Overview

Stay in central Takayama at Hida Hotel Plaza, around five minutes on foot from JR Takayama Station and the Nohi Bus Center. The location places Takayama’s historic streets, morning markets, restaurants, sake breweries, and cultural sites within easy reach.

The hotel has 217 rooms spread across the Kita, East, and Minami buildings. Its size allows you to choose between Japanese rooms, Japanese-Western accommodation, Western rooms, accessible layouts, and three special rooms with private natural hot spring baths.

After exploring the city, you can return for Hida cuisine, bathe in the rooftop onsen while looking across Takayama, or relax in the unusual tatami-floored bathing area beneath the East Building. Multiple restaurants, a café, a shop, and an indoor pool give you additional options without leaving the property.

Accommodation

Choose from Japanese, Japanese-Western, and Western rooms in several sizes and grades. The selection includes compact accommodation for a solo stay, rooms with separate beds, large tatami layouts for families, high-floor rooms, accessible accommodation, and suites.

Yuzan Kosho is the hotel’s highest-grade room category. Only three rooms are available, each measuring approximately 50 square metres and accommodating up to three people. Every room has a private bath filled with natural hot spring water, allowing you to enjoy Hida Takayama Onsen without entering a communal facility.

The Yuzan Kosho interiors showcase Hida woodworking, locally inspired colours, timber furniture, and carefully crafted decorative details. This category works particularly well when private natural hot spring access forms an important part of your stay.

Japanese rooms include layouts with ten tatami mats and an additional 4.5-tatami area. Selected rooms occupy the upper floors, giving you a higher outlook across Takayama. Larger Japanese rooms can accommodate families and groups on futon bedding.

Japanese-Western rooms combine twin beds with a tatami sitting and sleeping area. The high-floor Yuga rooms have a ten-tatami main space and an additional 4.5-tatami section with two beds, while other layouts provide Simmons beds or larger Japanese areas.

The Universal Japanese-Western Room combines a ten-tatami room with an eight-tatami bedroom containing two beds. The layout supports wheelchair use and gives you more space to move between the sleeping and sitting areas.

Western accommodation includes standard twins, wide-bed single rooms, Hollywood-style rooms, deluxe rooms, junior suites, and concept rooms inspired by Hida design. Named interiors include Mori no Kotoba, Enku, Provincial, Japan Provincial, and Oak.

Every room includes free Wi-Fi and a private bathroom or bathing area. Standard equipment includes a television, refrigerator, electric kettle, tea set, safe, hair dryer, towels, toiletries, indoor clothing, and a washlet toilet. Exact equipment and bathroom layouts differ by category.

Dining

Dining choices include Japanese, French, and Chinese restaurants, along with a café serving drinks, light meals, cakes, and seasonal desserts. Your dinner venue and menu depend on the accommodation plan you select.

Kachaya and Takumichaya serve Japanese food using seasonal ingredients from Hida and surrounding mountain regions. Takumichaya specialises in Japanese kaiseki, while Kachaya includes 12 private dining rooms that work well for a quieter family meal or celebration.

Dinner may feature Hida beef, local vegetables, mountain produce, rice, miso, fish, and dishes connected to Takayama’s food traditions. Hōba miso places seasoned miso on a magnolia leaf and cooks it at the table, releasing a rich aroma that pairs well with rice and beef.

Bonjour serves French courses and à la carte dishes using seasonal Hida ingredients. Rairai Hanten offers Chinese cooking, including hot dishes, cold dishes, vegetables, noodles, rice, and changing seasonal choices.

Additional dishes can be arranged in advance. Choices include Hida beef fillet or sirloin steak, Hida beef cooked with hōba miso, three- or five-piece Hida beef sushi selections, stewed Hida beef, seasonal sashimi, and Hida pork with hōba miso.

Children’s meals and a menu avoiding seven major allergens are also available through advance arrangements. Celebration cakes can be prepared for birthdays, anniversaries, and other occasions.

Breakfast is served as a Japanese and Western buffet. Local choices include Hida Koshihikari rice, miso soup, hōba miso, Hida beef tendon simmered with daikon, salad from a local farm, apple juice from a Hida orchard, and yogurt produced in the region.

Café Pico opens from morning until evening and serves freshly ground coffee, light meals, cakes, parfaits, and fruit desserts. A shorter drinks-only service continues later in the evening.

Onsen and Wellness

Hida Hotel Plaza has two large natural hot spring areas. The rooftop and ninth-floor complex occupies the Kita Building, while Mokko-no-Yu sits on the basement level of the East Building.

Hiten-no-Yu is the hotel’s own source. The clear water is classified as a sodium chloride spring and contains a small amount of salt, helping your body retain warmth after bathing.

The water is heated because its natural temperature is below the ideal level for bathing. No water is added, while circulation and filtration support temperature and hygiene management.

Traditional bathing indications include fatigue, sensitivity to cold, neuralgia, muscle and joint discomfort, stiff shoulders, bruises, sprains, and general health maintenance.

The ninth-floor observation baths look across the Takayama cityscape and toward the Japanese Alps when the weather is clear. This area includes large indoor baths, rooftop open-air baths, hinoki and ceramic pot baths, and a mist sauna.

The women’s rooftop area includes a silk bath, while the men’s side has a jet bath. Both sides provide ReFa shower heads, washing stations, changing rooms, grooming products, and views from the upper floors.

The rooftop and ninth-floor bathing complex opens from 6:00 a.m. until midnight. The mist sauna normally operates from 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Daily and weekly cleaning closures apply.

Mokko-no-Yu has a warm tatami-covered floor around the bathing area, reducing the hard, cold feel often found in tiled bathhouses. It includes a large natural hot spring bath, a cold-water bath, and a dry sauna.

Mokko-no-Yu opens from 5:00 a.m. until 1:00 a.m. the following morning. The dry sauna normally operates between 3:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.

Towels are not placed in the public bathing areas, so you need to bring the bath and face towels from your room.

The hotel does not offer day bathing or a reservable private communal bath. Private natural hot spring bathing is available only when you choose one of the three Yuzan Kosho rooms.

Guests with Tattoos

You cannot use the communal indoor baths, rooftop open-air baths, pot baths, cold-water bath, or saunas when you have tattoos.

Choose a Yuzan Kosho room when you want to bathe in natural hot spring water. Its private onsen bath belongs only to your room and can be used without entering the shared bathing areas.

Facilities

The bright lobby displays WIND OF HIDA, a large work by metal artist Hideo Osumi inspired by the changing winds of the Hida seasons. A detailed karakuri festival float made through cooperation between local students, craftspeople, and engineers is also displayed in the building.

Hida Koji is the hotel shop. Its design recalls a small Takayama street with wooden bridges, lattice doors, greenery, and a pond with carp. You can browse sarubobo dolls, local sweets, Hida food, crafts, souvenirs, drinks, and useful travel products.

The hotel has four main restaurants and Café Pico, allowing you to choose Japanese, French, Chinese, or lighter café dining. Private rooms are available in selected restaurants.

A 25-metre indoor heated pool has five lanes. Some lanes remain in use by the attached swimming school, so the area available to you depends on the day and time. A swimming cap is required, and floats cannot be used.

Large banquet halls, private dining rooms, wedding facilities, and meeting rooms support celebrations, business events, conferences, and organised group stays. The meeting facilities include high-speed internet and large monitors.

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the accommodation and shared areas. The hotel does not have an on-site coin laundry, but a public laundry can be found within about five minutes on foot.

Free parking is available for around 100 cars and ten buses. Electric-vehicle charging is also provided through the hotel car park.

The complete hotel is non-smoking. Four designated smoking booths are available inside the building.

Activities

Walk to Takayama’s historic Sanmachi district to explore preserved merchant houses, cafés, Hida beef shops, sweet shops, craft stores, and sake breweries.

The Miyagawa Morning Market follows the river and sells seasonal vegetables, fruit, pickles, flowers, snacks, and handmade products. A second market operates beside Takayama Jinya.

Takayama Jinya preserves the former administrative buildings used to govern the Hida region during the Edo period. You can walk through tatami rooms, kitchens, offices, courtyards, and the old rice storehouse.

The Takayama Festival Float Exhibition Hall displays real floats used during the autumn festival. Nearby Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine provides another connection to Takayama’s festival traditions.

Hida Folk Village is an open-air museum with thatched and wooden buildings moved from communities across the mountain region. The interiors, farm tools, craft demonstrations, and seasonal events introduce you to traditional life in Hida.

For a longer outing, Shirakawa-go is around 50 minutes away by car. Hida Furukawa takes around 30 minutes, while Gero Onsen can be reached in approximately one hour.

The Okuhida hot spring villages and Shinhotaka area provide mountain scenery, additional onsen experiences, hiking routes, and access toward the Northern Alps. Travel times depend on weather and road conditions.

Additional Features

Check-in begins at 3:00 p.m., and check-out is by 10:00 a.m.

JR Takayama Station and the Nohi Bus Center are around five minutes away on foot. From Nagoya, the Limited Express Hida normally takes around two and a half hours to reach Takayama.

By car, the hotel is around ten minutes from Takayama Interchange under normal traffic conditions. Free parking is available on site.

You can wear the hotel’s jinbei-style indoor clothing throughout the building, including in the restaurants and shared areas.

Pets cannot enter the hotel, apart from recognised assistance dogs. The main entrance remains open throughout the night, and reception is staffed 24 hours a day.
