Overview

Step into a stay that’s built entirely around your own rhythm. At Hatagoya Jozankei Shoten, you can decide what to do on the spot—no itinerary needed. Whether you’re traveling alone, with a partner, or a group, this laid-back ryokan in Hokkaido’s Jozankei Onsen gives you full control of your experience. There’s no pressure, no strict routines—just a lot of freedom to enjoy things your way.

Accommodation

This ryokan offers rooms that combine retro charm with the comfort of thoughtful renovation. You’ll sleep in cozy spaces that retain the character of the original 47-year-old building. Rooms are minimalist—each comes with towels, indoor wear, and hand soap. Capsule-style rooms called “Hatago no Naka” include earplugs, headphones, and fans. It’s a casual environment designed to help you feel at ease, like a mountain hideout from your daily routine.

Dining

You won’t find formal meal courses here. Instead, you can head to the in-house sake bar for drinks and snacks in a lounge-style setting. Choose from over 30 drink options, including local wines, classic Japanese sake, and soft drinks. Pair your drink with seasonal bites like pickled long eggplant or potato salad. If you’re curious to try something new, ask for access to “the Kura”—a sake cellar with over 100 varieties. Take a flashlight and explore the cool, dim room where unique bottles await discovery.

Onsen and Wellness

The onsen at Hatagoya Jozankei Shoten has been loved since the days of its predecessor, Keiryuso. The large communal bath blends old-school atmosphere with modern comforts like a sauna and cold bath. The mineral-rich hot spring water, sourced from Jozankei’s historic supply, is circulated and partially diluted, offering a warm, cleansing soak. Outside, the open-air bath lets you relax under the sky while breathing in mountain air.

Bath hours:

4:00 PM–3:00 AM

6:00 AM–11:00 AM

Day-use is also available between 1:30 PM and 6:00 PM (adults only, ages 13+). Tattooed individuals are asked not to use the facilities.

Guests with Tattoos

Unfortunately, the ryokan asks those with tattoos to refrain from using the public bath facilities.

  • Public indoor and outdoor baths
  • Sauna and cold bath

Activities

The focus here isn’t on planned activities—it’s about creating your own moments. Grab a drink, explore the quiet hallways, enjoy an unplanned stroll, or sip sake while reading. The freedom lies in your hands. If you’re feeling social, the lounge area and shared spaces offer a chance to chat with other travelers over a drink.

Additional Features

Amenities are intentionally limited—bring your own or pick what you need from the front desk. If you opt out of using amenities, you’ll receive a token for the gachapon machine as a small reward.

Drinks are fairly priced. Beer starts at 460 yen, and sake tasting begins at just 250 yen.

Renovated from a long-standing local inn, the space blends nostalgia with informal comfort.

There’s no service charge, keeping your costs simple and transparent.

Hatagoya Jozankei Shoten is not your traditional ryokan—it’s more like a relaxing retreat built for spontaneity. You’ll find no rigid rules here, just the space and atmosphere to do what you want, when you want.
