Overview

Seryo is a ryokan located in the tranquil village of Ohara, Kyoto. Seryo has been recognized by the Michelin Guide for nine consecutive years. The ryokan is ideally located near Sanzen-in Temple, making it an ideal base for exploring the cultural treasures of Ohara. Some rooms come with private open air baths and there is a public onsen on site too.

Accommodation

Seryo is small and intimate, with only nine rooms. All come with views of the ryokan’s serene garden:

  • Rooms with Open-Air Baths (2 rooms): These luxurious rooms provide private open-air baths and a dedicated garden. Enjoy the beauty of Ohara’s mountains and sunsets in complete privacy.
  • Japanese-Style Rooms (4 rooms): Traditional tatami rooms that exude a classic Kyoto atmosphere, perfect for those seeking an authentic experience.

Dining

At Seryo, dining is an exquisite experience featuring the “Kusanaaji Kaiseki” course, which highlights seasonal ingredients such as Kyoto vegetables, herbs from the ryokan’s own garden, and wild plants. The cuisine is complemented by carefully selected local Kyoto sake.

  • Dinner Options: The signature “Kusanaaji Kaiseki” course, a shabu-shabu course featuring domestic Japanese Black Beef, and a winter-only wild boar hotpot course.
  • Breakfast: A traditional Japanese breakfast featuring dishes like Yudofu (boiled tofu) made with premium Kyoto tofu.
  • Lunch at Hinazato Restaurant: Offers a variety of Kyoto specialties, including a Yuba (tofu skin) set meal and seasonal bento boxes, perfect for those visiting for a day trip.

Onsen & Wellness

Seryo has a public onsen on site with gender separated open air baths as well as an indoor bath. The onsen has high sodium and bicarbonate ion content. The ryokan has separate open-air baths for men and women, as well as indoor baths.

  • Hosen-in Temple is famous for its illuminated gardens and “Blood Ceiling”
  • Raigoin Temple: Known as the birthplace of Ohara Shomyo, Buddhist folk songs. Regular chanting sessions.
