and Lake Aoki. Depending on the season, you can walk beside the water, cycle, fish, canoe, or enjoy stand-up paddleboarding.

You can also travel towards Hakuba for mountain walks and winter sports or head south to Azumino for wasabi fields, countryside scenery, and the Azumino Chihiro Art Museum.

Back inside, spend the evening playing one of the complimentary games or enjoy the informal live performance held in the lobby before another hot spring bath.

Additional Features

Check-in begins at 15:00, and check-out is by 10:00. All accommodation rooms are non-smoking, while a designated smoking room is available inside the building.

Free parking is available on the grounds. Advance-reservation pickup is available between the Omachi Onsen-kyo bus stop and Hotel Yume-no-yu.

Winter snow and ice can affect roads around Omachi, the Alpine Route entrance, and Hakuba. Winter tyres or suitable chains are necessary when you arrive by car during the colder months.
