Overview
At Hotel Okuyumoto, you stay on a quiet hillside in Hakone Yumoto, surrounded by forest, mountain views, and the flowing Sukumo River. The sound of the water follows you through much of your stay, from selected rooms and open-air baths to the observation terrace and garden.
You can reach Hakone Yumoto Station in around ten minutes by shuttle or car, while Lake Ashi is around twenty minutes away by car. This location gives you a peaceful base for exploring Hakone’s museums, historic sites, walking routes, and traditional woodcraft workshops.
Natural hot spring water flows from a private source into the shared baths and selected room baths. After sightseeing, you can return for a soak beside the river, enjoy freshly prepared Japanese dishes, and spend the evening beneath Hakone’s wooded mountains.
Accommodation
You can choose from Japanese-style rooms, Japanese-Western rooms, updated rooms with beds, and special rooms with private hot spring baths. Depending on the room, you may look across the Sukumo River, the gardens, Yusaka Mountain, or the surrounding forest.
Keiryutei rooms sit on the river side of the third floor. Each room combines twin beds with Japanese design, a window-side seating area, and a private semi-open-air hot spring bath. You can open the large bath window, listen to the river, and see the nearby weir and waterfall. These rooms also include Wi-Fi, an air purifier, and a humidifier.
Shikitei includes two spacious rooms with private gardens and open-air baths. Tsubaki no Ma combines a large tatami room with a separate twin bedroom, a sunken table facing the garden, an indoor hot spring bath, and a private garden bath. Mizuki no Ma also combines tatami and twin beds, with a ceramic open-air bath in the garden and a private indoor hot spring bath with a television. Selected Mizuki no Ma plans allow you to choose between dinner in your room and dinner at Yamazato.
Sukumotei rooms combine an eight-tatami sitting area, Japanese-style beds, and a salon space. River-facing, garden-facing, and mountain-facing rooms are available. River and garden rooms include a private hot spring bath with a wide view and a window that creates a semi-open-air setting. Mountain-facing baths have fixed windows overlooking the landscape. The flat interior has no steps, making it easier to move around the room.
Seseragitei rooms are non-smoking and face the river. You can relax in a six-tatami Ryukyu-style area, sleep in twin beds, and enjoy a private semi-open-air hot spring bath while listening to the Sukumo River. Wide windows bring in views of Yusaka Mountain, and two televisions allow you to watch from either the living area or the beds.
Standard Japanese-Western rooms combine tatami space with Simmons twin beds. These rooms face the mountain and include a private indoor hot spring bath. Traditional Japanese rooms are also available with tatami flooring, futon bedding, a veranda seating area, and views of Hakone’s natural surroundings. Some Japanese rooms include a private hot spring bath, while the simpler room category uses the shared bathing facilities.
Dining
Your dinner at Yamazato combines a Japanese set meal with freshly prepared dishes from the open kitchen. The set meal normally includes a starter, seasonal appetisers, sashimi, and a dish chosen to reflect the time of year.
From the open kitchen, you can order steak served hot from the grill and tempura fried after you select your preferred ingredients. Steak refills are available, while the buffet area includes salad, fruit, dessert, rice, ochazuke, coffee, and tea. You dine at table seating arranged in private-style sections, giving you more space to enjoy the meal at your own pace.
Dinner is normally served between 18:00 and 21:00. During busy periods, dining may follow two set starting times. Your dining location depends on the room and plan you book, with selected Shikitei plans including dinner in your room.
Breakfast is a Japanese and Western buffet served at Yamazato from 07:00 to 09:30. You can choose from Japanese breakfast dishes, bread, salads, fruit, and other morning favourites. The open kitchen also prepares hot egg dishes and pancakes.
Onsen and Wellness
Natural hot spring water flows from Hotel Okuyumoto’s private source into the public baths and selected room baths. The water is a clear, colourless simple spring with a soft feel. It is also identified as an alkaline simple spring in the private-bath room information.
Traditional bathing indications include relief from fatigue, sensitivity to cold, muscle and joint discomfort, stiff shoulders, bruises, sprains, and some chronic digestive complaints. The warm water provides an inviting way to rest after walking through Hakone’s hills and sightseeing areas.
Fujinoyu is the women’s open-air bathing area beside the Sukumo River. You can choose between a rock bath, a cypress barrel bath, and a ceramic bath while listening to the mountain stream.
Takikan-no-Yu is the men’s open-air bathing area. It includes rock and cypress baths beside a natural-looking weir and waterfall. The tubs have different water temperatures, allowing you to choose between a warmer or gentler soak.
Separate indoor baths for men and women provide larger bathing areas with stone-lined washing spaces. Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hairdryers, basic toiletries, and a baby bath are available. You should bring the bath towel and small towel provided in your room.
The indoor and open-air baths operate from 15:00 to midnight and again from 05:00 to 10:00. The sauna is available from 15:00 to 20:00.
Yasuragi-dokoro Nadeshiko-an provides body care, foot reflexology, head care, hand care, leg oil treatments, facials, and aroma oil treatments. Men can also book treatments. Relaxation appointments are available in the evening, while facial and body treatments require advance booking. The salon normally closes on Thursdays.
Guests with Tattoos
If you have tattoos, access to the shared indoor and open-air hot spring baths will be restricted. A Keiryutei, Shikitei, Sukumotei, Seseragitei, or other room with a private hot spring bath gives you a private bathing alternative.
Facilities
During your stay, you can use Restaurant Yamazato, the open lobby, a rooftop observation terrace, the tree-shaded garden plaza, a seasonal outdoor pool beside the river, banquet and meeting rooms, karaoke rooms, a table tennis area, and a shop selling Hakone yosegi woodcraft, hot spring sweets, local snacks, and regional gifts. A children’s playroom opens during selected holiday periods. A late-night ramen and sake area normally opens on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings.
From the rooftop terrace, you can look across Yusaka Mountain, the Sukumo River, and Futagoyama on clear days. The terrace also provides a good place to see the night sky. In the garden plaza, you can sit beneath the trees, see seasonal flowers, or follow a short walking route near the river.
The outdoor garden pool opens during summer. The shallow section suits younger children, and you can use the pool before check-in or after check-out during its operating season.
Activities
You can spend time on the observation terrace, walk through the garden, play table tennis, book karaoke, or swim in the outdoor pool during summer. Around late May and early June, fireflies may appear beside the Sukumo River, although sightings depend on the weather and natural conditions.
Lake Ashi is around twenty minutes away by car. You can also visit the Hakone Open-Air Museum, Hakone Glass Forest Museum, Lalique Museum, Gora Park, Hakone Kowakien Yunessun, and Hakone-en Aquarium.
Closer to the property, you can explore Sounji Temple, the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Natural History, and Hatajuku’s traditional yosegi woodcraft area. Kanazashi Woodcraft provides hands-on access to Hakone’s patterned woodcraft tradition, while Amazake Chaya introduces you to the atmosphere of the old Tokaido route. Hiking routes and golf courses are also available across the surrounding Hakone area.
