Overview

Akazawa Onsen Ryokan sits in Shiobara Onsen, beside the Hoki River and away from the busier streets of the hot spring town. You arrive to a quiet riverside setting where the pace feels slower, the air feels fresher, and your stay naturally begins to revolve around bathing, eating, resting, and watching the seasons change outside.

The ryokan is known for its natural nuru-yu, or lukewarm hot spring water. The water comes from its own source and flows into the baths without added water or circulation, giving you a simple, honest onsen experience close to nature.

Accommodation

You can choose from Japanese-style 10-tatami rooms, renewed compact rooms, pet-friendly rooms, and a premium suite renewed in April 2024. Some rooms include baths, while others keep the stay closer to the classic ryokan style. The official site also lists non-smoking rooms with Wi-Fi, so you can settle in with the comfort you need while still enjoying the slower rhythm of an onsen inn.

If you travel with a pet, you can book selected pet-friendly rooms. The ryokan even offers a pet-first petite suite with a bath, designed so you and your pet can stay with more space and ease.

Dining

Your meals focus on local Tochigi ingredients and seasonal cooking. The kitchen prepares handmade dishes that bring together Japanese, Western, and Chinese influences, so dining feels warm, personal, and a little unexpected.

You can enjoy seasonal dishes, local sake, and plan-dependent courses such as Akazawa-style creative Chinese cuisine, vegan meals on selected days, and special meat or fish dishes. Breakfast is also designed to help you start the day well, with Chinese rice porridge available on request at no extra charge.

Onsen and Wellness

The hot spring is the heart of your stay. You can soak in indoor baths and open-air baths filled with 100% source-fed water. The indoor bath is a cypress bath, while the open-air rock bath lets you feel the mountain air as you bathe.

The water is intentionally lukewarm. The source is around 43°C, while the open-air bath may sit around 38°C and the indoor bath around 40°C. This makes Akazawa a good choice if you enjoy long, slow soaking rather than very hot bathing.

You can also book the private open-air bath for 50 minutes. It uses the same source-fed water with no added water, heating, or circulation, giving you a more personal way to enjoy the onsen.

Guests with tattoos

If you have tattoos, contact the ryokan before arrival so you can confirm the current rule. The private open-air bath may be the easiest option for those with tattoos.

Activities

You can slow down by the river, soak for longer in the lukewarm baths, and enjoy the quiet side of Shiobara Onsen. If you arrive by public transport, the ryokan can provide transfer support from Shiobara Onsen Bus Terminal when possible, with advance notice.

The official site also lists source-fed car camping, riverside stays for up to two vehicles per night, BBQ with your own grill, and workation support with free desk and chair rental during the trial period. These features make the ryokan a good match if you want a stay that feels flexible, outdoorsy, and less formal.

Additional features
