Overview
KAMENOI HOTEL OKUNIKKO YUMOTO brings together lake scenery, mountain air, regional dining, and the milky waters of Nikko Yumoto Onsen. Set beside Lake Yunoko in the Oku-Nikko highlands, the hotel places you close to waterfalls, forest trails, wetlands, and some of Nikko’s most impressive seasonal landscapes.
The peaceful location feels far removed from the city, yet many of Oku-Nikko’s highlights are within a short walk or drive. Lake Yunoko is about 5 minutes away on foot, Nikko Yumoto Visitor Center is also around 5 minutes away, and Yudaki Falls can be reached in about 30 minutes on foot or 3 minutes by car.
After a day outdoors, you can return for a buffet filled with Tochigi flavors, soak in the sulfur-rich indoor and open-air baths, and relax in a room overlooking the surrounding highland scenery.
Accommodation
Room choices include Western-style twin and triple rooms, Japanese rooms with futons, Japanese rooms with mattress beds, and an accessible Japanese room.
Every category measures approximately 29㎡, giving you enough space to relax after hiking, sightseeing, or travelling through Nikko. The twin room accommodates two people, while the triple room accommodates three. Both sit on the highest floor and offer wide seasonal views.
The 10-tatami Japanese Room with two mattress beds combines tatami flooring with the ease of Western-style sleeping. It accommodates up to four people, with two futons added when four people share the room.
For a more traditional experience, the 10-tatami Japanese Room accommodates up to four people and includes a private unit bath. The accessible Japanese Room also has a private bath and a larger bathroom and toilet area, making it easier to move around with a wheelchair.
All rooms are non-smoking and include free Wi-Fi, a television, refrigerator, electric kettle, hairdryer, safe, washlet toilet, towels, slippers, green tea, and toiletries. Yukata are available in the first-floor lobby, where you can choose your preferred design.
Dining
Breakfast and dinner are served as Japanese, Western, and Chinese buffets, allowing you to choose dishes according to your appetite.
Dinner highlights ingredients and food traditions from Tochigi. The selection may include Nikko yuba sashimi, kate soba with local chives, and dishes prepared with seasonal vegetables. At the live kitchen, you can enjoy freshly cooked choices such as salt-grilled yamame trout and Tochigi pork steak.
Seasonal dishes change throughout the year, adding local character to each visit. Summer menus, for example, draw inspiration from regional favorites found across Tochigi.
Breakfast combines Japanese and Western choices, giving you a satisfying start before a morning walk around Lake Yunoko or a full day of sightseeing.
Breakfast is served from 7:00 to 9:30, with final entry at 9:00. Dinner runs from 17:30 to 21:00, with final entry at 19:30. Opening times may change according to occupancy.
Later in the evening, you can enjoy one complimentary bowl of Kamenoi Hotel’s night-time tantan noodles. Red, black, and white styles rotate each month, adding a warming finish to the day.
Onsen and wellness
The hotel’s milky hot spring is one of the main reasons to visit. Nikko Yumoto Onsen is said to date back to the Nara period and was among the first hot spring areas in Japan to receive National Hot Spring Health Resort status.
The water begins clear at the source, then changes to milky white or pale emerald as it meets the air. Its distinctive sulfur scent and smooth texture create a classic mountain onsen experience.
Separate men’s and women’s bathing areas include a spacious indoor bath and an open-air bath. During the day, soft natural light reaches the water. At night, the outdoor bath offers a chance to soak beneath the highland sky.
The spring is classified as a sulfur-containing sodium-calcium sulfate, bicarbonate, and chloride hot spring. Traditional bathing indications include muscle fatigue, sensitivity to cold, and selected skin concerns.
Bathing hours are from 15:00 to midnight and from 5:00 to 9:00.
Guests with tattoos
You can use the public baths when your tattoos are completely covered with the designated 10 cm by 14 cm skin-covering sheet. The sheets are available from the hotel shop.
Tattoos that cannot be fully covered are not accepted in the shared bathing areas. The hotel does not offer a private or reservable bath.
Facilities
The tatami rest area is open 24 hours and gives you a comfortable place to cool down after the onsen. Two complimentary massage chairs are also available here. From 14:00 to 21:00, the free drink corner serves coffee, tea, green tea, oolong tea, strawberry milk, and other hot and cold drinks.
For a light treat, you can grill your own mitarashi dango over a small charcoal stove in the lobby. The experience takes around 10 minutes and is available from 7:00 to 22:00.
You can also enjoy table tennis, browse the shop for Tochigi sweets and Nikko tamari pickles, or pick up drinks, bread, noodles, snacks, and ice cream from the 24-hour vending machines.
Three coin-operated laundry machines support longer stays. Bicycle rental is available from 7:00 until sunset, with mountain bikes, fat bikes, city bicycles, and children’s bicycles offered when weather and road conditions allow.
Families can also enjoy the complimentary drawing attraction in the lobby, where children create their own vehicle and watch it race across a digital screen.
Activities
Lake Yunoko offers one of the easiest outdoor experiences from the hotel. A walking path follows the approximately 3-kilometre shoreline and takes around one hour to complete. Forest, lake, and mountain views change with the seasons, from spring greenery to autumn color and winter snow.
