Overview

Stay right in front of Kusatsu Onsen’s most iconic site, the Yubatake, at Hotel Ichii—a ryokan with more than 300 years of history. Since the Edo period, this long-established inn has welcomed travelers to the heart of Kusatsu with the scent of sulfur and the soft whisper of rising steam. You’ll feel the pulse of time as you take in the natural energy of one of Japan’s most famous hot springs. Locals affectionately call it “Ichii of the First Well,” honoring both its name and the ryokan’s dedication to being number one in hospitality.

Accommodation

Hotel Ichii has two wings: the Main Building and the Annex. The Main Building faces the Yubatake and features 23 exclusive rooms with direct views of the springs. From your room, you can watch the steam rise, hear the flow of water from the spring cascades, and enjoy the changing colors of the street lights and skies.

The highest floor now includes fully renovated executive rooms, offering upgraded interiors and enhanced comfort. You can also choose from traditional Japanese-style rooms, larger group rooms, or spacious two-room suites in the Annex. Some rooms overlook the surrounding hills and townscape, while others offer more quiet, private stays.

Dining

Enjoy two distinct dining experiences at Hotel Ichii. The buffet restaurant, Touun, offers a festive and abundant selection of Japanese, Western, and Chinese dishes. Watch the chefs prepare your meal in the live kitchen and celebrate your trip with signature items like hand-crafted meatloaf and steak grilled right in front of you.

For a quieter, more traditional experience, dine at Kimi no Roman, the ryokan’s formal Japanese restaurant. Here, you can enjoy a seasonal course meal served in a calm space designed with a Taisho-era romantic flair. Main dishes include grilled selections prepared in an open kitchen. You can also choose a more luxurious course, which includes both meat and fish. Children’s plates are available with familiar favorites like fried shrimp and hamburg steak.

Onsen and Wellness

Hotel Ichii gives you access to two rare natural hot spring sources. The indoor public bath, Sekiden, uses the White Flag Spring, famous for its slightly cloudy, sulfur-rich water. The open-air bath, Sekitei, draws from the Bandai Spring near Mt. Shirane, known for its crystal-clear, strongly acidic water.

These two springs offer completely different sensations. The indoor bath soothes with soft, milky water and a gentle touch, while the outdoor bath refreshes with sharp, invigorating clarity. Whether you want to relax indoors or soak under the stars, you’ll enjoy a deep connection to the natural power of Kusatsu Onsen.

Guests with Tattoos

If you have tattoos, you are free to use the baths. For a more private experience, consider using the open-air bath during off-peak hours or consult the front desk for quiet times.

Facilities

Hotel Ichii features a wide range of spaces for relaxation and convenience. Visit the souvenir center on the first floor, the largest in Kusatsu, offering everything from local treats and crafts to character merchandise and bath goods.

The lounge Sakura lets you unwind while overlooking the Yubatake. Enjoy free coffee or tea and plan your next outing. Wine and sake vending machines add a little extra indulgence. If you stay in an executive room, you’ll receive tokens to use the machines at no cost.

The public bath area includes updated powder rooms and spacious waiting lounges. After your soak, relax on a sofa or freshen up in comfort. You can also visit the massage and reflexology room to relieve any tension from your travels.

Activities

Step outside the front door and the Yubatake is right there. Walk among the steam and lights, visit nearby shops, or enjoy seasonal events. From spring greens to winter snow, the view changes constantly.

During your stay, take advantage of the ryokan’s location to explore Kusatsu’s hot spring culture. You’re never far from the sights, smells, and sounds of one of Japan’s most celebrated onsen towns.
