Overview

Step into a place where time seems to stand still. At Hoshi Onsen Chojukan, you’ll experience more than a stay—you’ll live a piece of history. Tucked deep in the mountains of Gunma Prefecture, this registered tangible cultural property welcomes you with traditional Japanese architecture, natural hot springs, and warm hospitality that honors centuries of tradition. Here, everything encourages you to slow down and reconnect—with nature, yourself, and the stories of the past.

Accommodation

Choose from four distinct types of rooms, each with its own charm. If you’re looking for authenticity, stay in the original Meiji-era building. These rooms have no private toilets and vary in size, but carry the atmosphere of a bygone era—poets and artists once stayed here. For more comfort and privacy, select a room in the Showa-era annex, built along the Hoshi River, where every room comes with a toilet.

Looking for even more space? Try Kaoruyamaso or Horyuden, newer wooden buildings designed for a slightly more luxurious stay. Wherever you sleep, expect warm wood interiors, traditional tatami flooring, and calming views of the mountains or river.

Dining

Enjoy seasonal meals crafted with care using fresh ingredients from the local region. The chefs at Chojukan prepare traditional kaiseki-style dishes that change with the seasons, featuring local specialties from Gunma. Every dish is made to reflect the richness of the region, with simple, nourishing flavors that pair perfectly with the calm of the onsen setting.

If you’re visiting near your 25th wedding anniversary, mention it when booking—Chojukan has a little surprise for you.

Onsen and Wellness

Hoshi Onsen is famous for its naturally gushing spring, one of the rare few that still flows directly from the ground. There’s no need for pumps or artificial heating—the mineral-rich waters rise through the floor of the historic bath, entering the tub with all their natural healing power intact.

Soak in Hoshino-yu, the main bath known for its rustic wooden beams and nostalgic atmosphere. This bath alone is worth the journey. You can also relax in other baths like Tamakinoyu or private family baths. The water helps ease nerve pain, muscle fatigue, and skin problems. Locals even say it can heal rashes or burns in just a couple of days.

Guests with Tattoos

There is no specific mention of restrictions regarding tattoos, but it’s best to inquire directly before your visit.

Here, the activity is slowing down. Spend time by the irori hearth, listening to the crackling wood and chatting with others. The mountains invite quiet walks and thoughtful moments.
