Overview

You’ll find Hotel Yamadaya on a quiet hilltop, nearly 40 meters above sea level, overlooking the gentle curve of Shimoda Bay. The peaceful coastal view, the surrounding woodlands, and the evening sky at sunset all blend into a scene that stays with you long after your visit. This is where you’ll soak in natural hot springs, enjoy meals crafted with the freshest seafood, and relax in rooms that catch the breeze from the sea.

Whether you’re traveling from Tokyo or coming in from further across Japan, the ryokan welcomes you with warmth and a deep connection to the land and water of Izu.

Accommodation

All 24 rooms at Hotel Yamadaya are traditional Japanese-style, with wide tatami spaces and large windows that face the sea. From your room, you can watch the light change over Shimoda Bay—from shimmering afternoons to glowing sunset to the quiet flicker of the town’s lights at night. Every room invites you to slow down and enjoy the rhythm of the coast.

At this height above the ocean, even the air feels fresh. You can sit by the window and take in the view while sipping green tea or enjoy a restful night on futons laid out after your bath.

Dining

Your meals at Hotel Yamadaya center on what the sea offers each day. Shimoda is known for seafood shaped by the Kuroshio Current, and the executive chef prepares everything in the house style. Look forward to delicacies like local kinmedai (splendid alfonsino), abalone, and turban shell, each one highlighting the flavors of Izu’s waters.

Dinner is a beautifully arranged course meal that lets you taste the season. Whether grilled, simmered, or raw, every dish comes with the quiet confidence of a chef who understands the ocean. Breakfast also features fresh, local ingredients to start your morning with energy and calm.

Onsen and Wellness

The open-air baths at Hotel Yamadaya look out across the bay and sky. You can bathe under the stars or in the morning light, surrounded by local plants and stones native to Izu. The baths sit at the edge of the hillside, where you’ll feel a natural connection to the landscape.

The spring water is a mild, alkaline “tanjyun” type. It helps ease fatigue, stiff shoulders, rheumatism, and neuralgia. The onsen is open from 2:30 p.m. to 9:00 a.m., so you can choose your favorite time—daylight or dusk.

For quiet time with your partner or family, you can use the private hinoki bath at no charge. Just reserve it at check-in. Each family gets up to 40 minutes until midnight, and the warm scent of hinoki wood makes the experience even more relaxing.

Guests with Tattoos

If you have tattoos, please ask the staff about using the private bath. It’s a welcoming option for those who want to enjoy the onsen privately.

Facilities

The ryokan includes a lobby with sea views, open-air and indoor baths, a private family bath, and traditional meal spaces. Every detail supports a restful stay. You can also use the complimentary shuttle from Izukyu Shimoda Station, available daily from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Be sure to reserve your seat in advance.

Activities

During your stay, take a walk around Shimoda Bay or explore the nearby beaches. You can visit the Perry Road district for historical charm, shop for local crafts, or enjoy the ocean from a sightseeing boat. When you return, your room, your bath, and your evening meal will be waiting.

Additional Features

Hotel Yamadaya is easy to reach from major stations. From Tokyo, you can take the Shinkansen to Atami, transfer to the local Izukyu Line, and arrive in Shimoda in about 2 hours and 20 minutes. The shuttle meets you at the station and brings you directly to the hotel.

The ryokan also welcomes international travelers from Narita, Haneda, and Kansai airports, with detailed train routes provided for your convenience.
