Overview
Stay directly in front of Nikko’s UNESCO World Heritage shrines and temples at Nikko Nishimachi Club – Aratoto. With only nine suites, this intimate hot spring hotel gives you a quiet place to experience the history, craftsmanship, and natural beauty of central Nikko.
More than 360 years of history surround the cedar trees outside your window. Inside, local Oya stone and Tochigi cedar meet custom European lighting and furniture, creating a distinctive setting that feels connected to Nikko without losing its sense of elegance.
You can walk to Nikko Toshogu Shrine, Nikko Futarasan Shrine, and Rinnoji Temple, then return for a private natural hot spring bath and a French dinner shaped by seasonal ingredients from Nikko and Tochigi.
Accommodation
All nine rooms are 50-square-metre suites divided between the Main Building and Annex. Every suite includes two Simmons beds arranged in a Hollywood twin layout, with the beds placed side by side. Oya stone, cedar panels, carefully selected lighting, and European furniture bring warmth and character to each space.
The Annex stands across the courtyard from the Main Building and contains three single-storey suites with high ceilings and private gardens. Two suites have a Western layout, while one combines Western beds with a Japanese-style area. Each Annex suite includes a semi-open-air bath where you can look toward the garden or open the window to the night sky. These in-room baths use regular water rather than natural hot spring water.
The Main Building has three suites on the third floor and three on the top floor. Large windows look toward the historic cedar trees, while the top-floor suites add higher ceilings and a greater sense of space. Each suite includes a Western-style bathroom with a window that you can open toward the surrounding greenery. The in-room bathrooms do not use hot spring water, but you can reserve one of the two private natural hot spring baths in the Main Building.
Your suite includes free wireless internet, air conditioning, a television, refrigerator, safe, minibar, coffee maker, kettle, tea set, washlet toilet, hairdryer, towel warmer, and a DVD and Blu-ray player. You also receive pajamas, a bathrobe, slippers, towels, skincare products, and Omnisens shampoo, conditioner, and body wash.
Dining
Dinner brings together French techniques and seasonal produce from Nikko and Tochigi. The full course highlights ingredients such as Tochigi Wagyu, Nikko yuba, regional vegetables, seafood, and locally grown strawberries. The menu changes with the seasons, allowing each dish to reflect the ingredients available during your stay.
A sommelier can help you select wine to accompany your meal, while original cocktails give you another way to enjoy the evening. Dinner is served in the Main Building restaurant, where Tochigi cedar covers the walls and ceiling. You can arrive between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM.
Breakfast begins with your choice of omelette, scrambled eggs, or sunny-side-up eggs. You can pair your eggs with sausage or bacon, followed by bread, locally grown warm vegetables, salad, fruit, yoghurt, coffee, tea, and soft drinks. Breakfast is served between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM. On clear mornings, you may also dine on the café terrace while looking toward the cedar trees.
Dessert is prepared by the pastry chef using seasonal fruit. Five kinds of strawberries grow in the property’s own garden, and the ripest fruit available that day may appear in your dessert. Other seasonal fruit is used when strawberries are not at their best.
Onsen and Wellness
Two private natural hot spring baths are located on the accommodation floors of the Main Building. Ichi-no-Yu is on the third floor, while Ni-no-Yu is on the top floor. Both are reserved for private use, so you can enjoy the water without sharing the bathing space.
Nikko Onsen water is clear and colourless. Bathing in it is associated with relief from fatigue and muscle pain, while the mineral water is also valued for leaving the skin feeling smooth.
Each private bathing area includes a bath, changing room, washbasin, toiletries, drinking water, and cups. Bathing hours run from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM and from 6:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
You reserve your bathing time when you check in. Advance bath reservations are not accepted. You can use either private bath whether you stay in the Main Building or Annex.
Guests with Tattoos
You can use the private natural hot spring baths if you have tattoos. There are no shared public baths, and your reserved bathing time gives you complete privacy.
Facilities
The circular Main Building includes a cedar-lined restaurant, café terrace, bar, and two private natural hot spring baths. The café terrace faces the historic cedar trees and provides an outdoor setting for breakfast when the weather is suitable. The bar gives you a comfortable place to enjoy wine, original cocktails, and other drinks after dinner.
Between the Main Building and Annex, Tea Room Ratao combines Japanese craftsmanship with carefully chosen contemporary details. Delicate kumiko woodwork decorates the sliding screens, which open toward a courtyard with cherry blossoms in spring and colourful leaves in autumn. You can reserve the tea room for a tea gathering, celebration, or special occasion.
Free wireless internet is available in your suite. All rooms are non-smoking, with a designated smoking space beside the first-floor elevator.
Activities
Walk from the hotel to the UNESCO World Heritage complex formed by Nikko Toshogu Shrine, Nikko Futarasan Shrine, and Rinnoji Temple. Together, these sacred sites contain more than one hundred religious buildings and structures set among old-growth forest.
You can admire the detailed carvings and decoration of Nikko Toshogu, explore the long spiritual history of Futarasan Shrine, and visit the halls, gardens, and mausoleums connected to Rinnoji Temple. Shinkyo Bridge also stands near the entrance to the sacred mountain area, giving you another important Nikko landmark to discover on foot.
Central Nikko also offers traditional food, crafts, museums, and quiet walking routes. You can spend the day exploring without relying on a car, then return for dinner and a reserved hot spring bath.
Additional Features
You can stay with children of junior-high-school age or older. Children of elementary-school age and younger are not accepted unless the entire property is reserved for private use.
The restaurant asks you to avoid sandals, hotel slippers, pajamas, bathrobes, tracksuits, and shorts during meals. This helps maintain the atmosphere of the dining room.
Your private hot spring time must be selected at check-in, while Tea Room Ratao requires an advance reservation. All suites include pajamas, bathrobes, premium bath products, skincare items, coffee-making facilities, and complimentary wireless internet.
