Overview

Step into Hanamurasaki, a ryokan that blends tradition with innovation in the heart of Yamanaka Onsen. For over a century, this retreat has welcomed travelers seeking rest in the healing waters of the mountains. Every part of your stay here connects you with nature, culture, and beauty—from the flowing river valley just outside your window to the warm, refined hospitality inside.

The name “Hanamurasaki” comes from the Japanese phrase sanshi suimei, which speaks of mountains touched by purple clouds and rivers flowing with light. This poetic expression shapes the entire experience. You’ll stay in a place where time slows down, where tea and art spark conversation, and where every meal celebrates Ishikawa’s changing seasons.

Accommodation

All rooms at Hanamurasaki face the stunning Kakusenkei Gorge. You can wake up to the same natural views that once inspired the poet Matsuo Basho. Choose from suites with open-air baths, private saunas, and works of art made in collaboration with local artists.

Stay in an Art Suite and soak in a spacious bath while surrounded by original creations. Book the Modern Suite for a tranquil space with low lighting, lacquer furnishings, and clean architectural lines. If you’re traveling with friends or family, the Universal Suite gives you generous space with a bath and sauna right in your room. You can also pick a traditional Japanese room with an extra adjoining space for added comfort and privacy.

No matter which room you choose, you’ll relax in an environment shaped by the elegance of Japanese design.

Dining

Each meal at Hanamurasaki is a tribute to Ishikawa’s ingredients and culinary tradition. You won’t receive a fixed menu. Instead, you’ll choose your own multi-course kaiseki from a seasonal à la carte menu. This freedom to select each dish lets you enjoy the meal in your own style.

If you prefer a guided experience, order the Omakase Kaiseki, crafted by the head chef using the finest ingredients available that day. Every dish—whether it’s simmered anago with yam or young octopus with bamboo shoots—tells a story of the season.

During the winter months, indulge in the Snow Crab Kaiseki, available from early November to late March. You’ll enjoy fresh Kanō-gani crab caught in local waters, served in a variety of styles.

Dietary restrictions? Let the ryokan know ahead of time, and they’ll adjust the menu so you can enjoy your meal with peace of mind.

Onsen and Wellness

Relax in the open-air bath at the top of the ryokan or visit the indoor bath beside the gorge. The hot spring at Hanamurasaki has been flowing for over 1,300 years, ever since the monk Gyoki followed a purple cloud to the source. You’ll soak in pure, healing water while surrounded by towering trees and the sound of the river below.

Several rooms come with their own bath and sauna. These private spaces let you experience the full benefits of Yamanaka’s spring water in total comfort.
