Overview

Stay at a ryokan with over 370 years of tradition, tucked away in a quiet mountain valley surrounded by greenery. At Tachibanaya, you slow down, breathe deeply, and soak in the calm of Yamagata’s famed Atsumi Onsen. This long-established retreat offers a space where you can unwind in natural hot springs, enjoy thoughtful hospitality, and connect with the rhythms of the seasons.

Accommodation

Tachibanaya offers several types of rooms, each with a character that blends classic Japanese style and comfort. Choose from rooms in the East, West, and South buildings or stay in the exclusive Kansuisou annex, where just ten rooms provide a more private and luxurious experience.

Each room includes tatami flooring, en-suite indoor baths, and thoughtful features like pit-type kotatsu and yukata. Depending on your room, you might also enjoy extras like drinks stocked in your fridge or tabi socks to wear during your stay. Whether you travel solo, as a couple, or with family, the rooms offer space to stretch out and relax.

Dining

At Tachibanaya, you eat with the seasons. Your meals include local specialties from Yamagata and the Shonai region—Yonezawa and Yamagata beef, Shonai pork, fresh seafood from the Japan Sea, and vegetables grown in the surrounding fields.

These ingredients come together in dishes that highlight the natural flavors of the land. The chefs prepare every course with care, using time-honored techniques that honor local traditions. Each meal is a celebration of color, texture, and taste that nourishes both body and spirit.

If you have special dietary needs, vegetarian meals are available. Just let the ryokan know when you make your reservation.

Onsen and Wellness

Tachibanaya’s baths invite you to slow down and immerse yourself in nature. The men’s stone open-air bath offers a rustic atmosphere, surrounded by natural rock formations. The women’s cypress bath wraps you in the aroma of wood while you soak in silky mineral-rich water.

Listen to the murmur of the nearby stream, watch goldfish swim in the pond, and let the hot spring water ease the tension from your body. You can also enjoy private baths if you prefer a more secluded experience.

The bathing areas provide all the essentials, including shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and other toiletries for men and women. The bath is open early in the morning and late into the night, so you can enjoy it at your own pace.

Guests with Tattoos

The ryokan does not state any restrictions for tattoos. If you’re unsure, you can book a room with a private bath or ask the staff in advance.

Facilities

Tachibanaya creates a space where you can truly rest. Step into the grand lobby, where a poem from the Manyoshu greets you. Relax in the Shiki Lounge and look out over the garden, where lamps at night reflect on the water, creating a dreamlike view.

You can explore the Japanese garden, visit the gift shop, or enjoy snacks and coffee in the lounge. Yukata are available for you to wear during your stay, adding to the traditional experience.

Wi-Fi is free throughout the building, and the ryokan can hold your luggage before check-in or after check-out. Staff at the front desk speak English, and English signs help you find your way.

Activities

Tachibanaya gives you easy access to many sightseeing spots. Take a walk through the sacred cedar-lined steps of Mt. Haguro or visit the Five-Story Pagoda. Head to Kamo Aquarium, famous for its jellyfish displays, or explore the Studio Sedic Shonai Open Set where films were made.

Cultural spots like Somaro, Chido Museum, and Zenpoji Temple offer a glimpse into the area’s rich history. If you enjoy nature, ride a boat along the Mogami River or stroll through the Neju-no-matsu Garden. You can also unwind by the sea at Marine Park Nezugaseki, a peaceful beach with shallow waters.
