Overview

You stay at Meigetsuso in Kaminoyama Hayama Onsen, on a quiet high point in Yamagata with open views toward the Zao mountain range. The setting gives you space to slow down, look out across the mountains, and enjoy a stay shaped by nature, silence, and the changing seasons.

Meigetsuso feels more like a private village than a single inn. The official site describes all 20 rooms as detached-style, each with its own character, so you can enjoy a stronger sense of privacy during your stay.

Accommodation

Your room gives you the feeling of returning to a peaceful private home. Meigetsuso offers 20 rooms, with designs that blend Japanese calm with light Western touches. You can choose from Zao-view rooms, garden-view rooms, rooms with bedrooms, rooms with semi-open-air baths, rooms with open-air baths, and a spacious special room for larger stays.

Some rooms look toward the Zao mountains, while others face the garden. Several rooms include a private semi-open-air bath or open-air bath, so you can bathe at your own pace without leaving your room. Some room types also include a separate bedroom, giving you more comfort if you prefer beds instead of futons.

You can also stay in “Okura,” a twin-bed room set slightly away from the main building. It is designed for room-only stays and gives you an even more secluded feeling. Free Wi-Fi is available in rooms except Okura, according to the official site.

Dining

Your meals at Meigetsuso focus on true seasonal taste. Dinner follows the style of Japanese kaiseki, with dishes prepared to bring out aroma, texture, color, and balance. The ryokan places strong importance on the season, so each meal feels connected to the time of year.

You taste ingredients selected from Yamagata and nearby regions, including mountain vegetables, mushrooms, seafood, Yamagata beef, and rice from a region known for its rice culture. The chef personally selects ingredients, creating dishes that feel local, refined, and deeply tied to the land.

Breakfast continues the same gentle rhythm. You start the day with a meal that feels calm and nourishing, allowing you to move into the morning slowly rather than rushing.

Onsen and Wellness

The onsen is one of the main reasons to stay here. The large public baths use fragrant Aomori hiba wood for the ceiling, walls, and bath edges, with granite used for the tub and washing area. The official site lists the spring as a sodium-calcium chloride sulfur hot spring.

You can also enjoy a private open-air bath made from hollowed Zao rock. From the tub, you look out toward the Zao mountain range. You do not need a reservation for this private open-air bath; you can use it when it is free.

For a more private soak with family or companions, you can reserve the family bath for 45 minutes after check-in. Meigetsuso also added a private sauna with hot spring water beside Okura in winter 2023, with times and fees available by inquiry.

For deeper relaxation, you can book treatments at the body salon “natural hand.” The salon has three private rooms and offers body treatments, facials, foot care, and hand care. It operates by reservation from 14:00 to 22:00, with final reception at 18:00.

Guests with tattoos

If you have tattoos, Meigetsuso gives you good private bathing options. Several rooms include private baths, and the ryokan also offers a private open-air bath and a reservable family bath.

Facilities

The lounge gives you wide views of the Zao mountain range and the Ou mountains. On clear days, you can step out onto the terrace and enjoy the open air. The lobby also includes a PC for internet use.

The detached lounge feels warm and inviting, with a fireplace, reading space, chess, coffee, and tea. You can spend time here in the morning or evening when you want to be outside your room without leaving the ryokan.

The Okura Gallery sits inside a historic white-walled storehouse from the Taisho period. It displays works by Yamagata artists and designers, and some pieces are available for purchase. The gallery is generally open from 10:00 to 18:00, though closures may happen.

You can also spend time in the library, the post-bath salon, the shop, the wine cellar, and the body salon. These spaces help you enjoy the property slowly, without needing to fill your day with outside plans.

Activities

You can make your stay as quiet or active as you like. On the property, you can walk near the “Fairy Forest,” read, rest after breakfast, enjoy the baths, or book a body treatment. The ryokan also recommends early check-in at 14:00 and late check-out at 11:30 for a slower stay.

For activities nearby, you can try yoga from April to November, Kurort walking, Ajikan meditation at nearby Shoshinji Temple, fruit picking, winery visits, horseback riding, golf, paragliding, and winter activities in the Zao snow resort area. Lina World amusement park is also about 15 minutes away by car.

Access is simple from Tokyo. You take the Shinkansen to Kaminoyama Onsen Station in as little as 2 hours and 30 minutes, then reach Meigetsuso by taxi in about 5 to 6 minutes.
