Overview
Boso Shirahama Umisato Hotel sits right on Shirahama Beach on the southern tip of the Boso Peninsula, in Minamiboso City, Chiba Prefecture. The Pacific Ocean is directly in front of the hotel, and from arrival to departure it stays that way: you see it from your room, hear it through your window, and walk to the beach in about 30 seconds from the entrance. The hotel describes its appeal as “the warmth of the sea and the countryside of old,” a phrase that captures the unhurried, old-fashioned seaside charm that makes this stretch of the Boso coast feel genuinely removed from city life.
From JR Chikura Station, a hotel shuttle bus runs to the property in about 15 minutes. By car from the Tomiura Interchange it takes approximately 40 minutes.
Accommodation
Every room in the hotel faces the ocean, so the Pacific is always in your sightline. The room types include compact Japanese-style rooms at 13 square metres and slightly larger Japanese-style rooms at 17 square metres, all with ocean views and private balconies. Each room has air conditioning, a flat-screen TV, a refrigerator, free Wi-Fi, a private bathroom, and free toiletries. The whole building is non-smoking.
Check-in is from 3:00 PM, with a last check-in time of 9:00 PM. Check-out is by 10:00 AM. If you want dinner on the night of arrival, you need to check in by 6:00 PM.
Dining
The restaurant sits on the second floor with an ocean view, and the signature dining experience here is the kaisen hamayaki buffet, where fresh seafood is grilled right at your table. The hotel sources its ingredients from the nearby waters of Minamiboso and from the sea and mountains of the Boso Peninsula, and the buffet format lets you grill at your own pace, making it as casual or as generous as you like.
Breakfast starts at 7:30 AM and is served as a Japanese and Western buffet or a set menu. The spread includes freshly grilled dried fish cooked to order at your seat while it is still hot, local eggs from nearby poultry farmers, and Boso-style side dishes that reflect the regional food culture. A drink bar is included with breakfast. The soft drinks are freely available throughout the meal.
One practical note: there are no convenience stores or restaurants within walking distance of the hotel, so meals at the property are your main option for eating unless you have a car.
Onsen and Wellness
The hotel draws hot spring water from its own private source, Shirahama Motoyu Onsen. The spring type is a chloride spring, which is known for two particular qualities: it retains heat extremely well, making it highly effective for people who suffer from sensitivity to cold, and the salt content in the water prevents rapid sweat evaporation after bathing, giving the skin a long-lasting moisturising effect. The hotel notes it is especially good for summer sunburns and winter dry skin. Recognised benefits of this spring type include relief from neuralgia, muscle pain, joint pain, and fatigue recovery.
The large public bath is in the basement of the hotel. Bathing hours are 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM and 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM.
Guests with Tattoos
If you have tattoos, you may not be permitted to use the public bathing areas. Contact the hotel directly before your visit to confirm the current policy and plan your bathing accordingly.
Facilities
The second-floor restaurant with ocean views serves as the main gathering space, covering both breakfast and dinner. The hotel has an elevator, a minimarket on site for basic supplies, coin-operated laundry facilities, and free private parking. Bicycle rentals are available for guests who want to explore the coastline at their own pace. A shuttle service connects the hotel with the nearest train station. Wi-Fi is available in all guest rooms and in the lobby and restaurant, though not in the basement bath area.
Activities
The beach is 30 seconds from the front entrance on foot, which makes it as accessible as a beach gets. Swimming, walking the shoreline, watching sunrise over the Pacific, and relaxing on the sand are the daily rhythm here.
Cape Nojima, the southernmost point of the Boso Peninsula, is about 3 kilometres away and offers dramatic coastal scenery. The Nojimasaki Lighthouse Museum is in the same area. Takabe Shrine is about 10 kilometres from the hotel. Bicycle rental from the hotel gives you an easy way to reach these spots at your own pace along the coast road.
The surrounding area is part of what is known as the Boso Flower Line, with flower fields and coastal scenery that shift with the seasons.
