Gotemba Onsen refers to the hot spring area around Gotemba, a city in eastern Shizuoka Prefecture known for its position on the southeastern side of Mount Fuji. Many baths and inns in the area make the most of that setting, and on a clear day the mountain is a constant presence rather than a distant backdrop. The appeal here is less about a single old hot spring town than about soaking in a landscape shaped by wide skies, open views, and the foothills of Fuji.
Because Gotemba is also a convenient base for exploring the Fuji area, its onsen are often combined with day trips to nearby lakes, highlands, and mountain sights. Some visitors come simply to unwind after time spent outdoors, while others stop in on the way between Tokyo and the wider Mount Fuji region. Either way, Gotemba Onsen offers a quieter, more spacious kind of hot spring experience, with the mountain scenery doing much of the work.
