Overview
Takitakan welcomes you to the quiet countryside of Iwaki, Fukushima, where birdsong, stars, wind, and slow hours become part of your stay. It is not a place built around convenience. The nearest shop is about 7 km away, and the nearest supermarket is about 13 km away. That distance is part of the charm: you come here to step away from noise and settle into a softer, more grounded rhythm.
This small minshuku feels like returning to a countryside home. You can spend your time surrounded by nature, warm hospitality, simple rooms, home-cooked meals, and smooth alkaline mineral spring water. Three cats also live on the property, so take care if you have allergies.
Accommodation
You can choose between a private traditional cottage and a Japanese-style room in the main building. The cottage works beautifully if you want more space and privacy. It is a small one-story old house with three 6-tatami rooms, a private bathroom, a toilet, and an irori hearth at the center of the home. In winter, the hearth can be used with charcoal for warmth, giving the cottage a lovely old-Japan feeling. Cooking or dining over the irori is not available.
The cottage sleeps 2 to 5 people and includes a TV, refrigerator, air conditioner, tea and coffee set, hair dryer, and winter heating items such as a kotatsu and heater. There is no kitchen, but you may bring food and drinks into the cottage. If you order meals, you enjoy them in the main hall.
The main building offers an 8-tatami Japanese-style room on the second floor for 2 to 3 people. You stay with tatami underfoot, simple furnishings, and a peaceful view of nature. There is no elevator, and the resident cats live in the main building, so this room is best if stairs and cats are not a concern for you.
Dining
Meals at Takitakan feel warm, handmade, and close to the land. You can enjoy home-cooked dishes made with vegetables grown in the garden using organic fertilizer, along with safe local ingredients from Iwaki and Fukushima. The food is gentle, thoughtful, and made with care rather than fuss.
Dinner begins around 6:00 PM and brings you a creative Japanese-style meal built around seasonal ingredients. If you book dinner, plan to check in by around 6:00 PM so you can enjoy the meal without rushing.
Breakfast begins around 8:00 AM and gives you a traditional Japanese start to the day. If you need to leave early, contact the property in advance. Vegetarian, vegan, allergy, and dietary requests may be possible when shared at least three days before arrival, though severe allergies cannot be accommodated because there is no dedicated allergy kitchen.
Onsen and Wellness
The bath at Takitakan uses 100% natural mineral spring water, gently heated for each use. The alkaline water has a smooth, silky feel on the skin, making bath time one of the simple pleasures of your stay.
If you stay in the main building, you use the large bath as a private family-style bath by reserved time slot. The bath is not separated by gender, and your time is explained at check-in. Bathing is available in the evening only, so morning bathing and repeated baths are not available.
If you stay in the private cottage, you prepare your own bath using the same mineral spring water. This gives you more freedom and privacy, while still keeping the experience simple and close to nature.
Guests with Tattoos
Takitakan warmly welcomes you if you have tattoos. You can relax and enjoy the bath without worry, especially because bathing is arranged privately by room or cottage.
