Overview
Chuzenji Kanaya Hotel brings classic resort character to the forests beside Lake Chuzenji in Nikko National Park. Designed in the style of a mountain lodge, the hotel combines warm timber interiors, wide views through mizunara oak trees, traditional Kanaya Hotel dining, and natural hot spring bathing in a separate bathhouse.
The setting encourages a slower pace. You can begin the morning with fresh mountain air, spend the day exploring waterfalls and lakeside scenery, then return for French cuisine and a source-fed sulfur bath surrounded by trees.
This is an ideal choice when you want nature without giving up polished service. The hotel feels removed from the city, yet a complimentary shuttle and public bus connections make the journey from central Nikko straightforward.
Accommodation
Chuzenji Kanaya Hotel offers 57 Western-style rooms, ranging from comfortable twin rooms to an expansive Royal Suite. Warm wood tones and lodge-inspired details create a welcoming place to return to after a day outdoors.
The Standard Twin Rooms measure between 28㎡ and 30㎡ and form the largest room category. The 33㎡ Deluxe Twin Rooms provide a little more space, with selected rooms offering a Hollywood-style bed arrangement.
Junior Suites range from 45㎡ to 60㎡, making them well suited to longer stays or special occasions. Selected Junior Suites can connect with an adjoining room when you travel with family or friends.
The Royal Suite is the hotel’s largest room at 114㎡. Located on the third floor, it includes a spacious balcony, a walk-in wardrobe, and enough room to settle in comfortably for an extended stay.
For solo travel or a compact couple’s stay, the 26㎡ Semi-Double Rooms include a double bed and the same practical in-room features as the larger categories.
Every room includes a private bathtub, washlet toilet, heating and air conditioning, refrigerator, television, humidifying air purifier, nightwear, towels, toiletries, skincare products, and a tea set.
Dining
Dining at Chuzenji Kanaya Hotel continues the culinary tradition associated with the Kanaya Hotel name. Meals are served in Dining Room Mizunara, where large windows look through the trees toward the natural surroundings of Oku-Nikko.
Dinner follows a Western course format with a strong French influence. Carefully prepared sauces, seasonal ingredients, and refined presentation create a meal that feels connected to the hotel’s long resort heritage.
Breakfast is served as an American breakfast rather than a buffet, allowing you to begin the day at an easy pace. Lunch and afternoon coffee service are also available in Mizunara.
Breakfast runs from 7:30 to 9:30, lunch and coffee service from 12:00 to 14:00, and dinner from 18:00 to 20:00. Hours may change with the season.
Coffee House Yukon sits about four minutes away on foot within the hotel grounds. It offers another relaxed setting for coffee and casual meals during the day.
Onsen and wellness
Soraburo is the hotel’s separate hot spring bathhouse, set among the trees a short walk from the main building. The experience changes with the seasons, from fresh spring greenery and autumn leaves to snow drifting around the outdoor bath.
The spring water travels approximately 12 kilometres from Oku-Nikko Yumoto Onsen. It is a sulfur spring with a distinctive mountain-onsen character.
Both the indoor and open-air baths use non-circulated, source-fed hot spring water. Because the source temperature is high, water is added to adjust the bathing temperature.
A sauna adds another way to unwind after hiking, sightseeing, or travelling through Nikko. Bathing hours are from 5:30 to 9:30 and from 13:00 to midnight, giving you time for an early soak, an afternoon visit, or a quiet bath before bed.
Guests with tattoos
Tattoos are not accepted in the shared hot spring bath or sauna facilities. Chuzenji Kanaya Hotel does not offer a private or reservable hot spring bath.
Facilities
The front lobby looks through the trees toward Lake Chuzenji and features a large fireplace that is lit during the colder months, usually from around November to April. The space creates an inviting place to read, meet before dinner, or relax after returning from the bathhouse.
Lounge Shakunage on the second floor is reserved for overnight stays and offers complimentary coffee and tea. The hotel also includes an art space with changing exhibitions and Gift Shop Owl, where you can find original hotel products, local items, and drinks.
Massage chairs are available for a fee along the passage leading to the hot spring building. Wi-Fi is available through most of the hotel, and the front desk can assist with luggage storage, taxi enquiries, parcel delivery, and local information.
Free outdoor parking is available for 50 cars without advance reservation. An EV charging point is also available through the required mobile application.
Activities
Lake Chuzenji and the surrounding Oku-Nikko area offer rewarding scenery throughout the year. You can walk near the lake, explore forest paths, or enjoy views shaped by Mount Nantai and the surrounding mountains.
Ryuzu Falls, Kegon Falls, and Senjogahara Marshland are among the best-known natural attractions within reach of the hotel. Spring brings fresh leaves, summer offers cooler temperatures than central Nikko, autumn fills the mountains with colour, and winter creates a quieter landscape of snow and ice.
The historic British and Italian Embassy Villa Memorial Parks offer another side of Lake Chuzenji’s story. Their lakeside locations and preserved architecture reflect the period when the area became a summer retreat for international diplomats.
Electric-assist bicycle rental is available seasonally through the hotel, giving you another way to explore the lake and surrounding roads. Rental periods range from one hour to a full six-hour day.
You can also travel down toward Nikko’s World Heritage shrines and temples before returning to the quieter atmosphere of the lake in the evening.
