Overview
Deep in the forests of Hakusan Ichirino Highlands, you’ll find a rustic inn wrapped in nature’s embrace. At this ryokan, the food is more than a meal—it’s a way of life. The inn crafts its own soy sauce, koji, and honey, all from scratch. You’ll dine around a traditional irori hearth inside a 100-year-old farmhouse, savoring local specialties like wild game, Hida beef, and organic vegetables grilled over charcoal. Let the mountains calm your spirit, and let every bite warm your body from the inside out.
Accommodation
You can choose from three main room styles: traditional Japanese rooms, Western-style rooms with beds, or the special room with a private open-air bath. From each room, you’ll see lush forests, gentle hills, and the calming green of the countryside.
The Japanese-style rooms give you a sense of nostalgia. Relax on tatami floors and gaze out the window at the peaceful trees. These rooms are perfect for families or small groups and offer a quiet space to slow down and reconnect.
The Western-style rooms come in twin and triple layouts. Each one includes sofas and table seating, giving you plenty of space to stretch out. You can enjoy the forest views through wide windows, just like in the Japanese rooms.
For a more luxurious stay, book the special room with an open-air bath. This suite includes a spacious wooden veranda and a garden-facing hot spring bath built from natural rock. It’s ideal for couples or anyone seeking extra comfort and privacy.
Dining
Meals at Roan take you back to a simpler time. You’ll gather around a sunken hearth in a thatched farmhouse and grill your food over open flames. You’ll taste local game like bear, wild boar, and venison, all aged to bring out their natural sweetness without any strong smells. In spring, you can enjoy fresh mountain vegetables picked by hand from the surrounding hills.
Start your day with a countryside breakfast. The inn serves steaming rice cooked in a wood-fired stove and an array of side dishes featuring local produce. You can eat as much rice as you like—it’s a favorite among many return travelers.
Dinner highlights include the famous Hida beef, grilled slowly over charcoal to bring out its tenderness and rich flavor. You can also try special dishes like grilled river fish caught on-site, Hakusan firm tofu, or local gibier prepared with traditional techniques.
The dining areas vary depending on your preference. Sit around the hearth in the main farmhouse, or choose a table-and-chair setting if you prefer. For group gatherings or private dinners, the inn can rearrange seating to create your perfect dining setup.
Onsen and Wellness
While not a natural hot spring, the inn’s bathing areas use crystal-clear water sourced from Hakusan’s underground streams. You can relax in a large outdoor bath surrounded by trees. In autumn, you’ll soak under colorful leaves. In winter, snow falls gently as you unwind in the warm water. As you listen to birdsong or rustling leaves, you’ll feel fully immersed in nature.
If you prefer privacy, reserve one of two private baths. One is a hinoki bath made entirely of cypress wood—perfect for young children or sensitive skin. The other is a stone bath tucked into the forest, where you can enjoy the open sky and natural sounds.
The inn also offers a tent sauna, heated with local firewood. You can try a self-pour steam session using water scented with distilled kuromoji, a plant known for its skin-soothing properties. After your sauna, cool off in a cold-water bath filled with spring water, then relax in the open air surrounded by forest.
For a different kind of relaxation, book a private ganbanyoku stone sauna. Lie on warm stones and feel the infrared heat soothe your muscles. These sessions are completely private and great for individuals or couples.
Guests with Tattoos
If you have a tattoo, you can enjoy the private baths without issue. For shared facilities, please contact the inn in advance. The staff will assist you with alternative options if needed.
Facilities
Roan gives you more than a place to sleep—it’s a full experience. In the main farmhouse, gather around the irori hearth at “Yasukedon” for charcoal-grilled meals. For a more accessible option, dine at “Suginoko,” which features tables and chairs.
The lobby feels like a quiet lodge. Sip coffee or tea as you gaze out at the garden. In the morning, stroll through the forest from the terrace, or enjoy seasonal blooms in the courtyard.
The inn also offers a sauna, a self-service beauty room, billiards, ping pong, board games, and a karaoke lounge. You can enjoy drinks by the fireplace, browse the shop for local treats, or plan your day using brochures from the sightseeing corner.
Activities
Roan offers seasonal tours and events throughout the year. In early summer, join a guided tour to watch fireflies dance under the stars. In autumn, admire mountain foliage during your forest walks. Winter brings snow-covered trails perfect for peaceful strolls. You can also take part in local festivals, workshops, or even stargazing outings.
