Overview
Genjikoh gives you a ryokan stay shaped by scent, sea, and classical Japanese beauty. You stay on the Yamami Coast in Minamichita Onsenkyo, looking out over Ise Bay from a ryokan inspired by incense culture and The Tale of Genji. From the moment you enter, fragrance becomes part of the experience. Incense moves gently through the building, helping you shift out of daily life and into a slower rhythm.
This is a ryokan for the senses. You see the sea from every room, choose incense for your own space, soak in natural hot spring water above Ise Bay, and enjoy seasonal food from the Chita Peninsula. Morning light, passing boats, sunset colors, and the sound of the waves all become part of your stay.
Accommodation
Every room at Genjikoh faces Ise Bay, so the sea stays with you throughout the day. You may wake to soft morning light over the water, watch ships pass in the distance, or sit quietly as the sky changes color toward evening. Each room also lets you choose one incense fragrance from five kinds, giving your space a personal scent for the night.
Room types include Designer Rooms, rooms with open-air baths, Japanese-Western rooms, barrier-free rooms, reclining rooms, general Japanese-style rooms, and connecting rooms. The Designer Rooms are Japanese-style rooms created to express the world of The Tale of Genji, with a refined look shaped by classical beauty. Rooms with open-air baths let you enjoy your own private bath while looking toward Ise Bay, making them a good choice when you want more quiet time in your room.
Japanese-Western rooms combine the ease of beds with the feeling of a ryokan stay, while the general Japanese-style rooms give you a more traditional tatami experience. The barrier-free rooms include features such as a reclining bed, slope, reinforced handrails, and a wider room entrance. Reclining rooms also include a reclining bed in a Japanese-style setting. Connecting rooms suit you when you want to stay close together as a group while still keeping separate room space.
Room amenities include shampoo, conditioner, body soap, bar soap, towels, bath towels, body towel or sponge, toothbrush set, comb, brush, shower cap, razor, cotton swabs, yukata, refrigerator, electric kettle, tea set, safety box, telephone, hair dryer, heated toilet seat with bidet, TV, satellite TV, and free Wi-Fi. Bath towels are kept in your room, so please bring one with you when you visit the hot spring baths.
Dining
Dining at Genjikoh focuses on the sea and land of Minamichita. Dinner brings together fresh fish and shellfish from Ise Bay, Ise ebi spiny lobster, and Chita Beef, a wagyu brand raised on the Chita Peninsula. The cuisine feels seasonal and carefully arranged, with tableware and presentation chosen to match each dish.
The kitchen prepares Japanese cuisine that appeals to sight, scent, and taste. Seafood may appear as sashimi or cooked dishes, while Chita Beef adds richness and depth to the meal. One of Genjikoh’s signature celebratory dishes is sea bream shiogama-yaki, where sea bream is covered in coarse salt and baked whole, then opened with a mallet in a style connected to good fortune. This dish requires advance reservation for groups.
Breakfast is a Japanese set meal based on local eating traditions. It gives you a gentle, satisfying start before another bath, a walk by the coast, or a day exploring Minamichita.
Meals are generally served in the restaurant or banquet hall. Private and semi-private dining spaces are available, though requests may depend on the day. Some seating areas use partitions, lowered kotatsu-style seating, or chair tables, so you can enjoy the meal in comfort.
Onsen and Wellness
The hot spring baths are one of Genjikoh’s strongest pleasures. The rooftop open-air baths sit on the 10th floor, giving you a wide view over Ise Bay and the Minamichita coastline. The feeling is open and airy, as if you are soaking between sea and sky.
The women’s rooftop bath area is called Fushimi-no-Yu and includes an open-air rock bath, a round cypress open-air bath, and a sauna. The men’s rooftop bath area is called Ise-no-Yu and includes a square cypress open-air bath, jar bath, lie-down bath, and sauna. The jar bath lets you enjoy your own tub, while the lie-down bath supports your body in a floating position.
Indoor baths are also available, with the women’s indoor bath on the 8th floor and the men’s indoor bath on the 9th floor. These are useful when the wind feels strong on the rooftop, especially during cooler weather.
The hot spring is Choju-no-Yu, a natural sodium-calcium chloride saline spring. The water is associated with relief from arthritis, neuralgia, and poor circulation. Bathing hours are from 3:00 PM to midnight and from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM, with day-use bathing during lunchtime hours.
After bathing, you can cool down with sherbet in the rest area. In the morning, you can also sample Mizkan vinegar drinks during the breakfast-time service.

Facilities
Genjikoh’s shared spaces continue the ryokan’s fragrance and Tale of Genji theme. The lobby brings you into the world of Genji with incense and classic Japanese atmosphere, while Lounge Wakamurasaki offers a relaxed place to sit after arrival. If you arrive by the welcome service time, you can enjoy matcha and sweets at check-in.
The ryokan also has Genjikoh Total Spa for treatments and massage, a souvenir shop called Matsukaze with incense, incense burners, sachets, and Minamichita products, and banquet halls for meals, meetings, and celebrations. The Grand Hall can support larger gatherings, while the Middle Hall works for smaller groups.
Free services add small pleasures to the stay. You can choose incense for your room, select a designer yukata, enjoy sherbet after the hot spring, and sample vinegar drinks in the morning. Daily lobby experiences may include monko, an incense game where you “listen” to fragrance and try to identify the scent, as well as uchikake kimono try-on for commemorative photos when available.
Free parking is available, and a reservation-only shuttle runs from Meitetsu Kowa Station for overnight stays.
Activities
Inside the ryokan, you can enjoy incense selection, monko lessons, uchikake try-on, hot spring bathing, spa treatments, and quiet time overlooking Ise Bay. The experience does not need to feel busy. A simple stay of bathing, dining, choosing incense, and watching the sea is already enough.
Outside the ryokan, Minamichita gives you coastal scenery, beaches, fishing ports, island trips, seafood spots, and relaxed drives around the Chita Peninsula. You can explore during the day, then return for sunset, dinner, and a rooftop bath above the sea.
Genjikoh also works well for special occasions. The ryokan can help arrange celebrations such as birthdays, wedding anniversaries, longevity celebrations, commemorative fireworks, and champagne towers, depending on the plan and request.
