Overview

Gyokusui invites you deep into the leafy quiet of Okuzatagawa, where bamboo, garden paths, and drifting hot spring steam set the mood from the moment you arrive. With only 13 rooms, this ryokan feels intimate and carefully held, giving you space to step away from noise and sink into the softer side of Izu.

Here, your stay moves with the rhythm of nature. You can stroll through two gardens, listen to bamboo leaves in the wind, soak in source-flowing hot spring water, and enjoy meals shaped by the mountains and sea of Izu. It feels quiet, graceful, and just a little hidden away from the everyday.

Accommodation

Your room brings together Japanese style, natural textures, and the deep pleasure of having hot spring water close at hand. Every room at Gyokusui includes a source-flowing bath, so you can enjoy your own private soak without leaving your space.

You can choose from special detached rooms, garden-view Japanese-Western rooms, rooms with open-air baths, rooms with semi-open-air baths, and rooms with footbaths and indoor hot spring baths. Some rooms look toward the Japanese garden, some face the bamboo grove, and some give you both.

For a more indulgent stay, choose a detached room with two source-flowing baths, such as a hinoki open-air bath and an Izu-stone bath. Other rooms include wide windows, terraces, private gardens, footbaths, or bed-style layouts, giving you many ways to relax without losing the feeling of a traditional ryokan.

Dining

Dining at Gyokusui brings the flavors of Izu to your table with color, care, and a sense of occasion. Dinner follows a seasonal Japanese course style, with each dish showing the richness of the sea, the mountains, and the moment you are visiting.

Depending on your plan, you may enjoy dishes such as kinmedai shabu-shabu, domestic beef sirloin cooked on lava stone, beef fillet steak, abalone, kinmedai simmered in Gyokusui’s house sauce, or Izu-style kinmedai sushi. The meal feels generous, elegant, and full of little surprises.

You can also add special dishes such as whole simmered kinmedai, grilled abalone, or spiny lobster. One playful highlight is the ryokan’s “Funto-mori” presentation, where rising steam brings a touch of hot spring drama to the meal.

Onsen and Wellness

Hot springs sit at the heart of your stay. Gyokusui uses its own source, with water managed by skilled yumori hot spring keepers so the temperature feels just right. All baths use source-flowing water, giving you the full pleasure of Atagawa’s natural spring.

You can soak in the large indoor baths made with Izu blue stone, where wide windows bring in views of the surrounding satoyama landscape. You can also reserve the private open-air bath, Obitoke, set in a bamboo grove where the sound of leaves and the night sky add to the feeling of escape.

The private open-air bath can be used for 40 minutes per room, with reservations made at check-in.

If you want deeper rest, you can add esthetic treatments that use Gyokusui’s hot spring knowledge, original Yumoribito skincare, and Izu kuromoji aromatherapy.

Guests with Tattoos

If you have tattoos, the easiest way to enjoy the onsen is through your in-room hot spring bath or the private open-air bath. Since every room includes a source-flowing bath, you can soak quietly in your own space without using the shared bathing areas.

For shared public baths, check with the ryokan before your stay so you know the current policy.

Nearby ideas include Mount Omuro, Jogasaki Coast, Izu Kogen, Lake Ippeki, Kinomiya Shrine, and coastal viewpoints such as Nishikigaura. You can ride a lift up Mount Omuro, walk along dramatic seaside cliffs, browse Izu Kogen, or take a gentle lakeside stroll before returning to the baths.
