Overview
Shohakutei Azumaso has welcomed travelers to the Tendo Hot Spring area for more than a century. This ryokan carries forward a tradition of heartfelt hospitality and seasonal beauty, passed down from one generation to the next. As you arrive, you step into a space where Japanese gardens, tatami rooms, and the gentle flow of onsen water invite you to relax.
The ryokan sits in the heart of Yamagata, surrounded by natural charm and cultural history. You can enjoy seasonal ingredients, warm local sake, and peaceful views of the gardens from your room. Whether you’re here for a single night or an extended stay, the team treats you like family.
Accommodation
Shohakutei Azumaso offers a range of rooms designed to match the season and your style. Choose from traditional tatami rooms, spacious suites with open-air baths, or cozy Western-style accommodations. Each space helps you unwind, whether you’re looking for quiet reflection or time with loved ones.
Rooms in the main building hold 2 to 7 people and feature garden views. The west wing includes 10 rooms that fit up to 4 people each. The annex, Kouin, features architecture in the sukiya style and includes rooms like Musou and Yoimachi, both equipped with indoor cypress baths and private open-air baths facing the gardens.
All rooms include baths, bidet toilets, washstands, free Wi-Fi, and a complete set of amenities. If you’re traveling with children, you can request baby items such as cribs, chairs, and infant bedding at no charge.
Dining
Azumaso celebrates the flavors of Yamagata with every meal. Your dining experience includes wild vegetables in spring, mushrooms in autumn, and fresh seafood year-round. Meals are served with local Yamagata sake and prepared with seasonal care by skilled chefs.
Breakfast features Tsuyahime rice and a lineup of comforting country dishes. The breakfast dining room also offers complimentary coffee and juice to help start your morning right. Breakfast is available from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m.
You can also choose a plan that serves dinner in your room, giving you the chance to dine in privacy with views of the garden.
Onsen and Wellness
Tendo Hot Spring is known for its soft water that soothes your skin and your spirit. At Azumaso, you can enjoy two public bathing areas: the Hyottoko bath for men and the Okame bath for women. Both include indoor and open-air baths, available from 1:00 p.m. until 10:00 a.m. the following day.
The water gently warms your body and eases away tension. After your bath, slip into a yukata and take a slow walk through the garden or rest in the lounge.
If you stay in one of the annex rooms like Musou or Yoimachi, you can enjoy your own private open-air bath at any time.
Guests with Tattoos
There are no published policies specific to tattoos. It is best to contact the ryokan in advance if you have concerns about access to the public baths.
