Overview

Set beside a sheltered inlet in Nanki-Katsuura, Hotel Nagisaya gives you uninterrupted views of blue water, wooded hills, and the Kumano coastline. The property stands on the former site of an imperial family villa, where the natural setting creates a quiet escape from the pace of everyday life.

Three hot spring sources rise within the grounds and supply the indoor and open-air bathing areas. You can soak beside the sea, watch colourful fish in the indoor bath’s small aquarium, and enjoy seasonal dishes built around the seafood of Katsuura.

Hotel Nagisaya also places you close to the sacred sites and pilgrimage paths of Kumano. After visiting Nachi Falls, Kumano Nachi Taisha, or the stone paths of Daimonzaka, you can return to a Japanese room, a warm sulfur bath, and an evening meal filled with local flavours.

Accommodation

The East Wing and West Wing offer Japanese rooms with views across the inlet and the sea. A smaller selection of Western rooms faces the mountain, providing a practical choice when you prefer a raised bed.

The East Wing is the newer accommodation area. Its entrance areas are more spacious, and the main rooms have a ten-tatami layout. You can choose a traditional Japanese room with futon bedding or a Japanese room with beds placed within the tatami setting. Wide windows bring the coastal view into the room throughout the day.

The West Wing offers eight-to-ten-tatami Japanese rooms with futon bedding. These rooms sit above the reception and banquet areas, making them convenient when you are travelling with family, friends, or an organised group. West Wing rooms do not include a private bath, so bathing takes place in the shared hot spring facilities.

Each room includes a washbasin, washlet toilet, television, refrigerator, electric kettle, hairdryer, towels, yukata, toothbrush set, and storage space. Razors, shower caps, and brushes are available from the amenity counter. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property.

All accommodation rooms are non-smoking. A designated smoking area is provided separately.

Dining

Dinner introduces you to the seafood and regional flavours of Nanki-Katsuura. Fresh tuna, shellfish, local fish, meat, and seasonal produce are prepared as Japanese multi-course meals, with the exact dishes changing according to the season and the day’s catch.

The Kumano Four Specialities Kaiseki brings together fresh wild tuna, Ise lobster, abalone, and whale in one meal. Each ingredient is prepared in a way that highlights its individual texture and flavour, giving you a broad introduction to the food culture of the Kumano coast.

The Nagisaya Gensen-Mushi Kaiseki uses steam from a hot spring source rising around 500 metres beneath the grounds. Seafood and mountain ingredients are gently steamed to preserve their natural taste. This original cooking method has been recognised as geo-food connected with the geological character of the Nanki Kumano region.

The Fresh Tuna and Domestic Beef Steak Kaiseki combines the firm, springy texture of tuna landed from the Kumano Sea with a carefully prepared domestic beef steak. It is a satisfying choice when you want to enjoy both seafood and meat.

The Nanki Tuna Kaiseki places Katsuura’s famous fresh tuna at the centre of the meal. You can taste it as sashimi, steak, fried fish, and a final rice bowl, allowing you to experience several textures and cooking styles within one course.

Additional dishes include tuna steak, fried tuna, assorted sashimi, whale sashimi, and seafood or mountain ingredients steamed with hot spring vapour. Advance arrangements are recommended.

Dinner and breakfast are served in a dining venue rather than inside your room. Restaurant Marine overlooks both the courtyard and the sea. Breakfast is usually a Japanese set meal, although a buffet may be served with selected arrangements or on certain dates. A children’s meal is available for younger family members, and dietary requests can be considered when shared in advance.

Onsen and Wellness

Hotel Nagisaya draws water from three hot spring sources within the grounds. Two sources provide simple sulfur spring water, while the third is a sodium-calcium chloride spring. The sulfur water has a soft feel against the skin, while the salt content helps your body retain warmth after bathing.

Shiomi-no-Yu is an open-air bath set beside the inlet. Natural rocks edge the bathing area, and the sea appears to continue beyond the water. You can feel the coastal breeze while looking across the bay and the green hills around it. Separate bathing areas are provided for men and women.

The spacious indoor bath has large windows overlooking the inlet. A small aquarium built into the bathing area lets you watch colourful fish while you soak. Cold drinking water is available for cooling down, and powerful vibration jets are positioned to refresh tired feet and legs.

The indoor bath is normally available from the afternoon until midnight and reopens early the following morning. Shiomi-no-Yu closes earlier in the evening before reopening for morning bathing. Operating times may change during maintenance or busy periods.

The spring water is traditionally used for muscle and joint discomfort, stiffness, bruises, sprains, sensitivity to cold, fatigue, cuts, and some chronic skin conditions.

Guests with Tattoos

If you have tattoos, you cannot use the shared indoor or open-air hot spring baths. Private rental baths are not available at Hotel Nagisaya.

Facilities

Restaurant Marine provides the main setting for dinner and breakfast, with windows looking towards the courtyard and sea. The property also has a tea lounge, vending machines, and evening venues where you can enjoy drinks or karaoke after bathing.

Shopping Plaza Sen carries gifts and products from Nanki-Katsuura and the wider Kumano region. Shipping services are available when you prefer to send local food, sweets, or souvenirs directly home.

The banquet facilities range from the large Mikumano hall, which has a stage, to the medium-sized Kuroshio hall and smaller Japanese rooms such as Misaki, Isoji, and Shioji. These spaces support celebrations, meetings, group meals, and organised gatherings of different sizes.

During summer, the courtyard may host a seasonal beer garden overlooking the inlet. You can enjoy the evening air, surrounding hills, and coastal scenery while spending time outdoors.

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property. Accessibility support includes loan wheelchairs, Western-style toilets in the accommodation rooms, and handrails beside the main bathing pools. The building is not fully barrier-free, so some areas may still involve steps or changes in floor level.

Activities

The rocky shore beside Hotel Nagisaya gives you the chance to try coastal fishing without travelling elsewhere. Fishing rods, bait, and buckets can be rented at reception. Depending on the season, you may catch species such as black sea bream, rockfish, or wrasse.

When kitchen operations allow, your catch can be prepared as part of your meal. This service may not be available during the busiest periods, so arrangements should be made before you begin fishing.

Katsuura Fishing Port is known for fresh tuna landed without being frozen. An early visit lets you see tuna arranged across the market floor before the morning auction begins. You can also explore the town’s seafood shops and restaurants to taste more local tuna dishes.

For a day in the sacred Kumano landscape, walk along Daimonzaka, a stone-paved section of the Kumano Kodo lined with ancient cedar trees. The path leads towards Kumano Nachi Taisha, Seiganto-ji Temple, and Nachi Falls.

Kumano Hayatama Taisha in Shingu and Kumano Hongu Taisha deeper in the Kii Peninsula allow you to continue your journey through the three grand shrines of Kumano. You can also join a sightseeing cruise around Kii-no-Matsushima or visit the museums and coastal attractions of nearby Taiji.

Additional Features

A shuttle operates between JR Kii-Katsuura Station and Hotel Nagisaya during scheduled morning and afternoon periods. Free parking is available for up to 100 vehicles.

Hotel Nagisaya has 73 rooms and welcomes solo stays, couples, families, and larger groups. All rooms and shared indoor areas are non-smoking, with smoking limited to the designated space.

Free Wi-Fi, a souvenir shop, restaurant dining, banquet halls, fishing equipment, a seasonal beer garden, accessible bathing handrails, and loan wheelchairs support your stay beside the Kumano coast.
