Overview

Mozumo is a quiet hot spring ryokan in Hirayu Onsen, surrounded by the forests and mountains of Okuhida. With only 10 rooms, the atmosphere feels private and deeply connected to nature. The sound of the nearby stream, the movement of the trees, and the changing seasonal colours shape the rhythm of your stay.

The name Mozumo comes from the Mozumo River, which flows from Mount Norikura. An old story says the gods rested beside this water during their journeys to and from Izumo. Today, you come here for forest views, private open-air baths, Hida beef cuisine, and time away from everyday noise.

Accommodation

Mozumo offers two room styles: Shinra and Enju. Every room has a private open-air bath supplied with water from the ryokan’s own hot spring source. The baths are made from either Japanese cypress or Mikage granite, giving each room a slightly different atmosphere.

Shinra includes a 10-tatami living room and an 8-tatami bedroom. Meals are served in your room, allowing you to dine without leaving your private space.

Enju includes an 8-tatami living room and an 8-tatami bedroom. Meals are served in a private dining room, giving you a separate space for dinner and breakfast.

Your room also includes heating and cooling, a refrigerator, television, washbasin, washlet toilet, safe, tea set, down bedding, yukata, towels, and bath amenities. Large windows frame the surrounding forest, while the private open-air bath lets you enjoy the trees and mountain air at any time.

Dining

Dinner is seasonal Japanese kaiseki centred on A5-grade Hida beef. You enjoy carefully prepared courses that bring together local vegetables, mountain ingredients, fresh seafood, rice, and dishes that change throughout the year.

Different meal plans let you choose the cut and amount of Hida beef that best suits your stay. The ryokan also pays close attention to the supporting ingredients, including seafood sourced from different regions of Japan and dashi made with selected bonito flakes, dried sardines, and kombu.

Breakfast continues the local theme with warm Japanese dishes and regional flavours. Depending on your room type, you dine either in your room or in a private dining space, keeping every meal quiet and personal.

Onsen and Wellness

Mozumo uses its own hot spring source, Yama no Yu, located about 200 metres from the ryokan. The water flows directly into the baths without circulation or heating. It is a hydrogen carbonate spring rich in iron, so the water may sometimes appear cloudy or reddish brown.

Every room has a private open-air bath supplied with the same source-flowing water. You can soak whenever you like, surrounded by the scent of the forest and the changing mountain air.

There are also two shared open-air baths, one for men and one for women. They are generally available from 15:00 until 9:30 the following morning. During heavy snow, the shared baths may close for safety, but your in-room open-air bath remains the main place to enjoy the hot spring.

Guests with Tattoos

Mozumo has shared open-air baths, so tattoos are not permitted in these bathing areas. Every room has a private source-flowing open-air bath, allowing you to enjoy Yama no Yu in complete privacy.

Facilities

Mozumo has a Ryukyu-tatami lobby, forest-facing lounge, terrace, private dining rooms, shared open-air baths, and parking for 10 cars. The building is designed around large windows, quiet corridors, and close views of the private forest.

The ryokan does not have banquet or karaoke facilities, helping it maintain a calm atmosphere. Smoking is not permitted inside the property, and pets cannot stay. Mozumo accepts adults aged 20 and over, making the stay especially suited to couples and quiet adult retreats.

Activities

Mozumo places you close to some of the Northern Alps’ best-known natural areas. Kamikochi and Shinhotaka Ropeway are both about 30 minutes away by bus, while Norikura Skyline is about 60 minutes away.

Closer to Hirayu, you can visit Hirayu Great Falls, walk through the hot spring village, or explore the surrounding forests. In winter, deep snow changes the landscape completely, while spring, summer, and autumn bring mountain flowers, fresh greenery, and colourful leaves.

Additional Features

Mozumo gives you a 10-room adults-only setting, private open-air hot spring baths in every room, source-flowing Yama no Yu water, shared forest baths, A5 Hida beef kaiseki, private dining, Wi-Fi, parking, and pickup from Hirayu Onsen Bus Terminal with advance reservation.

Check-in is from 15:00, with dinner beginning between 18:00 and 18:30. Check-out is by 10:00. Hirayu Onsen Bus Terminal is about eight minutes away on foot, and advance pickup can be arranged.
