Overview

Onyado Hisui is a traditional ryokan in Fukuchi Onsen, deep in Okuhida Onsenkyo, Takayama. Here, you arrive to soft torch and lantern light, warm wood, an irori hearth, and the quiet mood of a mountain hot spring village. The ryokan is known for its open-air baths, Hida beef cuisine, and a stay that feels close to old Okuhida life.

Fukuchi Onsen also carries the legend of “Tennosen,” the Emperor’s Spring, connected with Emperor Murakami’s visit for hot-spring healing during the Heian period. Around you, Okuhida’s mountain seasons shape the stay: fresh green leaves, autumn color, snow, and clear night air above the baths.

Accommodation

Stay in a traditional Japanese-style room with tatami flooring, warm wood details, and a quiet mountain-inn atmosphere. Your room gives you a simple, restful place to slow down after bathing, dining, and exploring Fukuchi Onsen.

Rooms include a washbasin and private toilet. Some rooms also include an in-room bath, but this bath is not a hot spring bath. For the true onsen experience, you will use the ryokan’s shared hot spring baths and onsen bathing areas.

Dining

Meals focus on Okuhida country-style cooking made with seasonal local ingredients. Dinner brings you mountain vegetables, local seasonal produce, river fish, and Hida beef as the main highlight. You can choose Hida beef as either hoba steak or shabu-shabu, depending on the plan.

Dinner and breakfast are served in private dining spaces, so you can enjoy your meal at an easy pace without feeling rushed. The style feels warm, local, and deeply connected to the mountains around Fukuchi Onsen.

Onsen and Wellness

All baths at Onyado Hisui use free-flowing hot spring water directly from the source, and the baths are free for overnight stays. The spring quality is listed as simple hot spring water.

You can enjoy several bathing spaces within the ryokan, including the men’s open-air bath Yakemi no Yu, the women’s open-air bath Tsukimi no Yu, the mixed open-air bath Isurugi no Yu, the private open-air bath with a reclining bath Yawaragi no Yu, and the detached private bathhouses Tochi Yu and Katsura Yu.

The open-air baths glow with soft lantern light. In spring and summer, you look out toward fresh greenery; in autumn, the mountains turn red and gold; in winter, you soak while snow gathers around the bath.

Guests with Tattoos

Private onsen bathing options are available at the ryokan, including private open-air baths and detached private baths. If you have tattoos, these private baths may be the most comfortable way to enjoy the hot spring water.

For the public bath, check with the hotel directly before using the shared bathing areas.

Facilities

Inside Onyado Hisui, you can spend time in warm, traditional spaces that match the atmosphere of Fukuchi Onsen. The lobby and irori hearth area give you a quiet place to relax before or after your bath, while the café and lounge area offer another comfortable spot to pause during your stay.

Meals are served in private dining spaces, giving you more privacy at dinner and breakfast. The bathing facilities include men’s and women’s open-air baths, a mixed open-air bath, a private open-air bath, and detached private bathhouses. You will also find a vending machine and free parking on site.

Please note that a current booking notice says the private baths are closed because of a hot spring source issue, so check directly before booking if private bathing is important for your stay.

Activities

Step outside Onyado Hisui and you can explore Fukuchi Onsen at an easy village pace. A lovely first stop is Mukashibanashi no Sato, a public space in the heart of Fukuchi Onsen where you can walk from local inns and enjoy the old mountain-village atmosphere. Inside the area, you will find the Fukuchi Onsen Morning Market, the Fukuchi Fossil Museum, Okuhida Manyokan, and other small local points of interest.

Start your morning at the Fukuchi Onsen Morning Market, where local vegetables, fruit, mountain produce, folk crafts, and Okuhida souvenirs are sold. In spring you may find wild mountain vegetables, in summer fresh tomatoes and cucumbers, and in autumn mushrooms from the region.

The seasons also bring simple outdoor pleasures. In spring, you can walk near cherry blossoms; in autumn, you can enjoy the changing leaves; and in winter, you can experience the snow-covered scenery around Fukuchi Onsen. In summer, the area hosts the traditional Henbetori lion dance as part of the Fukuchi Onsen summer festival.
