Overview

Kaido-Roman On’yado Tsutaya brings you to Kiso-Fukushima, a historic post town on the Nakasendo route. Founded in 1688 as an inn for travelers on the Kiso Road, the ryokan still keeps a strong connection to the old highway, the Kiso River, and the mountain culture of the valley.

This is a good stay when you want history, local food, natural hot spring bathing, and easy access to Kiso walking routes. You can soak in an open-air bath by the river, enjoy the indoor herbal bath using Hyakuso-yaku from the Kiso region, dine on Shinshu ingredients, and walk to nearby sights such as Ueno-dan, Kozenji Temple, and the public footbath by the Kiso River.

Accommodation

On’yado Tsutaya offers Japanese-style rooms in the main building and Western-style rooms in Annex Hatago across from the ryokan. The main building gives you the stronger traditional stay, with tatami flooring, Japanese design, and rooms facing either the Kiso River or the mountains. Annex Hatago suits you well when you prefer beds and a simpler Western-style layout.

The two special top-floor rooms are the best choice when you want private bathing. Tsukakari is a Japanese-style room with beds and a private Kiso hinoki open-air bath on the balcony. Tsukiakari is a Japanese-style room with futon bedding and a private open-air bath. Both rooms sit on the Kiso River side and give you a more private bath experience with the sound of the river below.

The standard rooms include larger 12-tatami Japanese rooms, a 10-tatami Japanese room with beds, river-side 8-tatami rooms, mountain-side 8-tatami rooms, and hotel-choice Japanese rooms. Annex Hatago has twin and double rooms, with check-in, meals, and large bath use handled at the main building. The annex has no elevator for people, though it has a luggage lift and a coin laundry room on the first floor.

Rooms include practical items such as heating and cooling, TV, refrigerator, safe, kettle, tea set, towels, yukata or samue depending on room type, and standard bath items. Some rooms include a shower or private bathroom, while others focus on the shared bath experience.

Dining

Dining at On’yado Tsutaya focuses on Kiso-style hospitality called ogottsuo, a local word connected to generous home-style feasting and welcome. The meal reflects the food culture of the mountain valley, with Shinshu seasonal ingredients, Kiso condiments, miso, soy sauce, pickles, and local flavors shaped by clear water and the surrounding mountains.

Dinner may include Shinshu Marble Pork, seasonal mountain ingredients, river fish, local vegetables, and carefully prepared Japanese dishes. The meal is not overly formal, but it has a strong sense of place. It brings together the taste of old Kiso, the warmth of an inn on the Nakasendo, and the skill of a Japanese kitchen.

Breakfast is served with Shinshu mountain ingredients on Kiso lacquerware. Freshly cooked rice, warm dishes, small seasonal sides, and local flavors give you a steady start before walking the town or heading farther along the Kiso Road.

Meals are served at Sachi no Kura, a tatami dining room with table seating, or in a private dining room when arranged. Special dishes may include Shinshu Premium beef shabu-shabu, salt-grilled iwana river fish, horse sashimi, or the ryokan’s special soy sauce ramen made without chemical seasonings.

Onsen and Wellness

On’yado Tsutaya has natural hot spring bathing connected to Mt. Ontake and the Kiso Valley. The open-air bath uses water rich in natural carbon dioxide components and lets you bathe while listening to the Kiso River and feeling the wooden bath atmosphere around you.

The indoor bath features Hyakuso-yaku herbal bath water. Hyakuso-yaku is a traditional Kiso-region herbal medicine made from kihada, a tree long associated with Mt. Ontake culture. The herbal bath warms the body and adds a local wellness touch that feels different from a standard public bath.

The spring quality is a carbon dioxide-containing calcium bicarbonate cold mineral spring. It is associated with support for neuralgia, muscle pain, joint pain, frozen shoulder, motor paralysis, stiff joints, bruises, sprains, chronic digestive concerns, cold sensitivity, fatigue recovery, general health promotion, cuts, burns, chronic skin concerns, high blood pressure, and arteriosclerosis.

The open-air bath and indoor herbal bath are shared by men and women in separate bathing areas. Day-use bathing is also available when the ryokan can accept outside bathing.

Facilities

On’yado Tsutaya has shared open-air hot spring baths, indoor herbal baths, restaurant Sachi no Kura, private dining rooms, a lobby, lounge, drink service area, shop, Annex Hatago rooms, coin laundry in the annex, parking, and station shuttle service by advance request.

The lobby reflects the ryokan’s post-town history, with traditional Japanese details, old clocks, armor, and Kiso lacquer pieces. The lounge has free drinks such as coffee, black tea, hojicha, green tea, and rooibos tea, with hot water prepared in a tea kettle. Alcoholic drinks can also be ordered in the lounge until evening.

The shop carries Kiso lacquerware, local items, souvenirs, and selected products chosen by the ryokan. After bathing, you can enjoy cold Kiso water served from a hinoki bucket, giving you a simple but memorable post-bath moment.

Activities

On’yado Tsutaya is a strong base for walking around Kiso-Fukushima. Nearby, you can visit Ueno-dan, a post-town area on the hill; Kozenji Temple, known for its large dry landscape garden by Mirei Shigemori; and the public footbath by the Kiso River.

The ryokan also connects closely with Nakasendo walking. Through the Kaido-Roman Meguri walking programs, you can explore the Kiso Road with guided routes, seasonal scenery, local food, and cultural experiences. These programs change by season and help you see more than the main tourist streets.

Kiso-Fukushima also works well as a base for Narai-juku, Tsumago-juku, Magome-juku, the Fukushima Checkpoint site, Kiso River walks, lacquerware shops, and forested sections of the old road. The town gives you Edo-period history, mountain culture, and slower walking travel in one place.
