The Bettei Senjyuan Ryokan is located in Gunma Prefecture, along the stream of Mount Tanigawa. What makes this ryokan special is that every room at Bettei Senjyuan has its own open-air bath fed by a natural hot spring.

The rooms at Bettei Senjyuan are designed to make you feel like you’ve entered your private sanctuary and embodies the concept of a calming Japanese resort. There are 18 rooms on site, each with stunning views of Mount Tanigawa.

Given that Bettei Senjyuan is a high end ryokan, you can expect that kaiseki dinners are exceptional. Every dish features seasonal ingredients and the meal itself is a work of art, a visual and gastronomic delight.

Accommodation

Each room at Bettei Senjyuan Ryokan offers a unique layout and luxurious experience. You can select your favorite suite from the following options:

  • Special Room with Open-air Bath (SP): Special room consisting of a 12.5-tatami mat Japanese room, an 8-tatami mat Japanese room, a tearoom, and a wide veranda​​. This room has an open air bath.
  • Japanese-style Room with Open-air Bath (S): A semi-special room with a spacious Japanese-style area, an adjacent room, and an open-air bath. It consists of a 12.5-tatami mat main room and an 8-tatami mat adjoining room​​.
  • A popular room with a relaxing Japanese-style area, an adjacent room, and an open-air bath is complemented by a spacious deck with sweeping views of Mount Tanigawa.
  • Japanese-style Room with Open-air Bath and Terrace (B): This room includes a 12.5-tatami mat Japanese-style area and an open-air bath, along with a terrace that overlooks the Tanigawa River.
  • Japanese-Western Style Room with Open-air Bath: A combination of a Japanese room and a spacious twin room, featuring an open-air bath. The large windows and open-air bath let in views of the surrounding nature​​.
  • Western-style Room (Twin) with Open-air Bath: A beautiful twin room with two double beds and a semi-open-air bath, designed for relaxation and comfort. The room also has a living space with a Japanese aesthetic​​.
  • Japanese-style Room (A) with Open-air Bath: A popular room with a spacious Japanese-style area, an adjoining room, and an open-air bath. The veranda and bath offer gorgeous views.
  • Japanese-style Room (B) with Open-air Bath: A Japanese-style room that comes with a bright and open bath. The veranda overlooks a calming garden​​.

Dining

Senjyuan Ryokan takes pride in cooking with seasonal and delicious ingredients. The kaiseki dinner has delicacies from the mountains, rivers and premium Gunma beef. The dinner is served in the private dining room.

The breakfast also focuses on seasonal local produce and you can expect rice as well as fresh vegetables.

Onsen & Wellness

Even though there are open air baths in every room, Senjyuan Ryokan still offers 5 public baths, including open air baths and indoor baths. Some of the onsen overlook the clear streams of Tanigawa.

  • Suzumushi no Yu: An open-air bath.
  • Ichino Kura: A large public bath with a high-temperature salt sauna.
  • Hotaru no Yu: Another open-air bath, offering views of the Tanigawa valley.
  • Sennokura: This large public bath has a low-temperature mist sauna.
  • Summer-only Walking Bath: Located next to the esthetic room, this bath has comfortable temperatures between 38°C to 41°C​​.

The ryokan’s own hot spring is a low-tonicity, weak alkaline spring with a pH value of 8.04.

Facilities

  • Bettei Senjyuan ryokan features a curved glass corridor that is fantastically lit up at night, ceilings in the dining area incorporating the Edo ink flow technique, and a curved glass corridor. The plaster and Kyoto earthen walls, special handmade Japanese paper at the entrance, and stainless-steel tatami mats.
  • Shop: If you’re looking for souvenirs, head to the shop for local crafts and snacks.
  • Sauna: Renovated in 2020, the dry sauna has walls made of binchotan charcoal, which is highly efficient in retaining heat.
  • Private Sauna: This sauna is designed for an intimate experience, blending with nature and offering a place for introspection and relaxation​​.
  • Garden Terrace: Open from 13:00 to 16:00, it features seasonal local fruits and vegetables​​.
  • Garden: A spacious garden that offers magnificent views of Mount Tanigawa, especially when the weather is clear​​.
  • Reading Room: Surrounded by trees, it’s a perfect place for reading or resting after exploring the surrounding area​​.
