Overview

Harumiya Ryokan is a small hot spring ryokan in Tsuchiyu Onsen, Fukushima City, set along the Arakawa River. Here, you can slow down with natural hot spring baths, private-use open-air baths, rooms with their own onsen baths, and handmade Japanese meals that highlight Fukushima ingredients. With only 10 rooms across 4 room types, this is a good choice when you want quiet time, local food, and repeated soaks without rushing.

Accommodation

Harumiya Ryokan has 10 rooms across 4 room types. The Akashiya Wing and the 1st floor of the Sakura Wing offer Japanese-Western rooms, while the 2nd and 3rd floors of the Sakura Wing offer Japanese-style rooms. Each room type includes its own hot spring bath, so you can enjoy Tsuchiyu Onsen water in private.

In the Akashiya Wing on the 2nd and 3rd floors, you can stay in a Japanese-Western room with a free-flowing open-air hot spring bath. The room layout includes a shower room, living area, dining space, and bedroom. Simmons semi-double beds, a massage chair, tatami floor heating, and wireless LAN help you settle in for a calm stay.

On the 1st floor of the Akashiya Wing, you can choose a room renewed in March 2022. Fukushima cedar is used for the pillars, fittings, and flooring, giving the room a warm wood feel. The room includes a free-flowing semi-open-air bath made with Mikage stone, Simmons beds, a massage chair, tatami floor heating, wireless LAN, and a ceiling-light projector.

On the 1st floor of the Sakura Wing, you can stay in a Japanese-Western room with a private garden and a free-flowing hinoki open-air bath. In winter, depending on the weather, you can enjoy a snow-view bath from your room. This room was also renewed in March 2022 with two Simmons beds, a massage chair, a ceiling-light projector and screen, a shower room, tatami floor heating, wireless LAN, and a sunken kotatsu.

On the 2nd and 3rd floors of the Sakura Wing, you can stay in a Japanese-style room with a free-flowing Mikage stone open-air bath. From the window, you can look out toward greenery and the clear stream while you spend time between your room and your bath. These rooms include a sunken kotatsu, tatami floor heating, wireless LAN, and a toilet with washing functions.

Room amenities include a TV, phone, refrigerator, safe, electric kettle, tea set, hair dryer, and individual air conditioning. You also have hand soap, body soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush set, razor, towels, shower cap, comb, brush, yukata, and slippers. Loan items include a humidifier, air purifier, DVD player, microwave, deodorizing spray, and selected mobile phone chargers, though some items have limited availability.

Dining

Harumiya Ryokan serves handmade Japanese meals using seasonal local ingredients. The food focuses on Fukushima flavors, with ingredients sent directly from local producers and dishes rooted in the area’s older food culture.

In spring, you may begin with an appetizer selection centered on mountain vegetables. The ryokan prepares around 7 to 9 small dishes for this seasonal starter, giving you a fresh taste of the short mountain vegetable season.

Instead of standard seafood sashimi, Harumiya Ryokan usually serves Aizu horse sashimi. This gives you a direct taste of Fukushima’s regional food culture and makes the meal feel closely tied to the local area.

For breakfast, you can enjoy a handmade Japanese breakfast prepared with local ingredients. The meal highlights mountain produce and older countryside food traditions, giving you a gentle start before another bath or your onward journey.

Onsen and Wellness

Harumiya Ryokan uses natural hot spring water from Tsuchiyu Onsen. The bath water is mostly clear and gentle on your skin, and the ryokan describes it as weakly alkaline. The source blend comes from 4 wells around 2 km from the hot spring town; 2 of those wells are sulfur springs, so you may notice a light sulfur scent or small mineral flakes in the water.

You can use 3 types of baths in the building: indoor baths, a streamside open-air bath, and a rooftop open-air bath. The ryokan has 2 private-use open-air baths and 2 indoor baths, and you can use them privately when they are free. No reservation is needed; you simply lock the door from the inside.

The 1st-floor streamside open-air bath is a large stone bath beside the Arakawa River. It is large enough for about 15 people, but you use it privately when available. The view changes by season, and the bath sits in the fresh air of Bandai-Asahi National Park.

The Sakura Wing rooftop open-air bath uses a Koyamaki, or Japanese umbrella pine, tub. From here, you can look toward the mountains around Tsuchiyu Onsen while you enjoy the scent of the wood and the open air.

Guests with Tattoos

If you have tattoos, you can still enjoy the onsen without concern. Because the baths are used privately, there are no restrictions.

Activities

Your stay here centers on private bathing, seasonal views, and Fukushima food. You can start with your in-room hot spring bath, move to the large streamside open-air bath, and then try the rooftop bath with mountain views. In spring, look for mountain vegetables at dinner; in winter, the Sakura Wing 1st-floor room may offer a snow-view bath when the weather allows.

The ryokan is also easy to reach for a quiet onsen escape. By car, it is about 15 minutes from the Fukushima-Nishi Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway. From JR Fukushima Station, it takes about 45 minutes by Fukushima Kotsu bus, or about 30 minutes by taxi or rental car.
