Overview
Stay at AZUMINO KOGEN RESORT, the current name of the former Hotel Ambient Azumino and Ambient Azumino Cottage. The resort reopened under its new name on April 1, 2026, following renovations to selected rooms, the hot spring facilities, reception area, shop, and indoor leisure spaces.
Set high in the forests of Hotaka at the foot of the Northern Alps, the resort gives you mountain views, fresh highland air, natural hot spring water, and easy access to Azumino’s countryside. You can choose the convenience of a hotel room or the privacy of a self-contained cottage surrounded by trees.
Spend your day exploring wasabi fields, art museums, shrines, parks, and mountain scenery before returning for a buffet dinner, a sauna session, and a soak in the open-air or semi-open-air bath.
Accommodation
The hotel building includes Western rooms, Japanese rooms, Japanese-Western rooms, and a spacious two-level maisonette. All hotel-building rooms are non-smoking, and many include a living area or kitchenette that suits a longer stay.
The Standard Twin Room offers 34 square metres of space with two beds and a compact kitchenette, although the exact kitchen setup may differ between rooms. The Deluxe Twin Room measures 55 square metres and separates the bedroom from the living area, giving you more room to relax. A counter-style kitchen adds flexibility when you want to prepare a drink or simple food in your room.
The Japanese Room measures 55 square metres and includes a six-tatami area with futon bedding and a daybed. It gives you the feel of a Japanese room while keeping the spacious layout of a resort hotel.
The Standard Japanese-Western Rooms measure 61 square metres. You can sleep in a twin bedroom and relax in a six-tatami room and separate living area. Some include a counter kitchen, while others use the extra space for a larger lounge. Futon bedding in the tatami area is self-service.
The Deluxe Japanese-Western Room offers 67 square metres with twin beds, a six-tatami room, a living area, and a counter-style kitchen. For even more space, the renovated Maisonette Room extends across two floors and measures 101 square metres. It includes two twin sleeping areas upstairs and a living space downstairs.
For a more private stay, choose one of the cottages in the surrounding forest. Cottage layouts range from two- and three-bedroom units to large four- to six-bedroom buildings. Each cottage includes a kitchen and its own natural hot spring bath.
Selected cottages add a private open-air hot spring bath, terrace, fireplace, or wood-burning stove. Terrace barbecue grills are available with certain cottage types from May to October, while fireplaces and wood-burning stoves operate in selected cottages during the colder months.
Common room features include a refrigerator, kettle, television, hair dryer, towels, sleepwear, and toiletries. Free Wi-Fi is available during your stay.
Dining
Dinner is served as a buffet featuring Japanese, Western, and Chinese dishes alongside flavours from Shinshu. You can choose from more than 50 dishes on the main buffet plans, with seasonal ingredients and local recipes changing throughout the year.
The live kitchen brings part of the cooking into the dining room, allowing you to enjoy freshly prepared dishes while they are still hot. Dinner selections may include grilled meat, local vegetables, river fish prepared in an irori-inspired style, noodles, rice dishes, salads, desserts, and regional specialities.
Selected drinks, including wine, are included with the main dinner buffet. This lets you try different pairings as you move between grilled dishes, vegetables, seafood, and dessert.
Breakfast features around 30 Japanese and Western choices. The selection includes a salad bar and familiar morning dishes, while the live kitchen prepares pancakes, waffles, grilled rice balls, and grilled rice balls served with tea or broth.
Large restaurant windows open the dining experience towards the Northern Alps and the surrounding highland scenery.
Onsen and Wellness
The shared hot spring facilities include two different bathing areas: one built around the warmth and fragrance of cypress wood and another finished in stone. The two sides switch between men and women at set times, giving you the chance to experience both designs.
Each side includes a large indoor hot spring bath and either an open-air or semi-open-air bath. The semi-open-air bath was added during the April 2026 renovation, allowing you to feel the cool mountain air while remaining partly sheltered.
The natural water is drawn from the Nakabusa Gorge area and combines the Ariake Kosei Onsen source with the source used by Ariakeso. It is classified as an alkaline simple hot spring. The clear water has a smooth feel and may help ease muscle tiredness, joint discomfort, sensitivity to cold, and general fatigue.
One bathing area includes a dry sauna, while the other includes a steam sauna. The dry sauna and outdoor relaxation terrace were added during the 2026 renovation, giving you a place to cool down in the highland air after warming your body.
The shared baths are normally available from 15:00 to midnight and from 5:00 to 10:00. The baths close during the day for cleaning and maintenance.
A new after-bath lounge on the basement level remains open 24 hours a day, giving you a comfortable place to rest after your soak.
Guests with Tattoos
You cannot use the shared indoor baths, open-air bath, semi-open-air bath, or saunas if you have tattoos or body paint.
For private hot spring bathing, choose a cottage with its own natural hot spring bath. Selected cottage types also include a private open-air hot spring bath.
Facilities
The reception area and shop were renewed in April 2026. The shop carries souvenirs, daily essentials, drinks, snacks, and instant food, making it useful when you stay for several nights or choose a self-catering cottage.
A new indoor play area includes table tennis, darts, and smartball, while a separate amusement corner gives you another option during wet or snowy weather. Three karaoke rooms are also available for time with family or friends.
The basement laundry area includes five washing machines and five dryers and remains open 24 hours a day. You can also use the 24-hour after-bath lounge, free Wi-Fi, elevators, vending facilities, luggage storage, and complimentary on-site parking.
A free shuttle connects the resort with JR Hotaka Station, with the journey taking around 20 minutes. The resort is also around 25 minutes by car from the Azumino Interchange.
Activities
Visit Alps Azumino National Government Park to walk through flower gardens, woodland areas, and open countryside at the foot of the Northern Alps. Seasonal displays change throughout the year, making the park rewarding in spring, summer, and autumn.
At Daio Wasabi Farm, you can walk beside clear spring-fed waterways and see the fields that support Azumino’s well-known wasabi production. Nearby Hotaka Shrine introduces you to a place of worship closely connected with the history and mountain culture of the region.
For art, visit the Azumino Chihiro Art Museum to see work by picture-book illustrator Chihiro Iwasaki, or explore the brick church-like building and sculpture collection at the Rokuzan Art Museum.
The Misato Skyline Observatory gives you a wider view across Azumino and the Matsumoto Plain from an elevation of around 1,400 metres. You can also enjoy hiking, countryside drives, cycling, winter scenery, and day trips towards Matsumoto or the Northern Alps.
Back at the resort, spend time in the hot spring, play table tennis or darts, enjoy karaoke, or relax in your room while watching the light change across the mountains.

Check-in begins at 15:00, and check-out is by 11:00. Free parking and a complimentary shuttle from JR Hotaka Station make the resort accessible by both car and train.
