Chuzenji Onsen

Chuzenji Onsen sits beside Lake Chuzenji in the mountains above central Nikko, where the atmosphere feels cooler, quieter, and more spacious than the shrine area below. It is best known as a base for exploring Oku-Nikko, with the lake, Kegon Falls, and forested slopes all close at hand, and the changing seasons shaping the mood of the place from fresh green summers to vivid autumn color.

The onsen area is compact and easy to take in at a relaxed pace, with inns, small hotels, and lakeside views giving it the feel of a long-established mountain retreat rather than a busy resort town. Many travelers come here as much for the setting as for the baths themselves, staying overnight to enjoy the quiet after day-trippers leave and to spend more time walking the shore, visiting nearby viewpoints, or heading deeper into Oku-Nikko.
